Effective February 16, 2015, if you call to book award travel that can be booked on aa.com, there will be a fee of $30 for flights within the U.S. and $40 for international flights. The fee is waived for award reservations that cannot be booked on aa.com.

Upgrades

Mileage upgrade awards on American Airlines

Use your miles to upgrade to the next cabin on most domestic and international flights. Request your upgrade award by calling American Airlines Reservations.

If your upgrade is not confirmed by the time you check in, you’ll be automatically added to the airport upgrade standby list using your original upgrade request date and time stamp.

500-mile upgrades on American Airlines

If you are an AAdvantage elite-status member, you can use your miles to buy 500-mile upgrades.

Upgrade on British Airways and Iberia

Use your miles to upgrade yourself or anyone else you designate on British Airways and Iberia flights.

    AAdvantage flight awards are subject to, and the passenger is responsible for, the September 11th Security Fee, applicable departure taxes, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges, and any other taxes and fees imposed by a government entity (U.S. or foreign), as well as any fees or surcharges imposed by the carrier.
