777 Aircraft First Class Cabin Configuration

American Airlines operates two different First Class cabin layouts aboard our 777 Flagship fleet - the 16-seat Flagship Suite and the larger 18-seat configuration with lie-flat seats. In either layout, our customers can expect superior First Class service while on board. And both products deliver the ample room and comfort our customers expect for working, relaxing or sleeping.

As we continue to simplify our operations, we have been scheduling both aircraft configurations in all markets, which means that our customers may encounter either configuration as part of the outstanding First Class International Flagship Service offered by American Airlines. As a result, our customers may have had last minute seat assignment changes that we recognize can be disconcerting to the traveler.

More importantly, we understand that many of our customers prefer the industry-first swivel seats that are featured as part of our Flagship Suite First Class product. That makes our recent announcement of the planned conversion to an all-Flagship-Suite product on our entire 777 fleet even more exciting.

In the meantime, we are taking steps to ensure that our customers will be more comfortable by adjusting our seat maps to accurately reflect the specific First Class cabin they'll encounter aboard their flight. For flights that operate on/after November 1, 2005, the seat maps for 777 flights now show the configuration for either the Flagship Suite (1-2-1 across) or the lie-flat international First Class seat (2-2-2 across) of the aircraft we intend to operate on that flight.

Here is some suggested language for your reservations representatives to use when working with a First Class reservation on a 777 aircraft:

Flights operating before November 1, 2005:

Be advised that the aircraft assigned to your flight may be equipped with either American's Flagship Suite or Lie-Flat seat. In both cases, you can expect American's superior First Class service while on board. Flights operating on/after November 1, 2005:
1-2-1 configuration - Flagship Suite

Be advised that the aircraft assigned to your flight is equipped with the Flagship Suite. You can expect American's superior First Class service while on board.

Flights on/after November 1, 2005 - 2-2-2 configuration - Lie-Flat seat

Be advised that the aircraft assigned to your flight is equipped with the Lie-Flat seat. You can expect American's superior First Class service while on board."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the key difference between the Flagship Suite and the Lie-Flat seat?
A: The Flagship Suite is arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration and facilitates face-to-face meetings with seats that swivel. The Lie-Flat seats are arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration that allows for travel side-by-side with a companion.

Q: Is there a difference in price between the Flagship Suite and the Lie-Flat seat?
A: We charge the same fare for both First Class seating types and in both cases, customers can expect our superior First Class service while on board.

Q: On a previous trip, there was no guarantee the customer would have the Flagship Suite product.
A: Previously, we scheduled our 777 aircraft as a single fleet in all of the international markets we serve. That meant that a flight was assigned either the Flagship Suite or the lie-flat configuration on the day of departure.
For flights operating on/after November 1, 2005, we will schedule the 777 as two distinct aircraft types. Although we will be able to advise customers of the planned equipment in advance, this is not a guarantee as operational changes may occur on the day of departure.
