Customers will have the option of using a self-service kiosk to input the number of checked bags and pay any charges due. The machine updates the reservation, records the tag number and prints the bag tag(s) and receipt. Tags printed by the self-service kiosk will remain inactive until activated by an American agent or authorized representative, and will have a purple border on the front to indicate a self-tagged bag.
After completing the transaction at the self-service kiosk, the customer will be directed to bring bags already tagged, to a special self-tagging position. The American agent or authorized representative at the special position will scan the boarding pass, verify the photo ID and visually inspect the bag(s). The agent or authorized representative will then scan the self-tagged bag to activate the tag and attach any priority tags, if necessary.
Does this mean you won't need agents at the check-in counters anymore?
No. Agents are absolutely vital to customer service. The self-tagging process requires agents or authorized representatives to verify photo IDs, visually inspect bags, activate bag tags, and attach any special markers. By offering customers a new option to check their bags, we hope to improve the customer experience by reducing check-in time and allowing agents to focus on customers requiring extra assistance.
Will self-tagging only be used for domestic flights or will international flights eligible as well?
Self-tagging machines will serve both types of departures.
Are customers required to use self-tagging?
Customers are not required to use the self-service kiosk, but are encouraged to try it and share their feedback.
Are there any passengers that will not be allowed to use self-tagging?
Passengers checking in firearms, and oversized or overweight baggage will be required to see an agent at the ticket counter. Also, the self-tagging process will be cashless - therefore passengers without a valid credit or debit card will be required to see an agent at the regular counter positions.
Are there any security concerns with self-tagging?
No. The self-tagging process has been approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as it does not change how bags are screened by the TSA.
