Baggage and box embargoes to Caribbean/Latin America/Mexico


To provide the best customer service possible and to consider the needs of all passengers, American Airlines is implementing baggage and box embargoes to select Latin American and Caribbean destinations effective between November 29, 2008 and January 10, 2009.

For the embargoed destinations identified below, no boxes or no excess, overweight*, or oversized bags will be accepted as checked baggage. Passengers will be allowed to check a maximum of two pieces and they must be within the size and weight limits as follows:
1st Piece Up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
2nd Piece Up to 62 linear inches and 50 lbs.
Carry-on Up to 45 linear inches and 40 lbs
For the purpose of the embargo overweight applies to bags weighing more than 70 lbs.

NOTE: *Bags weighing between 51 lbs and 70 lbs will be accepted with the collection of the applicable fee.

Plastic tubs, containers and coolers are considered as a box.

CENTRAL AMERICA: San Salvador, San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa
SOUTH AMERICA: Barranquilla, Cali, Medellin, La Paz, Maracaibo, Quito, Santa Cruz
CARIBBEAN: Kingston Manley, Port Au Prince, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Santiago (Dominican Republic)
MEXICO: Guadalajara, Mexico City

American Eagle BAG/BOX EMBARGOED DESTINATIONS
CARIBBEAN: Freeport, George Town, Marsh Harbour, Nassau, (to and from) San Juan
MEXICO: Leon, Guadalajara

SPORTS EQUIPMENT
Golf bags, bikes, surfboards and other sports equipment can be accepted as part of the total checked bag allowance. Extra charges may apply. Please refer to the American Airlines Reservations Center for a list of applicable fees.

CARRY ON BAGGAGE
A maximum of one piece of carry on baggage per person and one personal item will be allowed. For customers traveling on American Airlines, the carry on can be up to 40 lbs and up to 45 linear inches in size.

NON EMBARGOED DESTINATIONS
Normal free baggage allowance and excess charges will apply for all flights to Latin American and Caribbean cities not listed above.

JFK BOX EMBARGO
There is a year round box embargo which applies to ALL Caribbean and Latin American destinations if a passenger is traveling from or through JFK. On these routes no boxes will be accepted at any time.

La Paz and Santa Cruz EMBARGO
La Paz and Santa Cruz have a year-round embargo.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES
Walkers, wheel chairs, and any other assistive devices are excluded from the embargo for customers with disabilities. Medical equipment, medication, and special foods may be considered assistive devices and may be exempt from the embargo.
