Changing Your Name?



Need to change the name on your AAdvantage account? You may be able to immediately update the name on your account in the My Account section on AA.com. See below for an overview of the types of updates that can be handled on AA.com as well as those requiring assistance from AAdvantage Customer Service.

One-Time Update Option Available on AA.com

In support of the TSA's new Secure Flight initiative, we recommend updating the name on your AAdvantage account to match the name that appears on the government-issued photo ID you use when traveling. To help ease this process, you may make a one-time change of the first and/or middle name appearing on your AAdvantage account when providing your Secure Flight Information. Please note that any changes to your last name cannot be made via AA.com.

Examples of one-time first and/or middle name corrections that can be managed via the My Account section:
  • Misspelled names ( Vicki vs. Vicky)
  • Abbreviated Names (Susie vs. Susan, Bob vs. Robert)
  • Adding or deleting a middle initial or entire middle name
  • Expand first initial to full first name
  • Reversal of middle and first names
Changes Requiring AAdvantage Customer Service Assistance

Examples of name corrections/changes managed via email* or by calling AAdvantage Customer Service at 1-800-882-8880 and asking for AAdvantage Accounts.
  • Change to a last name*
  • Reversed first and last names (e.g. Dickens Charles and should be Charles Dickens)
  • Adding or changing a prefix (Mrs. to Ms.; Mr. to Dr.)
  • Adding or changing a suffix (John Jones, Sr. to John Jones, MD)
  • Changing a hyphenated name to any of its variations
  • Any additional updates to first and/or middle name following the one-time change made via the My Account section of AA.com (legal documentation may be required)
  Information needed to change a name by phone or email to AAdvantage Customer Service

The following name change requests must be in writing and require legal documentation
  • Change to last name for any reason other than marriage or divorce
  • Change to a first name+
  • Abbreviate first name to initial
  • Fax your request along with the proper legal documentation to the American Airlines AAdvantage Department at 817-963-7882
* Changes to last name without documentation are allowed for instances of marriage or divorce. AAdvantage members who request a last name change for any other reason will be required to submit written legal documentation.

** American Airlines / AAdvantage reserves the right at its discretion to require written legal documentation for any name change request received (including: marital status, military titles, titles and suffixes, nicknames, hyphenated names to any of its variations, inverted name changes, misspelled names, etc).

+ Please note that some changes to first and/or middle names can be handled via the My Account section of AA.com. However, if you have already made a change to this information once, any future changes will require assistance from AAdvantage Customer Service following the guidelines above.
