Things to Do in Portland
From savoring the city's foodie scene to exploring the surrounding forests, you'll have a number of interesting activities in Portland from which to choose. Let's start indoors (as the Pacific Northwest has been known to have a rain shower or two). Portland has a rich Native history, which you can discover at one of the city's many museums and historic sites. You'll find Native American artifacts among the 85,000-piece collection at the Oregon Historical Society Museum. Fort Vancouver, a national historic site, features a complete replica of the fur-trading camp established in 1825. And don't miss Pittock Mansion, built at the turn of the 20th century. It's situated high in the hills above Portland and offers sweeping views of the city, while its 23 antique-filled rooms captivate visitors.
Another favorite on our list of things to do in Portland is a culinary tour of the city. Portland is an epicenter of farm-to-table dining, with a bounty of local produce. Portland also has more than 600 food carts, which are found all over the city in small groups so you can sample multiple offerings at the same time. Quench your thirst with a pint from one of more than 50 local breweries, or sample a flight at one of more than a dozen urban wineries. For dessert, the city offers up local chocolates, ice cream and even irresistible doughnuts.
After you've nibbled your way through the city, work it off with one of the most popular activities in Portland: exploring the great outdoors. Portland is an exceptionally green city, with towering trees all around. It's unbelievably easy to find a hiking trail, with great walks right in the middle of the city. Forest Park, at more than 5,000 acres, has more than 80 miles of paths. The Wildwood Trail in particular (at just over 30 miles long) takes you from Pittock Mansion to Hoyt Arboretum and the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. If you're up for a bigger adventure, plan a day trip to the Columbia River Gorge, which features some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world (our favorite is Bridal Veil).
