Red Cross Logo Earthquake In Haiti
American Airlines is once again partnering with the American Red Cross to help the victims affected by the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. The American Red Cross, through an extensive partnership with the Haitian Red Cross, has made available all of the relief supplies from its warehouse in Panama in addition to deploying disaster management specialists already in Haiti.

If you would like to join us in supporting the victims of the earthquake in Haiti by making a donation, American will reward your generosity with an AAdvantage bonus mile offer.† Through March 31, 2010, AAdvantage members can earn a one-time award of 250 bonus miles for a minimum $50 donation, or 500 bonus miles for a donation of $100 or more to the American Red Cross.

Since the AAdvantage donation program began on January 14, more than 12,000 AAdvantage members have donated more than $1.2 million to the American Red Cross.

Individuals who are interested in volunteering in Haiti are urged to contact relief organizations to learn more about where help is needed most. American and American Eagle cannot transport individuals into Haiti at this time.

American Airlines And American Eagle Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts
American and American Eagle are partnering with relief agencies and U.S. officials to continue humanitarian missions to Haiti.

As of February 1, 2010:
  • On Jan. 13, the day after the earthquake, the company started sending aid into Haiti to provide relief for its more than 100 employees who work at Toussaint L’Ouverture International Airport and for assistance at local hospitals in Port-au-Prince.
  • American Airlines and American Eagle have transported more than 200,000 pounds of aid into Haiti. The airlines continue to partner with companies and charitable organizations to bring over relief workers and supplies.
  • To date, American Airlines and American Eagle have flown 17 relief missions, transporting, medical personnel and relief workers and humanitarian supplies, including bottled water, food, medicine and other non-perishable goods. The airlines have been working with organizations such as:

  • During the first week following the quake (January 13-16), a total of eight American Eagle aircraft arrived in Port-au-Prince providing 80,000 pounds of supplies. American Eagle continues to supply humanitarian aid to Haiti from its San Juan, Puerto Rico hub and has been flying ATR-72 aircraft on these missions.
  • On Wednesday, January 20, American began flying relief missions from its hub in Miami using Boeing 737 aircraft. On its first mission, American evacuated 137 people. On Friday, January 22, 146 people were evacuated. On Monday, January 25, the American relief flight evacuated 133 people.
  • American also flew a mission for the U.S. Department of Defense from Miami using a Boeing 767 aircraft, ferrying military personnel and other government officials into Haiti. On this flight, American evacuated 179 people. Evacuees transported out of Haiti are determined by the U.S. State Department.
  • The Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International, is partnering with American Eagle to bring additional aid to Haiti. The Sandals Foundation will underwrite the cost of 10 humanitarian relief flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Haiti. American will coordinate the relief supplies for the flights, which began Tuesday, February 2 and will continue three times per week though Tuesday, February 23.

    • The flights will be flown on American Eagle ATR-72 each with a capacity to transport 10,000 pounds per mission.
    • The relief items sent will include water, medical and emergency supplies, food and shoes. The flights will also carry medical personnel and relief workers.
    • The supplies carried will be provided by companies and organizations and American will coordinate the transfer and transport.
  • American Airlines has 106 employees at Port-au-Prince, and has been able to make contact with all of its employees. Thankfully, none of our employees have serious injuries.
What American Airlines And American Eagle Employees Are Doing To Help
  • Employees throughout American's system have already set in motion efforts to aid earthquake victims by raising funds and providing assistance in a variety of ways, including:
    • American Giving – Domesticemployees are encouraged to make a donation to the internal American Giving Disaster Relief Fund where the American Airlines and American Eagle Family Fund will make a matching gift of up to $10,000 for all donations made.
    • UNICEF "Champions for Children" Program – All money raised in January and February through American’s “Champions for Children” program will be donated to Haiti relief efforts. Flight Attendants and Admirals Club employees who participate in the Champions for Children program ask customers to donate their unused foreign or domestic currency. Donations can be made on select American flights or in the airline’s Admirals Clubs and Flagship Lounges worldwide. The Champions for Children volunteers support the UNICEF Change for Good® program at American Airlines, a program that has raised more $60 million worldwide since its inception.
    • Dress Down Day – Employees are also being encouraged to coordinate fundraising efforts through their departments, teams or other groups. On Friday, January15, employees were able participate in a Dress Down Day where they wore jeans and tennis shoes in exchange for a donation to a charity. All proceeds from that event are going toward Haiti relief efforts.
    • American Airlines Credit Union ® – The credit union has set up a special fund and is asking all members, which includes non-employees, to make donations through this account, which benefits the American Red Cross.
    • “Hope for Haiti” Telethon -- More than 350 American and American Eagle employees helped man phones at American’s Southern Reservations Office during the star-studded “Hope for Haiti” telethon on Friday, January 22. Celebrities such as George Clooney, Wyclef Jean, Anderson Cooper and Bono appeared on the telethon, which raised money for Haiti relief efforts. Employees answered 15,000 calls during the telethon.
    • Employee-Driven Efforts – American Airlines and American Eagle employees around the globe are doing their part to raise money through bake sales, raffles and other fund-raising activities. Employees at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport have raised almost $30,000 through their efforts. So far, American’s 16 Employee Resource Groups, which reflect a wide range of communities within American’s diverse employee population, have raised more than $25,000 through a variety of activities.
