Significant Service Expansion at LAX provides More Choices for Customers, fortifies American’s Cornerstone Strategy

Today, American Airlines and American Eagle announced a significant increase in departures at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with plans to add 10 new destinations/cities for a total of 33 additional round trips, or an increase of 28 percent, beginning April 5, 2011. American also will offer seven additional daily flights from LAX, including two additional flights each to Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami and one additional flight each to Chicago, Las Vegas and Orlando.

American’s Los Angeles expansion strengthens its cornerstone network strategy that focuses more flying to and from the markets of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami – the first four contain the largest U.S. metropolitan populations and Miami is an important international gateway to the America's.

  • Los Angeles has long been an important market for American and American Eagle and is a critical international gateway for American as well as its oneworld partners.


  • These markets represent top U.S. commerce centers and are significant international gateways that provide the best connections to American's global network and the networks of its partner airlines in the oneworld® Alliance.

American’s expanded service will add an estimated $600 million a year in local economic impact, increasing its annual economic impact in Los Angeles to approximately $6 billion. The company’s overall economic impact on California is estimated to be almost $9 billion annually.

New Service Choices and Greater Convenience
  • With the expansion announced today, American Eagle will serve nine new domestic routes from LAX on two-class Bombardier CRJ-700 regional jets. Four of the new routes will be served by American Eagle’s upgraded CRJ-700s, which now feature a First Class cabin, and existing flights to Denver will be enhanced and upgraded with CRJ-700 service.

  • American’s new daily nonstop service from LAX to Shanghai will fly into Pudong Terminal 2, close to the airline’s oneworld Alliance partners – making passenger connections smoother a

  • In addition to Los Angeles-Shanghai, American will offer seven additional daily domestic flights from Los Angeles, including two flights each to Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami and one flight each to Chicago, Las Vegas and Orlando.

  • American Eagle plans to expand its terminal, opened last year at LAX, by adding four gates, an investment of up to $20 million. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, giving American Eagle 10 gates at the airport.

Building on Recent Success

Today’s LAX enhancements come on top of several recent changes, including:
  • The Oct. 1, 2010, launch of American Airlines’ joint business with British Airways and Iberia and the resulting news of Iberia Airlines starting four-times-per-week service between LAX and Madrid as a benefit of the joint business. The new service will begin on March 28, 2011.

  • American Airlines and Japan Airlines on Oct. 6 received tentative approval from the DOT for antitrust immunity to form a joint business between North America and Asia, further enhancing LAX as a key international gateway.

  • American announced it will expand its existing codeshare relationship with Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air on flights between the West Coast and Mexico.

Network Strength
  • American’s latest network enhancements at LAX are in addition to the 120 domestic* and 18 international departures offered by oneworld alliance partners at the airport.

  • With the two additional flights to cornerstone cities Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami and one additional flight to Chicago, American now offers 35 daily flights from LAX to:

    • Dallas/Fort Worth – 16

    • Miami – 8

  • With the additions announced on Oct. 20 American will operate 267 daily nonstop flights to 35 destinations from California, serving cities throughout the United States as well as destinations in the Pacific, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Central America.

  • The top four airports in the world with the largest concentration of premium passengers are oneworld hubs -- Heathrow, JFK, LAX and Hong Kong. American and its oneworld partners have a comprehensive route network to the key business markets worldwide. These markets include many of the 15 largest premium markets in the world.

Customer Benefits
  • The new LAX-Shanghai route will enrich American's service offering to China when it launches on April 5, 2011, using 247-seat Boeing 777 aircraft that feature 16 First Class, 37 Business Class and 194 Economy Class seats.

  • American Eagle’s nine First Class seats on its CRJ-700s will offer Los Angeles customers a premium product with the same level of outstanding service customers experience on American Airlines.

  • Customers on Los Angeles flights to/from Denver, Houston Intercontinental, Oklahoma City, Phoenix and one daily flight to/from Albuquerque will be able to enjoy Eagle’s new complimentary First Class dining service that includes a Continental breakfast with cereal or hot oatmeal and yogurt, and a lunch or dinner that includes a fresh salad or a sandwich and dessert.

  • The nine First Class seats are in a 2-1 configuration that offer four-way adjustable headrests, ergonomically contoured back and seat cushions, and an articulated seat bottom that allows customers to recline with less impact to the legroom of the passengers seated behind them.

  • First Class customers receive warm, cleansing towels and mixed nuts before their meals, which are served on china. On flights of shorter duration, beverage service will be accompanied by a gourmet snack mix.

  • American Eagle offers Priority AAccess and Premium Baggage service on all flights offering First Class service.
