Mileage Retention Policy - Frequently Asked Questions



Q: When will my miles expire?
A: The first day that miles will expire under the new 18-month Mileage Retention Policy is December 15, 2007. Miles will expire after 18 months of inactivity, that is, if there has not been any mileage earning or mileage redeeming activity in the account. For example, if your account has been inactive since June 15, 2006, all miles in your AAdvantage account will expire on December 15, 2007.
 
Q: How can I prevent miles in my account from expiring?
A: It's easy to keep your account active and retain your miles indefinitely. Any mileage earning or redemption activity maintains your miles for another 18 months. Purchase and fly on eligible fare tickets on American Airlines, American Eagle®, AmericanConnection®, or over 20 participating airlines. Make a purchase with your Citi® / AAdvantage® card. Earn miles with any company participating in the AAdvantage program, including through our buyAAmiles® and shareAAmiles® programs.

Or if you're ready to use your miles, you can maintain your balance by redeeming miles for flights, AAVacationsSM packages, hotel stays or car rentals, or even giving miles to an eligible charity.
 
Q: If I fly on a oneworld® member airline, will that prevent my miles from expiring?
A: If you earn AAdvantage miles by flying on a oneworld member airline, or any of our participating airline partners, that earning activity will prevent your miles from expiring for 18 months. Be sure to verify the fare classes that are eligible for AAdvantage mileage accrual before confirming a ticket with an AAdvantage participating airline.
 
Q: Does any account activity prevent my miles from expiring?
A: Any mileage earning or redeeming activity will prevent your miles from expiring for 18 months.
 
Q: If I earn bonus miles, will that prevent my miles from expiring?
A: Yes. Any miles earned will prevent your miles from expiring for 18 months.
 
Q: If I change my address or subscribe to the AAdvantage eSummary, will that count as account activity?
A: While we encourage you to stay in touch with the latest AAdvantage program news by subscribing to the AAdvantage eSummary, subscribing or changing your address will not prevent your miles from expiring. Miles must be credited to, or redeemed from, your account for it to remain active.
 
Q: If I have no activity in 18 months, will all my miles expire?
A: All miles are subject to expiration with the exception of miles earned prior to July 1, 1989 in accounts established prior to January 1, 1989.
 
Q: Can I share my miles before they expire?
A: Yes. Before your miles expire, you may use the shareAAmiles program. Sharing miles will count as account activity.
 
Q: If I redeem my miles for award travel a week before they expire, how long is the award ticket valid?
A: Unless otherwise specified, an AAdvantage award ticket is valid for one year from the date of issue. In certain cases, special awards (requiring fewer miles than usual) may have a more restrictive ticket validity.
 
Q: If my miles expire, is there a way to get them back?
A: Yes. We currently have a program (through December 31, 2011) that allows you to reactivateAAmilesSM for a charge.
 
Q: If my miles expire, is my account terminated?
A: No. If your miles expire, you account becomes inactive, but remains open. Miles may be earned using your same AAdvantage number. Earning activity would then start a new 18 month activity period.
 
Q: Previously, miles didn't expire until there was no activity in an account for 36 months. Why are you shortening that to 18 months?
A: One of the goals of a mileage expiration policy is to encourage members to be active in the program, earning and using their miles. A 36-month non-expiration period does not keep program usage and benefits top of mind. We hope that by shortening the length of time to retain miles, members will be more engaged. They will earn more miles, use more miles, and get more out of their membership.
 
Q: Do other airlines have similar policies?
A: Yes. United and US Airways both require activity within 18 months. Some low cost carriers expire points every year or two regardless of how active members are in their programs.
 
Q: How can I keep up to date on when my miles will expire?
A: Log in to AA.com with your AAdvantage number and secure password to view your "Last Activity Date" in the "My Account" section. Your miles will expire 18 months from this date if you do not have any mileage earning or redemption activity in the interim. We are in the process of updating our systems to display the earliest possible date that your miles could expire. Until these updates are complete, please use your "Last Activity Date" as your guide, and be sure to extend your miles by having activity before 18 months pass from your "Last Activity Date".
 
Q: When I calculate 18 months from my Last Activity Date, the new date is in 2006! Does this mean my miles have already expired?
A: The first miles will not expire under the new 18-month policy until December 15, 2007. If your Last Activity Date falls within the date range of June 1, 2004 - June 15, 2006 (inclusive), then your miles will not expire until December 15, 2007. And you can keep your miles from expiring on that date by completing a mileage earning or redemption transaction before December 15, 2007. It’s easy to keep your miles from expiring and totally within your control.
 
Q: My Last Activity Date is April 18, 2006. When I calculate 18 months from my Last Activity Date, the new date is October 18, 2007. Is that the date my miles will expire?
A: The 18-month calculation is correct; however the earliest (first) date that miles will expire under the new 18-month policy is December 15, 2007. And you can keep your miles from expiring on that date by completing a mileage earning or redemption transaction before December 15, 2007.
 
Q: My Last Activity Date is May 29, 2004. If I calculate 18 months, the new date is November 29, 2005, but my miles expired on May 29, 2007. Why is that?
A: The new 18-month Mileage Retention Policy was announced June 1, 2007. Any miles that expired prior to June 1, 2007 did in fact expire under the old 36-month Mileage Retention Policy and are no longer available. If you Last Activity Date falls within the date range of January 1, 2000 - May 31, 2004 (inclusive), then your miles expired after 36 months with no activity.
 
Q: My Last Activity Date is October 1, 2006. When I calculate 18 months, the new date is April 1, 2008. Is that the date my miles will expire?
A: Yes, but you can prevent your miles from expiring on that date by having mileage earning or redemption activity before then. If your Last Activity Date is on or after June 16, 2006 then the earliest your miles could expire is 18 months from that Last Activity Date.
 
Q: If my miles will be expiring soon, how much time must I allow for a mileage earning transaction to be credited to my account?
A: Since posting schedules vary by partner, there is no set time that applies to all. For many mileage earning transactions (such as flights, hotel stays, car rentals, AAdvantage DiningSM, and AAdvantage eShoppingSM), it's the date of the activity that "counts" rather than the date miles are credited to the account.
