Latest oneworld news, announcements and updates
27 November, 2006: Malév invited to join the oneworld alliance
BUDAPEST, Hungary - Malév is set to join oneworld, the
world's leading quality airline alliance, after
formally accepting an invitation to join the grouping at a
ceremony in Budapest conducted in the presence of Hungary's Minister of Finance,
János Veres, and Minister of Economy and Transport, János Kóka.
The formal invitation follows a memorandum of understanding
reached between oneworld and Malév in May of this year.
Since then, the Hungarian airline
has satisfied audits by the alliance of its quality and safety standards,
as well as a review to ensure it can deliver oneworld's full range
of customer services and benefits.
"We want Hungary to play a central regional
role in both the air passenger and cargo markets," said Mr. Veres.
"Malév's experience and accession to oneworld, and the promising
privatization of Budapest Airport, support this objective."
Mr. Kóka added: "Budapest and its Ferihegy Airport can grow by providing good
facilities. Malév joining the oneworld alliance provides
further outstanding growth opportunities.
The recruitment of our national airline to the alliance will result in
even better links with the international aviation market. Malév's stronger
position will improve Budapest's regional role,
and not just the airline's competitive situation, but also that of the country."
The formal invitation to join the alliance was
subject to a number of conditions, including
satisfactory progress in its turnaround plan toward profitability.
The airline must also conclude bilateral agreements with interested existing partners.
Work will now begin on connecting its information technology systems
to those of its new partners, bringing key internal processes into
line with oneworld requirements,
training its employees to deliver oneworld products, customer
benefits and support, and completing the other tasks needed before it can become
a fully-fledged member of the alliance.
Finnair will act as Malév's sponsor into oneworld, working with it on these activities.
Until the joining process is completed, expected within the next
15 months, it is business and service as usual for both Malév and oneworld.
oneworld Managing Partner John
McCulloch and Finnair Chief Operating Officer
Henrik Arle were recently in Budapest,
representing all the existing members of oneworld,
to sign the agreement with Malév Chairman Péter Hónig and Chief Executive Já
nos Gónci.
"Joining oneworld is a crucial element of Malév's turnaround plan,"
said Mr. Hónig. "No medium-sized airline can achieve
sustainable earnings without partners. We are very proud to have been invited
to fly alongside some of the biggest and best airlines in the world." Mr. Gönci said:
"Being part of oneworld will broaden
our network immensely and further improve the services and benefits we can
offer our customers. We also believe we can contribute significantly
in value to oneworld through the addition of our
strong central and southeast European network." Added oneworld Managing
Partner John McCulloch: "Central and Eastern Europe is a region
where oneworld would like to broaden its presence -
which Malév will do well for us. It has an attractive network
in this part of the world and an excellent hub in Budapest. Like oneworld's
existing members, it has a reputation for high quality customer service. Its admirable
management team has set course to restore the airline to profitability the year after next."
Malév is one of three airlines currently lining up to join oneworld.
Royal Jordanian was voted on board as a member-elect last month,
and will start offering the alliance's services and benefits from around the
turn of 2006/2007. Also last month, Japan Airlines,
the third largest airline in the world in terms of revenue
, announced it had decided to seek membership.
Malév would expand oneworld's existing network by
11 destinations - Bourgas, Constanca, FlyBalaton (Sármellék), Ljubjana,
Odessa, Podgorica, Sarajevo, Skopje, Timisoara, Tirgu-Mures and Zagreb -
and three territories (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Slovenia). oneworld's
existing members currently serve 134 countries and 602 destinations.
With JAL, Royal Jordanian and Malév, the oneworld network
would extend to 689 destinations in 141 countries and territories.
Three existing oneworld partners currently serve
Malév's Budapest base - Aer Lingus, British Airways and Finnair. Malév operates
to established oneworld hubs New York Kennedy, Helsinki,
London Heathrow, Madrid, Dublin, Cork and Bangkok.
Malév already has a codesharing agreement
with oneworld partner Finnair. It is currently
discussing additional bilateral cooperation with various other members of the alliance.
26 October, 2005: oneworld Welcomes Japan Airlines' Interest In Joining The Alliance
oneworld, the world's leading quality global
airline alliance, said today that it warmly welcomes today's
announcement by Japan Airlines (JAL) that it intends to seek
membership in the alliance.
JAL is the largest carrier in the Asia-Pacific region. By virtually
all measures, it would join American Airlines and British Airways
as the largest members of the alliance. In terms of group revenues,
it would become the largest member of oneworld.
Until today, Japan Airlines was the only one among the 20 biggest
international airlines in the world (IATA members) not to have
joined or sought membership in one of the three key airline
groupings.
American Airlines will be JAL's primary oneworld sponsor,
supporting JAL through the various tasks to be completed before it
can join the alliance. Cathay Pacific will assist American in that
role.
"Japan Airlines' interest in joining oneworld is a very significant
development. Asia is a robust market for air travel and the addition
of JAL means that oneworld customers will enjoy even more convenient
access to and from that important area of the world," said American's
Chairman and CEO, Gerard Arpey, who also noted that American has long
had a strong bilateral relationship with JAL. "Along with a broader
route network, oneworld customers will also have more services and
benefits available to them than ever before. We are excited to
sponsor their membership in the alliance, and look forward to
deepening our association with them through oneworld."
Today's announcement follows announcements that Royal Jordanian
Airlines and Hungary's Malév Airlines also plan to join oneworld.
JAL would expand oneworld's existing network by approximately 10
percent, adding 68 new destinations - 56 of them in Japan and five
in China. It would also add one territory - Guam. oneworld's existing
members currently serve 134 countries and 599 destinations. With JAL,
Royal Jordanian and Malév, the oneworld network would extend to 686
destinations in 140 countries and territories.
In addition to its relationship with American, JAL currently has
extensive bilateral agreements with oneworld partners British
Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, LAN and Qantas.
Five of oneworld's existing partners operate to and from Japan -
American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and
Qantas - carrying some four million passengers last year on a
combined schedule of almost 200 round trips a week. These link
Tokyo Narita, Osaka Kansai, Nagoya Centrair, Fukuoka and Sapporo
Chitose with direct flights to 13 destinations, including oneworld
hubs at Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York JFK,
London Heathrow, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Sydney.
Japan Airlines serves oneworld hubs Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles,
New York JFK, London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney.
18 October, 2005: Royal Jordanian to Join oneworld Airline Alliance
Royal Jordanian Airlines is to join oneworldSM, the
leading quality global airline alliance, it was announced today. It is the first airline from the
Levant, Middle East and Gulf region to be elected to any of the global airline groupings and the
first airline accepted to join oneworld in more than five years.
Royal Jordanian has already satisfied oneworld's key pre-joining audits, assuring
the grouping that it can deliver the alliance's services, benefits and processes and also match its
quality and safety standards. Royal Jordanian should start offering oneworld
services and benefits as a full-fledged member around the turn of 2006-07.
Gerard Arpey, Chairman and CEO of American Airlines, welcomed Royal Jordanian to the
oneworld alliance. "We are very excited that Royal Jordanian will be part
of oneworld," said Arpey. "The airline brings much to the alliance that will
benefit other members of the group, but more importantly, will also benefit our customers. With
Royal Jordanian added to the oneworld roster of airlines, travel to and from the
Middle East and Gulf Regions will be more convenient - and rewarding - than ever before. We
welcome and eagerly anticipate their membership in the alliance."
Royal Jordanian will add two countries to the oneworld map (Iraq and Yemen) and
10 destinations - Al Arish (Egypt); Al Ain (UAE); Aden and Sanaa (Yemen); Dammam and Jeddah
(Saudi Arabia); Aqaba (Jordan); and Baghdad, Basra and Irbil (Iraq). This will extend the
alliance's network to 135 territories and 611 destinations.
About oneworld
oneworld brings together some of the best and biggest names in the airline
business - American Airlines, British Airways, Qantas, Iberia, Cathay Pacific, LAN, Finnair
and Aer Lingus, plus their 12 affiliates. Hungary's Malév signed a memorandum of understanding
in May 2005 as its first step toward joining the alliance. oneworld enables its
members to offer their customers more services and benefits than any airline can provide on
its own. These include a broader route network, opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer
miles and points across the whole alliance network, and access to more airport lounges.
oneworld has won more top international awards for airline alliances than both its
competitors combined - voted the World's Best Airline Alliance for the second year running by
readers of Business Traveller magazine in its 2005 poll, and named the World's Leading Airline
Alliance for the second year running in the 2004 World Travel Awards, based on votes cast by travel
professionals from 80,000 agencies in more than 200 countries.
About Royal Jordanian
Royal Jordanian serves 51 destinations in 33 countries, including 27 points in the Levant,
Middle East, Gulf and North Africa, along with points in Asia, Europe and North America. With the
IATA two-letter code of "RJ," the airline operates more than 50 international departures a day.
Its Amman base is ideally suited as a regional hub for the Levant, Gulf and Middle East region.
