This was one seriously rowdy town a century ago -- in fact, this is where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank, in 1889. Incorporated with the boring name of Columbia in 1878, the mining town assumed its present name the following decade. Some say the name came from tellurium, a gold-bearing ore, while others insist the name really means "to hell you ride," referring to the town's boisterous nature.
Telluride became a National Historic District in 1964, and in 1968 entrepreneur Joe Zoline set to work on a "winter recreation area second to none." The Telluride Ski Company opened its first runs in 1972, and Telluride was a boomtown again. Telluride's first summer festivals (bluegrass in June, film in Sept) were celebrated the following year. Today the resort, at 8,745 feet elevation, is a year-round destination for mountain bikers, skiers, anglers, and hikers. Funky has mostly given way to chic these days, but the surrounding natural beauty remains unforgettable.
Search American Airlines flights to Telluride and start planning your next Colorado adventure! It's where you'll find legendary skiing in the winter, but did you know there are things to do in Telluride even after the powder is gone? Read on for our tips on how to spend your time here no matter what time of year you visit.
Given its enviable location, it's only natural that the most popular activities in Telluride are skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor adventures. Telluride Ski Resort boasts more than 2,000 skiable acres, bringing skiers and snowboarders from all over the world at every skill level. Telluride receives around 300 inches of snow yearly, and the ski resort itself is not typically as crowded as other Colorado destinations, so lift lines are generally pretty short, making this a great place for a low-stress getaway.
And when warmer weather comes, there are still plenty of things to do in Telluride that take advantage of the great outdoors. Summer is the perfect time to go hiking or biking on the many trails in and around Telluride, including Telluride Ski Resort. Just as with the ski trails, there are biking trails for every skill level. One of our favorites is Bear Creek Trail, which is around two and a half miles long and winds through Bear Creek Preserve as it takes you to Bear Creek Falls. The scenic waterfall is well worth the ride!
More activities in Telluride you can enjoy spring, summer and fall include fly-fishing on the San Miguel River or Dolores River. In fact, the area is known for having excellent trout streams. Just keep in mind you'll need a Colorado fishing license. If angling isn't in your repertoire, try rock climbing the San Juan Mountains. Or discover another one of our favorite activities: whitewater rafting. When all the snow melts, it creates everything from challenging rapids to more calm waters where you can simply float and daydream. If running the rapids sound fun to you, try to visit from late May through October.
This is one destination that has something to offer all year long! From gorgeous snow skiing and snowboarding to hiking, biking and rafting, there's a full range of ways to experience Colorado's outdoor beauty.
