White sand beaches, friendly dolphins and warm sunshine. You’ll find all that and more with American Airlines flights to Marco Island, the largest of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. With a casual atmosphere, it’s easy to find as many (or as few) things to do in Marco Island as you wish.
Although Marco Island measures only six miles by four miles, it is the largest of what’s known as the Ten Thousand Islands that reach down to the Keys. As one of the more pristine regional locales, activities in Marco Island center around nature. There are, of course, breathtaking beaches where you can while awhile an entire day soaking up the sun and hunting seashells. But there are also over 200 species of birds who call Marco Island home—making it a premier destination for birdwatchers. The American Bald Eagle resides here, spottings of which are always exciting.
You can get a closer view of marine life by boat, whether you would like to see bottlenose dolphins or even manatees (who live in deep in the Everglades). Avid fishers will find many varieties to pursue here, either by boat or by the shoreline. In fact, fishing is one of the most popular things to do in Marco Island. Local species include red grouper, king mackerel, barracuda and black grouper (among a long list that will excite any angler worth his reel).
Want to connect with Mother Nature? Take a hike – at Rookery Bay Reserve. The Trails Through Time are three separate trails where it’s easy to spot (and identify, thanks to signage) native flora. You can also rent a canoe or kayak for paddling to Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, home to more than 150 bird species, making this one of the most attractive option of things to do in Marco Island for birding enthusiasts.
Has your imagination taken flight? Fly to Marco Island with American Airlines and plan a fun adventure filled with natural beauty and chances to enjoy a slower pace.
