Things to Do in St. Croix
One of our favorite activities in St. Croix has to be exploring Christiansted and its wide array of shops and boutiques. Shopping on the entire island, by the way, is duty free. Work your way around Christiansted and you'll discover everything from tony shops and boutiques with fashion and jewelry to stands run by local craftsmen with handmade items. There are also art galleries where you can discover a new favorite artist. We enjoy a stroll through King's Alley for its diversity of artisan-crafted wares.
Christiansted is also home to significant places of interest for history buffs. The National Park Service maintains the Christiansted National Historic Site, which includes five structures that give a window onto life on the island in the 18th century. Fort Christiansvaem (built in 1738), Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse (built in 1749), the Steeple Building (built in 1753), Danish Custom House (building in 1844) and the Scale House (built in 1856) all offer unique perspectives on the influences that shaped St. Croix.
Another one of the most popular things to do in St. Croix is to visit the Cruzan Rum Distillery. The same family has been crafting Cruzan rum for eight generations, and guided tours include a visit to the factory's historical windmill. Tours are generally scheduled Monday through Friday and it's advisable to contact the company beforehand to reserve your spot on a tour.
Then, of course, of all the things to do in St. Croix is one of the most relaxing: nothing! Nothing besides unwinding on a picturesque and serene white sand beach. We're especially enamored with Buck Island, which makes a perfect day trip. It's a smaller island just off the coast of St. Croix, offering amazingly clear waters that are wonderful for snorkeling. A barrier reef is home to many species of fish, and there is even a network of underwater snorkeling trails maintained by the National Park Service.
With American Airlines, it's easy to fly to St. Croix and do as much -- or as little -- as you wish!
