Back to the Big Apple, New York

去年の１１月からスタートしたブログもいよいよ最終回を迎えることになりました。これまで旅した国での思い出を蘇らせながらオススメ・スポットやフォトも紹介させていただきましたが、私にとっては思い出の国へ再び旅が出来たような一年でした。

さて、そんなラストにご案内するのはTHE BIG APPLE、ニューヨークです！小中学時代を過ごした場所でありながら、最近は東京生活にすっかりハマっている私は、ニューヨークへの愛情が少し薄れてしまった気がしていたのです。なんだか遠い過去の思い出の場所のように。しかし、今回のニューヨークの旅でその眠っていた愛情が目覚め、再びこの街にフォール・イン・ラブしました。そう、やっぱりI ♥ NY!

旅はアメリカン航空ニューヨーク行きの夜のフライトでスタート。いつもの金曜日の生放送を終え、余裕の時間で空港に到着。飛行機が離陸した頃にはディナー・タイムという、ワーキング・ウーマンにとっても嬉しいスムースなスケジュールでした。夜のフライトなので無理なく機内で眠る事も出来ました。もちろん食事と豊富な機内エンターテインメントを楽しんだ後ですけどね。

ニューヨークには時差の関係で同じ金曜日の夕方に到着。機内で睡眠をとれたおかげで夜のニューヨーク・シティーに繰り出す元気も十分ありました。夜のフライトって良いですね。

そしてニューヨークも元気いっぱい！到着した日はニューヨーク・ヤンキース・ワールド・シリーズ優勝パレードも行われたばかりで、エンパイア・ステート・ビルもヤンキース・カラーの青＆白にライトアップされるなど街全体に活気が漂っていました。その活気に導かれるまま、着いた夜はヘルズ・キッチンへ。シアター地区に近いこのエリアには、舞台やミュージカルを見終わったお客さんのために夜遅くまでオープンしているレストランが多いそうです。ここで一際目立つフレンチ・ビストロ・レストラン「マルセイユ」で食事をすることにしました。映画「カサブランカ」を思わせるフレンチ・モロッコ風なインテリアで知られるこのレストランでは、様々な地中海料理が楽しめます。私はここのクスクス料理やタルタル、エスカルゴなどアペタイザーが特に美味しいと思いました。ワインの種類も豊富で、テラス席もあるので暖かい時期には外で食事するのもおススメです。

そう言えば今回の旅は天気にも恵まれ本当にラッキーでした。いつもなら東京より冬の訪れが早いニューヨーク、今回は気温も２０度を超える日もあり、晴天続きでした。そんな天気に誘われ、朝は観光客で賑わうタイムズ・スクエアを散歩しながらこの街ならではの巨大ビルボードを眺めながら、上演中のミュージカルや舞台の情報をキャッチ。

実は今年の夏から交通安全をはかるためブロードウェイの一部を歩行者天国にしたタイムズ・スクエア。より安全、より歩きやすいエリアとなり、また広くなった歩道スペースを利用して、テーブルと椅子を出すブロードウェイ沿いのお店も増えている様子でした。ますます良い観光スポットになっていますよ。ちなみにタイムズ・スクエアの「赤い階段」の下のブースではチケットが入手困難な人気ミュージカルの当日割引券も販売されているので、おススメです。

そして何より今回の旅で一番印象的だったのは、セントラル・パークの紅葉ですね。「恋人達の予感」や「クレイマー・クレイマー」などニューヨークが舞台となったヒット映画に登場するセントラル・パーク。紅葉がちょうど見頃で、早速私もカメラを持ってパークへ。本当に癒されました。紅葉をバックにジョッギングする人や、犬と遊ぶ人、体を寄せ合いながら幸せそうに散歩するカップルや馬車に乗る人達の姿、それに記念撮影する花嫁＆花婿もいて、この時期のセントラル・パークは本当にロマンス映画のワンシーンのように美しかったです。

女性の間で大人気の海外ドラマ「セックス＆ザ・シティ」（私も大のファン！）にも何回か登場したセントラル・パーク。主人公のキャリーとミスター・ビッグが滑って湖にドボ～ンと落ちるエピソードもありましたが、それはセントラル・パークの中心エリアにある人気レストラン「ザ・セントラル・パーク・ボートハウス」のテラスで撮影されたのです。知っている人も多いかな？湖に面したオシャレなレストラン、湖の向こうには赤、茶色、黄色と美しい紅葉があり秋のシーズンは最高のスポットです。この時期は平日も人気のレストランなので予約はマスト！

セントラル・パークを散歩しながら南の方へ向かうと、コロンバス・サークルに出ます。ここには２００３年オープンした、今ニューヨークで最もリッチな名所「タイム・ワーナー・センター」があります。アッパー・ウェスト・サイドのツイン・タワーのようにキラキラとそびえ立つ名所の中には、大型ショッピング・モール「ザ・ショップス・アット・コロンバス・サークル」があります。高級ブランドのショップからレストランも沢山！「マンダリン・オリエンタル・ホテル」も入っていますね。

実はニューヨークに住む友人のススメで、３階にある人気のレストラン「ランドマーク」でブランチをしました。なかなか予約がとれない人気レストラン、週末は３０～４０分待ちですが、待っている間はバーでドリンクをオーダーするか、又はモールでショッピングを楽しみのもアイデアです。カジュアルなイタリアン・フレンチ料理のメニューが豊富な「ランドマーク」、私がいただいたステーキサラダ、スパイスが効いたムール貝は絶品でした。

デザートには老舗のカフェ「セレンディピティ３」のフローズン・ホット・チョコレートがおススメです。おとぎ話の中にタイム・スリップしたような幻想的なインテリアを見るだけでも楽しいです。

アッパー・ウェスト・サイドでリッチ気分を味わった後は、芸術あふれるチェルシー地区へ。１６丁目から２７丁目（１０th＆１１thアベニューの間）には３５０以上のアート・ギャラリーが集中しています。全てのギャラリーに足を運ぶことは出来なくてもチェルシーはとてもオシャレなエリアなので、周辺を歩くだけでもアート気分に浸れます。ちなみにギャラリーは日曜と月曜はお休みなのでお忘れなく。

年々オシャレ度が増すチェルシーは本当に素敵なエリア。数年前からプロジェクトが進んでいた陸橋公園「ハイライン」も今年オープンして、ニューヨーカーからも注目されています。８０年代から廃線とされた旧高架鉄道の線路を、公園＆パブリック・スペースとして新たに建築されたハイライン。チェルシー地区とミート・パッキング地区を、地上歩道を利用せずアクセスできるので、ハドソン川を眺めながら公園を散歩して、気が向いたら途中下車？して周辺のギャラリーやショップに足を運ぶのもグッド！フード・スタンドやオシャレな雑貨店が並ぶ、雰囲気たっぷりの「チェルシー・マーケット」も是非寄ってほしいです！

子供の頃ニューヨークに住んでいた時に憧れていたエリア、グリニッチ・ヴィレッジへも行きました。クールでちょっとアンダーグランドなムードを感じさせるエリアには、いつも個性的なファッションをした人の姿がありました。今はチェーン店もこのエリアに増えたようですが、相変わらず"ザ・ヴィレッジ"らしいボヘミアンな雰囲気は健在でした。そんなグリニッチ・ヴィレッジにあるトレンディー・レストラン「バター」。セレブにも人気のお店は「ゴシップ・ガール」や「ザ・ヒルズ」など、オシャレ・ガールはきっと見たことのある人気のテレビ番組にも登場したことがあります。地下にはラウンジ・バーもあり月曜の夜は多くのビューティフル・ピープルも集うそうです。是非オシャレして行ってほしいスポットです。

そしてグラマシー・パーク近くにはとてもチャーミングなレストランがいくつかあります。中でもローフード専門店「ピュア・フード＆ワイン」はおススメです。ロー（生）やオーガニック料理の最先端を誇るアメリカ、ニューヨークには専門店も多くオープンしています。「ピュア・フード＆ワイン」のローフードは動物のお肉や魚、乳製品など動物性食品を使用せず、また、加熱しないお料理がメイン。ヘルシー趣向な人には嬉しいレストランです。

でもこのお店でいただいた料理は、ローフードだとは思わせない本当に美味しいメニューが揃っています。乾燥したナッツをクラッカー状にし、その上にナッツから作られたクリームに椎茸をのせたアペタイザーやゴボウ＆アボガドのり巻、さらに麺の代わりにココナッツの実やズッキーニを使ったメイン・ディッシュ。人気はピスタチオ・ナッツ・ペースト、松の実リコッタが良いアクセントとなっているズッキーニとトマトのラザニア。また生チョコ、カカオやフルーツを使った豊富なデザート・メニュー、日本酒ベースのカクテルも是非ここに来たらトライしてほしいです。

深い赤の壁に落ち着いた間接照明と、こじんまりしたインテリアは長居したくなるような雰囲気が漂っています。奥にはテラスもあって、暖かい季節にはロマンチック・デートにも最適です。

"お店にはローフードを食べに行くレストランだけでなく、美味しい料理を食べに行くという気持ちで来てほしい"とオーナーのサルマさんが言うように専門店だという意識が必要ない、素敵で美味しい料理のレストランです。ん、是非また行きたい！そしてまたニューヨークに行きたい。出来るならまたニューヨークに住みたい！

So here it goes, my last entry for the travel blog with American Airlines. How time flies when you're having fun! As my online journey began with a trip to New York, I thought it would be appropriate to end with a trip to the Big Apple, kind of a full circle or taking a round trip around the world.

It's been 4 years since my last trip to New York and about 25 years since I lived there. Having spent my "formative" years from the age of 7 to 15 in Long Island, the East Coast edge (or attitude to some) is well ingrained into my heart. Though through the years, as Tokyo has become my city, my home, at times I feel New York growing farther away, like a boyfriend from the past. It's times like these when I feel that "New York State of Mind" slipping from my memory that I grow fidgety and need to do make my flight over. When I do, a rush of excitement comes back to me and I am once feeling that New York vibe. I do LOVE New York.

What I never loved is the long flight from Tokyo to New York. This time however, I discovered that taking the night flight made it much easier to sleep on the plane, which makes the flight feel much shorter and less tired upon arrival. It's a great way to go! I was also fortunate to land in New York right after the New York Yankees won the World Series. Driving into the city from JFK and seeing the Empire State Building lit up in Yankees color of blue and white, a sense of pride came over me. Perhaps it was the Japanese side of me feeling proud of Hideki Matsui's MVP performance for the World Series... or it was my childhood days of living in New York coming back to me. Maybe it was both.

My first night in New York City, a good friend from came to meet me and we set out for a late dinner in Hell's Kitchen. Close to the all the theaters, restaurants in Hell's Kitchen are known to serve until late for those who want a bite to eat after a show. We headed over to renowned restaurant owner Simon Ore's French bistro Marseille. The French- Moroccan style interior gives the restaurant a warm relaxed atmosphere and the variety of Mediterranean and North African dishes are impressive, as well as the wine selection. There is terrace seating also, perfect for the warmer days.

The next day started early with a walk through the bustling tourist area of Times Square. Wow! Pretty much describes this area with all the giant billboards and people from all over the world. I was told that since the summer, the Crossroads of the World, part of Broadway has been car-free. I noticed it made it much nicer and safer to walk around and the little red tables and seats in the open space added a nice touch to the lively area. Also noticed the ticket booth selling discount on- the-day tickets for musicals has been stylishly redesigned, but the queue hasn't changed…it's good to know Broadway musicals are still popular as ever.

One of the highlights of my New York trip this time was to see the foliage in Central Park. (I can't remember the last time I saw it. If I did see it, I was probably too young to appreciate it. ) It is no surprise that there are movies shot in Central Park...("When Harry Met Sally", "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Royal Tenenbaums" are just a few, and a few of my favorite New York movies besides the old Woody Allen films.) It is one of the most beautiful parks in the world! With the warm sunny weather on my side, I enjoyed a nostalgic stroll through the park, while maneuvering my camera to capture the deep browns, reds and yellows of the leaves. I hope next time I can visit during the summer months to catch the outdoor cinema series.

As many Sex and the City fans must know, many episodes of the hit TV series were also shot Central Park. One of the scenes I remember (yes, I am a fan) was Carrie and Mr.Big falling into the lake by the Central Park Boathouse. A beautiful lake-side restaurant in the center of the park, I decided to go there for brunch, praying for a miracle that a table was available without a reservation but the wait was long so I opted to take a few photos of the place instead and made a mental note that in New York, make reservations early!

Getting a reservation for weekend brunch was not happening but we decided to wait on this one and took a drink at the bar until out table was ready. If there's a longer wait, shopping at the Shops at Columbus Circle is also a good idea. The French-American mix of menus is sumptuous! The Steak Salad and Mussels are a popular at Landmarc.

For yummy dessert, I went to Serendipity 3 one of New York's oldest café-restaurant located in the Upper East Side. I remember going there once in my teens...with a very cute boy. Ahh the memories flood back! The café is intimate, a bit on the surreal side with all the colorful d?cor and lights but it's a fun place to go. The trademark dessert　is the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. It's sweet and huge enough for two. Sip it with love!!

Discovering art is also essential in New York. From Moma to the MET, big and small galleries, there is art to be enjoyed throughout the city. A casual stroll through Chelsea's art district is also a great way to get to know the city and it's up and coming new artists. From 16th street to 27th, between 10th & 11th, there are over 350 galleries in Chelsea. I found the Chelsea district growing into a charming are of New York City. How stylish it has become from the industrial area I remember from the 80's! This summer, Chelsea and the Meat Packing District welcomed the opening of The Highline. An elevated park created to maintain the old freight train tracks from the 1930's, it runs right under the new Standard hotel and connects the Meat Packing District and Chelsea District. Very green! and stylishly designed. The Chelsea Market is also a great place to shop and eat. Maintaining the structure of an old factory, the upscale market houses bakeries, wine shops, delis, cupcake shops and other lovely little shops.

I also made a trip to Greenwich Village, my favorite place to go when I was a teen. It was the edgy, bohemian cool place to go back then. It still is of course, though it was a little sad to see that the famous (or infamous) hair salon on Astor Place had been resized to only the basement floor and franchise shops that were uncommon while back. Good to see Screaming Mimi's still around! I heard about the trendy restaurant Butter Restaurant in the Village and decided to book a table early. One of the "it" places to go to in New York, so I have seen on TV show "The Hills" , the clientele was indeed posh and beautiful. The simple yet refined interior and the lounge bar is quite attractive too. Monday nights are good for dinner and a night out.

For a beautiful night and beautiful food, I recommend eating at thr raw food restaurant Pure Food and Wine on Irvine Place. This area I noticed has some of the most charming restaurants I've seen in the city.

Discovering how out of touch I am with the evolution of raw food, I was delighted with the creativity that goes into the food at Pure Food and Wine. Other than the popular zucchini & sun dried tomato lasagna and the delicious variety of raw chocolate/cacao desserts, there are other very tasty dishes on their menu: baby tarts made of pecan & black pepper crust, cashew nut cream spiced with chives and other herbs, topped with marinated brown mushrooms and apricot sauce or the burdock root and avocado nori wraps .

You get a sense of eating "clean food", tasting the natural flavors of each ingredient and even smell the spices throughout the restaurant, which added to the experience. You don't have to even know that you are eating raw food.. just go for the experience of good food, and feel good! The deep red colored walls and low lighting holds an intimate, warm atmosphere and the terrace in the back is perfect for a romantic night during the warmer months.

New York is changing constantly, growing more and more vibrant each year. I can't wait to go back.
