International Baggage Allowance

Important update:

For customers purchasing Economy Class tickets on or after 14 September 2009, between Ireland, England, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain and Switzerland and the United States including U.S. Territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the charge for checking a second bag will change. Travelers may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $50 USD.
The changes apply to any flight operated by American Airlines.

* Weight policy for bagage checked to / from or through Europe and Asia:
  • Only bags up to 50 lbs/23 kgs or less will not be subject to an overweight fee.
  • Bags over 50 lbs/23 kgs but less than 70 lbs/32 kgs can also be checked-in but will be subject to an overweight baggage fee of $50 per bag.
  • Bags over 70 lbs/32 kgs cannot be accepted.
If you have any baggage weighing over this limit, please repack them or redistribute the weight into other baggage.

** Personal item policy
  • Passengers traveling on American Airlines to/from or through any airport in Europe, Switzerland and India, will be allowed to bring one personal item onboard on top of the one carry-on bag. A personal item includes a purse, briefcase, laptop or a small book-bag style backpack or a similar item that does not exceed 36in/91cm when adding length + width + height.
*** Total dimensions of the carry-on bag may not exceed 45in/114cm of which each dimension must be no greater than 22in/56cm in length, 18in/45cm in width and 10in/25cm in depth.

Exceptions to free Baggage Allowance:
  • Assistive devices for customers with disabilities such as therapeutic oxygen provided by American Airlines, wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, crutches, canes, braces or other prosthetic devices on which a customer is dependant are not counted toward the free bag allowance.
  • Medical supplies for personal use are accepted under normal baggage acceptance limits.
  • Military personnel may substitute duffel bag, sea bag, B-4 bag, or military footlocker for the 62in/157cm bag only. Any these items will be exempted from the oversize and overweight charges.
The following travellers do not pay the 2nd checked baggage charge
  • AAdvantage Gold, Platinum and Executive Platinum members (or oneworld® equivalent).
  • Passengers booked in First and Business Class as well as those booked in full-fare economy tickets.

Restrictions on transportation of liquids in the cabin

Passengers traveling to the US from any airport in the EU or Switzerland will be subject to restrictions regarding the carrying of liquids and gels onboard the aircraft.
Only the following liquids/gels are allowed in passenger hand luggage:

  • Small quantities of liquids permitted in hand luggage provided they are submitted separately for inspection at security check points. These liquids must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. The containers must be packed in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8in x 8in) or equivalent to 1 ltr (34 fl oz) capacity per passenger. All liquids, gels and aerosols in containers larger than the above must be packed in checked baggage.
  • Baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling.
  • Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger ticket.
  • Insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines.
Liquids include:
  • Water and other drinks, soups, syrups.
  • Creams, lotions and oils.
  • Perfumes.
  • Sprays.
  • Gels, including hair and shower gels.
  • Contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants.
  • Pastes, including toothpaste.
  • Liquid-solid mixtures.
  • Mascara.
  • Any other item of similar consistency.

Annual limits on bags and boxes for all travel between June 6 - August 25, 2009 to select Latin American and Caribbean Destinations

In anticipation of increased holiday travel, excess, oversize, and overweight baggage will not be accepted on American Airlines and American Eagle flights for all travel to and from the cities listed in the table below, between June 6 - August 25, 2009.
  • Baggage will be limited to two checked items (max. 32 kg each) and one carry-on (max. 18kg) .
  • Any checked bag weighing between 23 and 32kg will be subject to an additional $50.00 fee per bag.
  • Likewise, checked boxes will not be accepted.

There is a year-round box embargo for passengers traveling from or through New York's Kennedy Airport to all Caribbean and Latin American destinations.
No excess, oversize, and overweight baggage can be accepted on these flights and boxes can not be checked.

Domestic Baggage Allowance

Important update:
For customers who purchase domestic Economy Class tickets on or after August 14, 2009, the charge for checking a first or second bag will change.

The changes apply for travel on American Airlines, America Eagle and AmericanConnection® flights within the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

These fees do not apply to domestic flights connecting from an international flight, for which the relevant international baggage allowance applies.

Exceptions to this policy include customers who purchase First or Business Class tickets, AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Gold® members as well as customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class.

Additional Information
  • A child carrier can be taken in place of a stroller, but not in addition to a stroller.
  • Child safety seats, diaper bags, child carriers and strollers for a lap or ticketed child are exempt from the carry-on bag allowance.
  • Gate dispatch/escort service is available to customers checking strollers or child carriers at the gate free of charge.
  • Large/luxury/Cadillac style strollers must be checked at the ticket counter or at the gate using the dispatch service and does not count toward the 2 checked bag limit or excess bag limit
  • Diaper bags, strollers and child safety seats are exempt from excess baggage fees and the carry-on baggage allowance.

International Excess/Oversize Charges

  • A maximum of 3 excess pieces of luggage is accepted.
  • Any bag whose linear dimensions (length + width + height) is between 173 and 204 cm (63 – 81 in) is considered oversized.
    Baggage whose linear dimensions exceed 204 cm (80 in) will not be accepted as checked-in or carry-on luggage. Please refer passenger to alternate air cargo company or freight carrier.
  • Any bag whose weight is between 23 and 32 kgs (51 – 70 lbs) is considered overweigt.
    Baggage weighing more than 32 kgs (70 lbs) will not be accepted as checked-in or carry-on luggage. Please refer passenger to alternate air cargo company or freight carrier.

Important advice: Oversize Bag Restriction at Paris Roissy - Charles De Gaulle

Due to CTX machine limitations, all checked bags to / from and through Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris must not exceed the physical dimensions of the X-ray machines as follows:
  • 55 cm x 44 cm x 119 cm (22 in x 17.5 in x 47 in)
  • A bag's total combined dimensions (length + height + width) still cannot exceed 204 cm (80 in).

If the outside of the hard-sided case does not have visible damage, AA/American Eagle/AmericanConnection® carrier are not liable for any damage to the sports item inside the case.
  • Sports cases designed for specific items such as golf bags, boot bags and bike cases are intended to carry only that sports item.

Cabin Seat Baggage (Additional seat for extra baggage)

  • A passenger may book additional adjacent seats.
  • If a passenger qualifies for an electronic ticket for the first seat, the second seat may also be an electronic ticket.
  • Charge all destinations the applicable adult fare, minus any Passenger Facilities Charges (PFCs).
  • If passenger qualifies for a discount for the first seat, they will pay the same fare for the additional seat, minus any PFC charges.
  • AAdvantage Upgrades: not allowed for purchased extra seat, or a cabin baggage seat.
  • Store fare with the ticket designator SEAT to deduct PFC charges.
  • Baggage policy applies to passenger ticket only.
  • Extra seats cannot be purchased for a pet.
