Updated: Changes To UK-US 24Hr Time Limit On Unrestricted Fares
January 30, 2007

The 24-hour ticketing time limit for all unrestricted fares has been removed.

The -TK fares will still be loaded into fare databases (without the timelimit restriction) so that any customers holding an unticketed reservation under those fare basis codes will still be able to price and complete their reservation without losing the space.

Collection of UK Government Air Passenger Duty
January 29, 2007

Following the UK Government's decision to double the Air Passenger Duty paid by passengers traveling from the United Kingdom, AA customers who have purchased tickets to travel on or after February 1, 2007 will be required to pay the increased tax before flying.

Customers who have purchased tickets prior to December 12, 2006 will need to pay the extra tax, which will be collected at the airport when checking in for their flight departing from the UK. Payment can be made by credit card or cash.

AA greatly regrets the inconvenience that this retroactive tax will cause to customers who had already paid for their tickets before this government-mandated tax increase.

Surcharge Changes for International Markets
January 10, 2007

Effective January 10, 2007, American Airlines will change the way passenger surcharges are collected for all international markets, except Mexico and Caribbean. Currently, these surcharges are included as Q amounts and are incorporated into the base fare amount. With the change, the surcharges will be collected as YQ amounts and will be shown as a Tax/Fee/Charge line item on each ticket. The sum identified as YQ in the Fare Calculation line is not a tax. It is the amount of the surcharge collected by the airline to compensate for increased costs, primarily fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is AA changing the way passenger surcharges are collected?
AA is making this change to remain competitive, as a number of carriers already use YQ to collect these surcharges.

Where will passenger surcharges appear on the ticket?
In many instances today, passenger surcharges appear as Q amounts in the fare calculation line. Under the new method, these surcharges will be shown as a Tax/Fee/Charge line item on a ticket. The sum identified as YQ will reflect the collective YQ amounts for all segments with applicable surcharges. The sum identified as YQ is not a tax. It is the amount of the surcharge collected by the airline to compensate for increased costs, primarily fuel.

Will the conversion from Q to YQ impact published fare levels?
No. Published fares displayed in GDS fare quotes are unaffected by this change.

American Airlines NRT Terminal 2 Move
January 4, 2007

On January 17, 2007, AA will relocate to Terminal 2 at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, a move that will improve efficiency, alleviate congestion, and enhance the customer experience on trips to Asia.

The main advantages of our move are the following:
  • Seamless, same terminal interline connectivity and improved Minimum Connect Times (MCT):  With AA departures and arrivals located in Terminal 2, connections become seamless between other oneworld carriers that also operate in Terminal 2, including Cathay Pacific (starting January 21), Qantas, and in Spring 2007, JAL. In addition, the minimum connect time will reduce to an average of 70 minutes versus the current 110.
  • Faster and convenient airport experience:  Depending on conditions at Immigration, the time after check-in to the departure gates can take just minutes during off-peak hours.
  • Increase in number of jetbridge gates:  Currently 25% of AA flights require customers to be bussed to the aircraft due to shortage of jetbridge gates in Terminal 1. With the Terminal 2 relocation, nearly 100% of AA flights will arrive at a jetbridge gate.
  • Admirals Club:  The new Admirals Club is spacious, conveniently located just steps away from Immigration, and offers state-of-the-art amenities, enabling customers to work or relax in comfort prior to departure. Along the way, passengers will find a wide range of Duty Free shops currently under expansion called "Fifth Avenue" beginning in April, 2007.
