Child Restraint Devices
  • Maximum weight of child: 40 pounds
  • Maximum size of child: none
  • Applicable child fare must be paid to guarantee a seat for use of a child restraint device.
  • If seat adjacent to adult is available at airport check-in, it may be used at no charge for restraint device.
  • If no seat is available, seat will be gate checked at no charge and not counted toward free bag allowance.
  • Restraint seats are considered part of free personal items for ticketed infants / children only.
  • Restraint seats may be checked or carried on (if space permits) in addition to the normal baggage allotment.
  • If carried on, item must be secured to the seat, as no other storage is available.
  • Child / infant may remain in restraint seat for takeoff/landing or be held by adult.
  • Booster seats and belly belts are prohibited.

U.S. Manufactured Restraints
Most restraints used in automobiles are acceptable, if they have the following label: "This restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety conditions."
Additionally, they may have a second label (in red lettering): "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft."

Foreign Manufactured Restraints
Accepted, provided they bear either a label showing approval of a non-U.S. Government or a label showing seat manufactured under standards of the United Nations.

Baby B'Air Product
The Baby B'Air product is acceptable for use in flight only. This is clearly stated on the box. It must not be used during taxi, take-off, landing, or anytime the seat belt sign is on during flight.

Seating Restrictions For Child Restraint Devices
May be seated in any window seat of any aircraft except for the following:
  • designated exit rows
  • in the row in front or behind the exit rows
May also be seated in any of the following:
  • any non-aisle Coach Class seat of the center section of a wide-body aircraft
  • any seat in the center section of First Class on wide body aircraft
  • any seat in the center section of Business Class

Adult Traveling With Two Children / Two Child Restraints
On single aisle aircraft, when an adult is traveling with two children / two child restraints, the adult must be seated on the aisle. On two-aisle aircraft, restraints should be placed together in center section, adult seated on either side of children.

Prohibited Restraint Devices
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recommended to United States carriers that booster seats and certain other restraints are prohibited from use in the cabin. Although these restraints contain the appropriate labels mentioned, FAA testing has shown these restraints do not provide sufficient occupant protection in airline cabins. Airline seats have a break-over design feature unlike automobiles. The break-over seat back can crush the child's abdomen between the seatback and the booster seat structure. For this reason, boosters are prohibited. Other prohibited restraints include child restraint safety belt extensions (belly belts) that attach to the parent or the parent's restraint, vest and / or harness type restraints, or any other child restraint device that positions the child on the lap or chest of an adult.

Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines/Service Fees

Unaccompanied minor service is required for UMNRS between the ages of 8 - 14. One connection fee applies regardless to the number of connections. Optional service for young adults 15 - 17 years old is available. If service is requested, all UMNR requirements apply. When two or more unaccompanied minors are booked/ticketed and/or traveling together, a single charge is collected for each one way trip from origin to destination. The UMNR charge applies per one-way trip.

American Airlines will provide an authorized escort for the child at all times. The child will be pre-boarded on flights and introduced to the flight attendants. On arrival, the child will be accompanied by American Airlines personnel to the meeting party, including through customs if applicable. American Airlines will not escort to bus or taxi services, only to specified adult on UMNR form.

Proof of age may be requested from passengers who advise they are 15 years old traveling alone (ID - any type of ID that reflects the customer's date of birth.) This is to ensure we are providing unaccompanied services to all children under 15 years old. For fare purposes, a 12 year old qualifies as an adult.

Restrictions for Unaccompanied Minors
  • May not travel on the last flight out of the final connection city, unless it is the only flight of the day.
  • A child 5 - 7 years old may not be booked on change of gauge or connections, even if child will be met at connecting points by an adult.
  • A child 8 - 14 years old may not be booked on co-terminal (SFO / OAK / SJC) connecting itineraries.
  • May not use ground transportation unescorted on overnight connection flights.
  • UMNRS may not be accepted on an originating flight if there is a reasonable likelihood the child will not make the flight connection due to a schedule irregularity.
  • Standby is highly discouraged on any type of flight (nonstop / connecting / through) for UMNRS. Final decision is up to airport discretion.
  • Additional restrictions apply to American Eagle flights operated without flight attendants.
  • Seat assignment should be window seat, preferably in the rear, except on American Eagle Saab 340B (SF3) aircraft--seat in front.
  • Effective for reservations made on or after June 2, 2007, American Airlines, American Eagle and American Connection will no longer accept UMNRs when their itinerary includes a connection to or from another airline.

Service Fees

Simplified Unaccompanied Minor Service Charge

Effective for reservations made, and tickets purchased on or after May 21, 2008, the Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) Service Charge for all domestic and international, non-stop, through or connection travel will be USD 100.00/CAD 100.00 each way. For customers who made reservations and purchased their tickets prior to May 21, 2008 and request UMNR service on/after May 21, we will honor the fee of $75.00USD/CAD.

Payment of UMNR fees are collected upon check-in from each carrier at board point one-way, from origination city to stopover and / or destination city on the date of departure. The fee is collected on outbound and return flights only by each individual carrier. Other airlines may have a different UMNR service fee and age acceptance policy. Contact the other airline to obtain their UMNR fee and age acceptance to complete their itinerary. Failure to do so may result in the child being unable to complete the trip without interruption. UMNR fees are not collected at connecting cities when the child connects to another carrier because the fee has already been collected at board point from origin to destination of the one-way trip.
    Domestic
Applicable for travel within the 50 United States, between the United States and Canada, or between the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).
    • $100 USD/$100 CAD for nonstop / through or same plane flights
    • $100 USD/$100 CAD for domestic connections - one fee collected regardless of number of connections

    International
Applicable for travel between the 50 United States or Canada and international points in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America, Transpacific, and Transatlantic markets. Effective March 1, 2007, the UMNR fees for international travel are as follows:
    • $100 USD/$100 CAD applies to ages 5 - 14 years on nonstop/direct/through flights only
    • $100 USD/$100 CAD applies to ages 8 - 14 years on connecting/online or interline flights
Fees apply per UMNR unless two or more are booked/ticketed and traveling together--then one charge is collected. UMNR service fee is required for children ages 5 - 14 years traveling alone. This fee is not optional. UMNR service fee is collected each way from originating board point to stopover or destination. (A stopover is a deliberate interruption of a journey at an intermediate point from which the passenger is not scheduled to depart within four hours of arrival.) If fee is not used, it is refundable to original form of payment. Service fee is based on country of payment.

Assisting UMNRs With Connections
An American Airlines authorized representative escorts the UMNR to the connecting gate. At the gate, either the gate agent or Flight Attendant Number One accepts custody of the child and signs the UMNR paperwork. The child is not left alone at the gate under any circumstances. If neither the gate agent nor Flight Attendant Number One is available to accept the custody, the child remains with the escort until another authorized person is available.

Advice For Parent Or Guardian
For domestic flights, the escort and child, should arrive at the ticket counter together two hours before departure in order to complete all necessary forms and check in . The child must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult until the UMNR has boarded the flight and the aircraft has departed the gate. For international flights, please plan to arrive three hours before departure.

The person dropping off the child must provide the ticket counter agent with their own name/address/telephone contact and the name/address/telephone contact of the downline person receiving the UMNR. The person meeting a UMNR must present picture identification. Person picking up or dropping off UMNR or elderly customer may go to the ticket counter to get a boarding pass to meet child at the gate.
EXCEPTION: For international passengers (including Canada), parents or guardians may not be permitted through Security. Authorized escorts may accompany the child to the gate or airside area. On interline connections, contact the other airline for the acceptance policy.
After Hours Pick-up
If the ticket counter is closed, the person meeting the UMNR or elderly passenger may go to the Security Checkpoint and request a Ground Security Coordinator (GSC) for a pass authorization to the gate. Some stations use the Baggage Claim area for their Security Checkpoint. Should this be the case, the person picking-up the passenger may request assistance in obtaining a pass authorization in the Baggage area from a Baggage Claim Representative. Please note that local procedures may differ by station.

Off-Schedule Operations
If a flight is delayed while en route, a designated Passenger Service Representative at the connection city will attempt to telephone the person who is to meet the UMNR to advise of the new arrival time for the flight. The child will be permitted to talk to the person at the destination and/or the origination city who is responsible for the child. The PNR will be documented by the Passenger Services Agent with a record of each call, the reason for the delay, and a telephone contact for the child. The child will be kept advised of any changes or progress in the status of his or her flight. The Passenger Service Representative will ensure the child receives food and beverage at no charge to the child.

If the connecting flight is cancelled while the UMNR is at the connecting city and, an overnight stay is required, hotel space will be confirmed for the UMNR along with an escort. Passenger Services will contact parent or guardian to advise of situation.

Both the person who completed the UMNR form and person meeting the child will be contacted and the child will be allowed to talk to both persons. Both persons will be given the name and telephone number of hotel. Passenger services will update PNR with record of each call, reason the delay, location of the child and name of the escort.

If an off-line city or station refers to a destination where there is no American Airlines ground personnel, Flight Services will be responsible for the UMNR throughout the stay at the off-line city. American Airlines will contact the person who is to meet the UMNR at the destination to advise of the situation and new scheduled time of arrival, if possible. If the person at the destination cannot be reached, the person at the originating city will be contacted. American Airlines will handle all expenses for the UMNR.
