Therapeutic Oxygen
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations do not allow passengers to bring or use their personal oxygen units on board a commercial aircraft. American Airlines (AA) supplies gaseous oxygen that is an FAA approved therapeutic unit for our passengers' use in flight only. Oxygen is available for use in all classes of cabin on AA jet service. Therapeutic oxygen is not offered on any of the American Eagle fleet including regional jets. In addition, oxygen is not offered on AmericanConnection flights operated by Chautauqua, and Corporate.

Oxygen Flow Rate
American Airlines offers oxygen at a varied flow rate of 0.5 - 6 liters per minute for both domestic and international flights.

Medical Certificate
A medical certificate may be required for customers who normally use oxygen whether they travel with or without oxygen during flight. If a therapeutic oxygen user states they do not wish to travel with or purchase oxygen, for safety reasons, we will need a doctor's note stating the customer can travel without therapeutic oxygen. In addition, we will require a doctor's statement for oxygen users in-flight authorizing the flow rate. Please document and queue all PNRs with oxygen requests including any customer inquiries regarding oxygen to Special Assistance Coordinators at DFW105/11 or contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance.

Oxygen Request On Availability
All oxygen requests are based upon availability. Adding the SSR code (OXYG) for oxygen in the PNR does not mean that oxygen has been confirmed. It means you have ordered oxygen for the customer based on their request. It is very important that you queue all oxygen orders to SAC for follow-up. SAC will check oxygen availability and notify whether or not the oxygen order will be fulfilled. AA requires a minimum of 48 hours advance notice to process orders, however, more notification is appreciated. If less than 48 hours notice is given, please request an alternate date to allow for processing time.

Oxygen Fee
On March 1, 2004, AA reduced the oxygen fee from $154 CAD to $136 CAD per flight coupon for travel between the United States and Canada. The $100 USD oxygen fee per flight coupon remains the same for domestic and international markets, which may be paid one way or round trip. Place all PNRs for oxygen orders on queue DFW105/11 for SAC follow-up or contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance.

Oxygen Cancellations
All itinerary changes to PNRs with oxygen request or cancellations must be queued to DFW105/11 for SAC follow-up or contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance.

No Ground Oxygen Provided In Terminals
Oxygen is provided only onboard the aircraft. AA does not provide oxygen in the terminal areas. Customers must contact a local oxygen supplier and arrange to have oxygen units delivered to the airport. Advise customers to prepare for enough units to cover unanticipated delays due to weather or other off-schedule operational situations.

Assigning Seats To Oxygen Passengers
Aisle seat assignments are preferred. Bulkhead or exit row seats are not permitted.

Refunds
Effective September 4, 2002, for new bookings, therapeutic oxygen is non-refundable.

Oxygen Usage Per Flight
There is no limit on the number of oxygen units to be used by passengers or scheduled during flight.

Empty Oxygen Units
Only empty gaseous oxygen units (usually made of green metal) may be accepted as checked baggage or in the cabin provided the customer can demonstrate the bottle is empty and meets carry-on or baggage requirements. Also, only gaseous oxygen is approved for cargo acceptance.

Liquid Oxygen Units Not Accepted
Liquid oxygen units (usually made of white plastic) are totally forbidden on AA aircraft whether empty or full. It is considered a dangerous goods article which is not returned to customers.

Shipping Full Oxygen Units
Neither American Airlines nor Air Cargo accepts full oxygen tanks from passengers. U.S. carriers can only accept them when packaged and labeled properly by known shippers with required shipping papers. Passengers may be referred to an indirect air carrier such as Federal Express, Airborne Express, etc. Only gaseous oxygen is approved for cargo acceptance. Liquid oxygen is forbidden on AA aircraft.
