Things to Do in Telluride
One of our favorite activities in Telluride is catching glimpses of the region's wildlife, which can happen almost anywhere while you're out and about (which is why brushing up on your safety skills is a must before you go). But if you want to guarantee spotting wildlife, head to the Alaska Zoo. With a natural, wooded environment, the zoo features to nearly 50 species, making it the only place in Alaska to see this large a variety. The zoo is home to many orphaned, injured and endangered animals. Here you'll be able to see both polar and brown bears, moose, caribou, wolves, musk ox, arctic foxes and more. Or head to the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery near downtown, where you can watch salmon swimming upstream.Given its enviable location, it's only natural that the most popular activities in Telluride are skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor adventures. Telluride Ski Resort boasts more than 2,000 skiable acres, bringing skiers and snowboarders from all over the world at every skill level. Telluride receives around 300 inches of snow yearly, and the ski resort itself is not typically as crowded as other Colorado destinations, so lift lines are generally pretty short, making this a great place for a low-stress getaway.
And when warmer weather comes, there are still plenty of things to do in Telluride that take advantage of the great outdoors. Summer is the perfect time to go hiking or biking on the many trails in and around Telluride, including Telluride Ski Resort. Just as with the ski trails, there are biking trails for every skill level. One of our favorites is Bear Creek Trail, which is around two and a half miles long and winds through Bear Creek Preserve as it takes you to Bear Creek Falls. The scenic waterfall is well worth the ride!
More activities in Telluride you can enjoy spring, summer and fall include fly-fishing on the San Miguel River or Dolores River. In fact, the area is known for having excellent trout streams. Just keep in mind you'll need a Colorado fishing license. If angling isn't in your repertoire, try rock climbing the San Juan Mountains. Or discover another one of our favorite activities: whitewater rafting. When all the snow melts, it creates everything from challenging rapids to more calm waters where you can simply float and daydream. If running the rapids sound fun to you, try to visit from late May through October.
This is one destination that has something to offer all year long! From gorgeous snow skiing and snowboarding to hiking, biking and rafting, there's a full range of ways to experience Colorado's outdoor beauty.
