Autumn in Italy

今年はゴールデン・ウィークに加え９月の祝日が上手く並び、新たな大型連休がありましたね。シルバー・ウィークを利用して人気のハワイや東南アジアを訪れた日本の観光客も多かったようです。

そんな９月も過ぎ、涼しい秋がやってきました。芸術の秋とか食欲の秋と言われ何かとアクティブに過ごしたくなるこの季節。考えてみると行動的に過ごす意味では夏と変わらないけど、やっぱり秋らしい過ごし方ってありますよね。今年の秋は何処へ行きますか？アメリカ東海岸の紅葉を観るのもグッド・アイデアだし、ボージョレーヌーヴォーを片手にパリで過ごすのもトレ・ボン！またはトリュフがベスト・シーズンのイタリアで、芸術と歴史に囲まれながら過ごすのもボ～ノ・ボ～ノだと思いますよ！イタリアはまた行きたい国です。

私が初めてイタリアを訪れたのは２００５年でした。この一年はオランダやスイス、スロバニア、モロッコ、タンザニアなどヨーロッパとアフリカをたくさん冒険した年でしたが、イタリアは帰国する１ヶ月前に訪れた国でした。歴史的な建物から食べ物、道で見かける人のファッション・センス、その全てにおいてレベルが高いイタリアは想像以上でした。なぜもっと早く行かなかったのか？イタリアへ留学すれば良かった！とまで考えたくらい凄く印象に残った国です。訪れたのは歴史の街ローマ。市内に残る遺跡やローマ帝国時代からそのまま残された建造物には、イタリア初めての人らしいコメントで申し訳ないけど、圧倒されました。口をポカ～ンと明けながら街を歩いていたと思います。今まで写真や映画の世界でしか見なかったコロッセオやトレビの泉、あのヴァチカンを自分の目で見るのは、信じられないほど迫力あり過ぎて、最初は不思議に感じました。それくらいインパクトがあったのでしょうけど、これほど芸術に満ちた街だとは行くまで信じていませんでした。

そんなローマも日本人観光客に慣れている様子でした。日本人スタッフが常時付いている有名イタリア・ブランドのショップもあり、スペイン広場近くのレザー・グッズ店に入ると"いらっしゃいませ"と日本語で言われました。ここのお店はむしろ日本人スタッフの方が多かったのを覚えています。ハワイほどではないかもしれませんが、ローマには日本人に優しいショップがあるのも印象的でした。スペイン広場あたりでショッピングするならVia del Corso通りがおススメです。道両側には女性の心をくすぐるショップがたくさん並び、ローカルのローマン達にも人気のショッピング街だそうです。スペイン広場付近は、レストランやカフェが多く集まっていることで有名です。ワインをグラスでサーブしてくれる老舗のL'Enotecantica Di Via Della Croceは１９世紀から存在するワイン・バーレストラン。お値段もリーズナブルで、デザート・メニューのチョコレート・ケーキは絶品です。その他、ローマン風な食体験をするならシスト橋近くにあるLa Casetta di Trastevereへ。行列が出来るほど人気のあるトラットリアで、小さな広場を前にしているので雰囲気も良いです。

ラグジュアリーあふれるホテルを選ぶならHotel Alephをおススメします。ローマ市内中心に位置する５つ星ホテル、ショッピングにも観光にも便利なロケーションです。内装はコンテンポラリーなデザインですが、スタイリッシュでありながら温かみがあります。そう、ここにはスパもあるのです！

そしてチャンスがあればアヴェンティーノの丘へ行ってみて下さい。近くにはマルタ騎士団長の別荘があります。ここのゲートの鍵穴を覗くと、別荘のガーデンの先にちょうどサンピエトロ寺院が見えるのです。昼も良いですが、夜ライトアップされた寺院をここから見るのもロマンチックです。ちょっと幸せを感じます。

Already 3 months to go until with hit 2010. Hard to believe how fast the year has passed. This year, on top of the Golden Week holidays back in early May, we were blessed with a long holiday week in September known simply as Silver Week. Somehow I always think of the elderly when I hear the name but no matter what it's called, nearly a week of holidays is always welcome into my calendar. So it was off to Hawaii or other exquisite destinations for many of us Japanese travel lovers and we're all rested and ready to enjoy another busy month of October. Autumn in Japan is often referred as the season when we enjoy the foliage and the seasonal foods like Brevoort fish and rare mushrooms. Also it's the season of festivals celebrating the new harvest and a time for sports and art... summer has gone but the new season is also a busy one.

I would imagine popular destinations this time of year would be places like the east coast of the United States for the beautiful foliage or Paris in a months time to "ching ching" with this year's Beaujolais Nouveaux or Italy where art and history thrive... oh and it's the season for truffles too. How buono!

I would love to travel to Italy again this time of year. I still remember how impressed I was with the city. The culture, the arts, the food, the history and the stylish people, everything amazed me. I went to Rome for the first time in 2005, the year I spent studying in Spain. During that year I traveled to several countries through Euroe and Africa but left my trip to Italy for last. I was so impressed with Italy and I wished I had made a visit much earlier during my sabbatical... I guess "Save the Best for Last" did not apply in this case.

Like many, I've seen photos of Rome plenty of times and have watched films set in Rome but when I actually saw the Coliseum, the Vatican and Trevi Fountain and all the other historical sites, I felt as though I was in another dimension. There is strength, a vitality simmering through the city... I felt history still reigns in Rome.

After my initial jaw dropping impression of the city, I decided to head to the streets... the shopping streets of Rome to find how Japanese friendly the shops were. I was surprised to find most designer brand shops have at least one Japanese staff on hand. (How naïve to think Hawaii was the only place with Japanese speaking staff.) I was also welcomed into a leather goods shop in Japanese by Japanese staff... happy as I was to hear Japanese, it did surprise me.

I spent some time walking around the streets near the Spanish steps and found many beautiful boutiques around the popular Via　 del Corso street. There are many cafes and restaurants in this area too. There is a wine bar very close to the Spanish steps called L'Enotecantica Di Via Della Croce liked by the locals and tourists for it's intimate atmosphere and wine served by the glass. The pizzas here were delicious and the chocolate cake is a must try. For other food recommendations, La Casetta di Trastevere near the Sisto Bridge is located inside a small square with cobblestone pavements. It's well known for hearty Roman style dishes and the lines to prove it... but it's worth the wait.

Though there are wonderful hotels and boutique style hotels all across Rome, the hotel I was recommended was Hotel Aleph located in center Rome. It's location is perfect for shopping and sightseeing. The décor is modern contemporary with beautiful style and color. There is a spa too... perfect after a day of soaking up the city... and shopping.

And when in Rome... head out to Aventine Hills and find the gate to the headquarters of the Knights of Malta. Don't step inside... I don't think they will let you in anyway but peep through the keyhole of the gate. You can see the dome of St. Peter's in the distance framed by the bushes of the beautiful garden. It's a small treat but a beautiful one.

I imagine walking the streets of Rome again... wrapped in a warm coat, my cheeks snuggled into a warm scarf, gazing at the beauty of the city.

Music Makes the World Go Round

無人島に一枚だけCDを持って行くとしたら何を選ぶ？と言う質問された事ありませんか？ラジオ業界で働いているせいか、私は結構こんな事を聞かれました。なかなか難しい質問、どう答えたかな？ジョン・レノンのイマジンだったか、モーツァルトの作品だったかな？音楽好きには悩ませる質問でしたね。でも気付いたら最近あまりこう言う質問されなくなりました。何十枚、何百枚のアルバムを収める事が出来るMP3プレイヤーが主流な今、一枚のCDを選ぶ？あまり現実的な話ではないかもしれません。そう言えば旅にどのCDを持って行こうかなぁ？と真剣に「旅CD」を選んでいた時代もありませんでした？　それほど昔のことではないのに、なんだか懐かしく感じます。

時代と共に音楽の聴き方は変わってきていますが、旅と音楽の関係は無くならないと願いたい。いや、きっと無くならないと信じています！旅先で何かを観て、触れて感じるように、または香りで旅を思い出すように、音楽で旅の思い出も蘇ってきますよね。懐メロで元カレを思い出すように。

今年の２月にロスアンゼルスで行われたグラミー賞授賞式を観に行くなど、仕事の関係で音楽イベントや海外のコンサートを観に行くチャンスは過去に何回かありました。３年前にグラミー賞５部門受賞したエイミー・ワインハウスのライブをロンドンの名会場「シェッパーズ・ブッシュ・エンパイヤー」で観る機会もあり、彼女の曲を聴く度にロンドンの旅を思い出します。

１９０３年に創業されたこの会場、元々は演劇場で、初めてここの舞台に立ったのはチャーリー・チャップリンだったとか。９０年代から音楽コンサートのホールとして人気ですが、館内は２０世紀初期のビクトリア風なデザインそのまま残され、とても素敵な雰囲気。会場前には約３０平方メートルの芝生エリアがあり、天気の良い夏の日はライブ前のカクテルを楽しむファンが集まり賑やかです。ほぼ毎日コンサートが行われているのでロンドンに行くときはライブ・スケジュールを事前にチェックしておくのもアイデアですね。

音楽ホールと言えばロンドンのサウス・ケンジントン近くには有名な「ロイヤル・アルバート・ホール」もあります。ハイド・パークを前にした立派なドーム形のホール。かなりゴージャス！キャパシティーは８，０００人と大きめな会場ですが、演劇、クラシック、ロック＆ポップスのライブなど幅広いジャンルのショーが開催されています。１０月には日本でも大ブレイクしたブエナ・ヴィスタ・ソーシャル・クラブのバックバンドを務めた「ORCHESTA BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB」のコンサートや、ロンドンで是非観たいロイヤル・フィルハーモニック・オーケストラのパフォーマンスも予定されています。

音楽を理由にスペインのマヨルカ島に旅したこともあります。作曲家フレデリック・ショパンが恋人と暮らしたこの島、今はマイケル・ダグラスやボブ・ゲルドフ、リチャード・ブランソンといった大物セレブが家を持つお洒落なバカンス・アイランドです。

２００５年の夏「ワン・ジャイアント・リープ」と言うイギリス出身のユニットの作品を手伝うためマヨルカ島に一週間ほど滞在。世界中を旅しながら様々なアーティストや著名人とコラボしつつ作品を作るという、斬新なプロジェクトを手がける彼ら。ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、アメリカ、中東、アジアと様々な文化を感じさせるサウンドと映像は今まで聴いたことない、観たことのないスケールの大きい作品を世に送り出しています。世界中から集めた音と映像を持って、彼らはマヨルカ島で家を借り編集作業に取りかかっていました。

美しい島で仕事をするという発想もなかなかオシャレなワン・ジャイアント・リープ、「日本で撮った映像や歌を、マヨルカ島に来て翻訳をしてほしい」と私に声をかけてくれたのです。当時はスペインのマドリードに住んでいたということもあり、すぐに飛行機に乗って向かいました。フライトも２時間ほどとあっと言う間でした。マヨルカの特徴は美しい海とビーチ、そして断崖絶壁からの絶景やその間に点在する中世の町並み。最も栄えているパルマには白いパラソルで覆われたテラス・カフェやレストランがあり、夏には観光客で賑わうビーチ沿いの大型クラブもオープンしています。ゆっくりするなら私が滞在した北部のソイエール（ここの山々のパノラマには圧倒されました）又は、多くのセレブが集まる高級エリア、デイアでオシャレなレストランやカフェでセレブ気分に浸るのもマヨルカ風です。

ワン・ジャイアント・リープの最新作を完成させるまでいることが出来なかったのは残念ですが、彼らのサウンドを聴いて今日もマヨルカ島を思い出しています。

旅をして新たな音楽の出会い、音楽に導かれ新たな旅を始める。次は何処へ向かいましょう？

"If you could bring one CD to a deserted island, which CD would you take?" Remember those questions that would pop up once in a while? I used to get this type of question thrown at me often and the first thought that would cross my mind was "I would dread being stuck on a deserted island with just ONE CD please No!" I think I answered something along the lines of John Lennon's Imagine or anything from Mozart, trying to show some taste in music but honestly, it would be a nightmare to listen to only one CD. These days however, I'm hardly ever asked this question probably because we are in the 21st century and thanks to MP3 players and the like, we get to bring several HUNDRED albums wherever we go. Though I am still a believer in CDs that take up a good portion of my small apartment, I chuckle a little when I think about the days when I used to carefully choose the CDs I want to bring on a trip. (mind you it was only a while ago!) Times have certainly changed (rapidly) and I do surrender to the conveniences of the world of not having to carry a load of CDs around and listening to one album endlessly on my bulky portable CD player.

So the WAY we listen to music and create music has changed, but essentially music is always going to be a major part of our lives, that I hope will never change. Music brings awareness, brings people together, creates thoughts and teaches us how to love and feel loved... the positive effects of music is endless! I also believe that music plays a part when traveling. It's right up there with seeing marvelous sights or smelling the aromas of a country. There is music to be discovered in every place we go and they will always carry memories and feelings of that left an impression. Like the aromas that remind you of your x-lover, songs have that same effect.

Traveling to check out music events is something I have been fortunate to do. This year I spent a few lovely days in Los Angeles to attend the Grammy Awards as well as a visit the new Grammy Museum where Michael Jackson's wardrobe from past Grammy Awards are on display. 3 years ago, I was sent to London to see and interview Grammy winner Amy Winehouse at the Shepherds Bush Empire.

Originally built as a theatre in 1903, rumor has it Charlie Chaplin was the first artist to perform there. Though it's become more popular as a venue for music since the 90's, the Victorian décor is still intact giving it a unique intimate London atmosphere. The green in front of the venue is also a nice spot to enjoy pre-concert drinks, especially during the summer months. There are concerts going on here almost every day so if you ever want to visit, it might a good idea to check the lineup.

Another concert hall to visit would be the famous Royal Albert Hall in Kensington. The 200 year old beautiful dome shaped hall stands proudly facing Hyde Park. It holds about 8,000 people with frequent performances ranging from classic theatre to mainstream rock and pops. October's lineup includes Orchesta Buena Vista Social Club and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which is something I would love to see at the Royal Albert Hall.

Music also led me to visit the beautiful Spanish island of Mallorca. Known for the island once Chopin and his lover lived, it is now one of the most popular holidays destinations of Europe. From Michael Douglas to Bob Geldof and Richard Branson, it is also the desired island for the rich and famous.

I was invited to go to Mallorca in the summer of 2005, the year I lived in Madrid by the English duo 1 Giant Leap. They are a concept band traveling the world to record music and footage by collaborating and interviewing musicians and artists of all corners of the world. After 6 months of traveling through Europe, Africa, America, Asia and the Middle East, they settled in Mallorca to organize, mix & edit their latest album. I can't begin to say how much respect and admiration I have for the guys venturing out into such a journey and love them for choosing Mallorca!

They asked me to come to Mallorca to help translate some of the lyrics to the music they recorded in Japan as well as transcribe the interviews they did with Japanese artists. Just a short 2 hour flight from Madrid, I was in Mallorca in a few days and got working. It was hard work but working while taking in the sites of Mallorca was not a bad deal at all. Mallorca is famous for the calm Mediteranean sea, white sand beaches, the panorama of the Northern mountains and pockets of small towns that still embrace the Middle Age fa?ade. The capital of Palma is of course the main area for water front restaurants, cafes filled with white parasol terraces and clubs that go on 24-7 during the summer months. The more quiet part of the island would be parts like Soller, where I stayed with beautiful mountain landscapes or the posh area of Deia, most popular amongst the rich and famous with intimately stylish restaurants and beautiful houses over looking the sea. Just driving through this area makes you feel special!

It was a special trip and I wished I could of stayed longer to see and hear their finished masterpiece but listening to their music always brings me back to the Mediteranean.

Travel for music and music for travel... I look forward to what musical journey will come my way next.

Discovering the Deep Sea of Malaysia

だんだんと秋らしくなってきましたね。夏の終わりを告げるかのように、空気が少し軽く感じられるようになり、空も高く、雲の形も変わって来ているのが分かります。こんな時期、子供の頃を思い出します。夏休みが終わって学校に戻らなきゃと言う時のあの心寂しさ、覚えています？学校が楽しみだった人もきっといるでしょうけど、私の場合、もうそんな長い夏休みはないのに、９月になるとあの学生の頃の心寂しさがこみ上げてきます。夏の日差しを浴びて元気をもらい、海を眺めて希望を湧かせると言うサマー・シーズン、去ってしまうのはやっぱり寂しい。

そんな去ってしまう夏。今年はどのように過ごしましたか？今年は梅雨が長かったので夏はあっと言う間だった気もしますが、私はビーチや音楽フェスティバル、花火大会を観に行くなどして充実した夏を過ごしていました。やり残した事？一夏の恋？もそうですが、伊豆でダイビングをする計画をたてたままのことですかね。

スキューバ・ダイビングのライセンスを取得して１０年以上になります。今でも海のあるデスティネーションでダイブ・ショップを見つけては必ず旅先の海を潜っています。これまでの経験でいくと、海の世界で旅先のことを知る素晴らしさに加え、一緒に潜る人達とお話しも出来るし、いろんな出会いや発見があるのでとても楽しいです。正直言うと、私はマイ道具や水中カメラを持つほどの徹底したダイバーではありませんが、一人でダイブ・トリップに出かけたこともあります。

ダイビングに詳しい友人に教えてもらったのは、世界トップ・クラスのダイブが楽しめるマレイシアのシパダン島。日本からはコタキナバルから国内線でマレイシアの東のタワウへ渡り、さらにバスと高速ボートに乗ると言うちょっとハードなトラベル・アドベンチャーを経て辿り着く島です。時間に余裕があるならコタキナバルで一泊をしてから旅を続けるのがベスト。コタキナバルは中国文化、マレイ、インドネシア文化と少し西洋文化が混じり合った町。食事も様々ですが、おススメは観光客とローカルの人々で賑わうオープン・マーケット。ここには新鮮魚を好きに調理してくれる屋台が沢山集まっていて、どの屋台でどの魚をどの風にいただくか迷ってしまいますが、どこも美味しいです。ワイワイと屋台で時間を過ごすのも良いですが、足を伸ばしてオージー風のパブやバーが並ぶウォーターフロントに寄るのも面白いと思います。

コタキナバルで一休みしてからいよいよダイブ・メッカのシパダン島へ。私のようにそれほどマリン・ライフに詳しくなくても、ここで見られる海の生き物は素晴らしい！水深６００メートルのダイブ・ポイントや巨大ウミガメ、バラクーダの大群などが頻繁に現れる、まさに海のワンダーランドです。２００４年からエコ・ライフを守る目的でシパダン島での宿泊は禁止されるようになり、それ以来はタワウや近くに作られた水上リゾートでの宿泊が勧められています。私が見つけた水上リゾートはシパダン島までボートで１５分の「シパダン・カパライ・リゾート」。海の上のホテルと聞くだけでもロマンチックですが、３６０度見渡すところ海と水平線だけ！各バンガローはウッド調のシンプルなデザインでありながら広いテラスと海を指で触れられそうなバスタブがあったり、とても素敵です。中心にはレストランやデッキもあり一日ダイビングした後はゆっくり過ごせるスペースがあります。夕日が水平線に沈んで行く時の空のグラデーションはこの世になく美しい。

肝心のダイビングですが、ここから毎日２回はシパダン島行きのボートが出ていますし、カラパイですぐに海にドボ～ンとダイビングすることも可能です。（ダイビングなのでちゃんとルールを守っての話ですけど。）

シパダン島の一人旅を思い出す今、こんな目的のある旅をもう一度したいと思っています。その前に伊豆ダイビングの計画を進めないとね。

Another change of season is upon us, I can feel it in the air. The sky seem higher, the shape of the clouds have changed and the light breeze at night carry a slight scent of melancholy... Autumn is slowly making its way. As much as I enjoy the cooler days, that sinking feeling I used to feel as a child at the end of summer break still creeps up on me around this time of year. Maybe I am a child at heart, or just watching too many summer romance movies but I can't help to feel a little sad to say "hasta luego" to my favorite season.

So how was the summer of '09? In Tokyo, the rainy season lasted longer than usual so summer felt pretty short but I made to sure to make my rounds cheering on the my favorite bands at summer music festivals and being mesmerized by summer fireworks, and of course hitting the beautiful beaches of Shizuoka. It's been fun! Though there are a few things on my summer to do list I still haven’t gotten around to.. like eating cotton candy at a Japanese matsuri... learning how to surf, a summer romance or two? Would've been nice! I thought about scuba diving in Izu too. I've taken a little break from scuba diving recently which is odd since... well, I really like it!

In the past, if I would travel to anywhere near an ocean, which is often, I would make sure to take my diving license and make an effort to get at least one day to dive. It's one of the most entertaining ways to get to know your travel destination and also a wonderful way to get to meet new people. I admit I'm far from an expert diver and don't own my own equipment or heavy underwater cameras like many avid divers but the discoveries of the sea never seizes to amaze me.

One of the most impressive diving I've experienced was in Sipadan, a tiny island off the coast of western Malaysia. I was told about the island from a good friend who also loves to travel so few summers ago, I decided to take a short trip down there on my own. The best way to get to Sipadan is probably flying directly to Kota Kinabalu then fly domestic to the east coast then travel by bus and boat. It can be quite an adventure getting down there so I would recommend staying a night in Kota Kinabalu before heading east. Kota Kinabalu because of its location, it is a city with a mixture of cultures ranging from Malay, Chinese to Indonesian and European. Taking a trip to the open food market is a fun way to start the evening where there are restaurants with fresh seafood laid out by the entrance in baskets and water tanks. You can choose what you like and they'll cook it just the way you want...yum! European style bars and cafés are by the waterfront for that late night drink.

After a nights rest in Kota Kinabalu, it's off to the east coast to Sipadan. The island has a 600 meters deep dive spot and is a beacon for one of the richest marine life in the world. An encyclopedia of macro life to schools of barracuda, manta rays, eagle rays, sharks and even the rare pigmy sea horse can be seen here. To conserve the ecosystem of the islands surroundings, the government of Malaysia has moved all accommodations and dive operation off the island since 2004 so technically, one never "stays" on the island but all visitors find accommodation on the coast of Tawau or with the few water bungalow resorts nearby. I stayed at Sipadan-Kapalai Resort, a beautiful water bungalow resort located approximately 15 minutes by boat from Sipadan. Build on a shallow jetty in the middle of the ocean, the resort is made of wooden chalet style rooms connected by a boardwalk.

All diving equipment is available with 2 daily trips to Sipadan. Lounge spaces and terraces for relaxing when not diving surround the resort. It's 360 degrees of water as far as you can see from Kalapai and to see the Sun sink into the horizon from this resort, colors of the sky change from purple pink to orange, is an absolute delight.

Unitl I dive again... maybe in Izu, I'll reminisce on the days I spent on and in the seas off of Malaysia.

Desert Winds of the Canary Islands

先日、私が担当するラジオ番組に旅行作家の方がゲストに来てくれました。旅行作家というタイトルは響きも良いですし、とても刺激のあるお仕事ではないでしょうか。憧れます！その日はスイスを列車に乗って旅する話でしたが、スイス・アルプスの美しさを想像しながらまだまだ世界の見ていない場所が沢山あると実感。それに彼女は７０以上の国へ旅したそうです。私は７０国の名前をあげられるかどうか、自信がないかも。

７０ヶ国へ旅するチャレンジも素敵ですが、一つの国をじっくり網羅すると言う旅もちょっと贅沢だと思いません？

スペイン留学中は、オフの時間を利用して出来るだけスペインを旅しました。首都のマドリードに住んでいたので何処に行くにもアクセスも便利だし、スペインは縦長で山の多い日本と違って、比較的平地な国なので、どんな交通手段をとっても旅しやすいのです。それに夏のマドリードは "Como Horno! －まるでオーブンのよう！"と夏になるとよく耳にする通り、気温は高く雨もなかなか降ってくれないのです。７月から８月にかけてのマドリードはホリデーに出かける人が多い影響で、街が寂しくなります。一ヶ月近く夏休みのため閉めているお店も結構あります。お店のドアに "Cerrado por Vacaciones －バケーションのため閉店" と書かれた紙が貼ってあるのを思い出します。日本ではそこまではっきりとした張り紙は見ないかも知れませんが、とても素直で国のキャラがよく出ていると思います。そんな事もあって、スペインにいた夏は良く旅をしていました。

さて、そんなバケーション・モードが頂点に達しているこの時期、スペインの海岸や離島はヨーロピアンにとっての人気のデスティネーション。マラガやマルベーヤのあるアンダルシア地方をはじめ、バレンシア地方、イビサやマヨルカが浮かぶバレアレス諸島も大人気。そしてスペイン南西に位置するカナリアス諸島もこの時期は多くの観光客で賑わっていることでしょう。

カナリアス諸島はスペイン領ですが、ロケーションはどちらかと言うとアフリカ大陸に近いです。大西洋に浮かぶカナリアス諸島は、火山の噴火から生まれた７つの島からなり、サハラ砂漠からの風が吹く火山と砂漠の影響がミックスされた個性的な群島です。夏に限らず冬でも行けるリゾートがあり、風を求めて多くのウィンドサーファーや、ここ数年はカイトサーファーも数多くやってきます。そう言えばウィンドサーフィン界のトップ・スターだったビヨーン・ダンカーベックもカナリアス出身でしたね。彼、めちゃカッコ良いです！

私がスペインにいた２００５年、カナリアス諸島を２回訪れました。７つの島の内の２つ、フエルテベントゥーラ島とランサローテ島。アフリカ大陸に最も近いフエルテベントゥーラ島は名前も「強い風」を意味するように、常に風が吹いている島。ワイドな白砂ビーチにエメラルド・グリーンに輝く海、そして滑らかに映る山並みと強く差す太陽、アフリカの大地を想像させる所があります。

リゾート・ホテルも充実しています。ロングステイするならヴィラを探すのもおススメですが、サービスを考えるとリゾートが良いかも知れません。中でも私が泊まったビーチフロント・ホテル H10 TINDAYAはインドア＆アウトドア・プールもあり、タラソテラピーを受けられるスパもあってゴージャスなリゾートです。この島には自然公園があり、北にあるコロレホには季節により形が変わる砂丘が続き、まるでアラビアのローレンスのような気分にさせられます。

そしてフエルテベントゥーラ島の真上に位置するランサローテ島は、ゴロゴロとした岩や休火山の背景が魅力的。まるで月にいるよう？月はこんな感じなのかと想像します。ランサローテ島にはこの島を愛した芸術家セサール・マンリケの建造物や、彼が設計した展望台ミラドール・デル・リオもあります。ランサローテ島の溶岩が作った自然のトンネルや壁を活かし、モダンな建築を融合させると言うユニークなデザイン。島に残された彼の建築物は全てスタイリッシュで開放感があります。自然が活かされたカナリアス諸島の独特な個性と生命力を感じます。

If you had a chance to change your job description, what would it be? Hollywood actor? Racecar driver? Songwriter? Athlete? Don't get me wrong, I love being a radio DJ but sometimes it's fun to imagine what options that may be out there. Just the other day, we had a travel writer come to my radio show to talk about her travels through Switzerland. She spoke with such excitement when describing the beauty of the country. It really made me want to travel again and it was a delight to see how much she enjoyed what she did as a travel writer. She told us she had been to over 70 countries... I don't think I could travel to that many countries in my lifetime, let alone name 70 countries.

Though I wouldn't mind in the least to travel to all the countries in the world, it's also something to travel through one country. That is a luxury in itself.

When I studied in Spain couple years back, I made an effort to travel through the country whenever I had free time. I think I did a fairly good job of touching all directions of the country. It made it easier living in Madrid where any place was accessible by plane, train or automobile. This time of year, Madrid's temperature rise to over 30 degrees and the rain may really be falling on the plains because it sure doesn't fall anywhere near the capitol. So Madrilenos pretty much "flee" the city this time of year saying "Como horno!" (It's like an oven!) and small shops decide to close for almost a whole month by announcing simply "Cerrado por Vacaciones" (Closed for Vacation ). Yes, we all need and deserve time off for a good vacation!

July and August are great months to hit the coast and islands of Spain. Down to Malaga and Marbella in Andalucia or Costa Brava to see and be seen, party hard in the Baleares 24-7 hopping through Ibiza and Mallorca would be another great option. On the Atlantic Ocean side of the country, close to Africa, are the Canary Islands. The archipelago is famous for the volcanic islands and desert winds of the Sahara. There are 7 islands in all, each with its unique character. It has moderate climate throughout the year so though it may be cool during the winter, resort hotels stay open through the seasons. Also the islands are known for spectacular winds, which attract avid board sailors and recently kite surfers. If I recall, one of windsurfing's top stars Bjoern Dunkerbeck grew up in the Canaries.

I have been to the Canary Islands twice; once to Fuerteventura and the other to Lanzarote. As the name refers, Fuerteventura meaning "Strong wind" , is the closest island to Africa and it may in fact be the windiest islands of the Canaries. Natural parks in the north with serine sand dunes and long white beaches in the south give this island a feel of the Sahara.

More remote than the other islands but there are gorgeous resort hotels popping up. I stayed at the H10 Tindaya hotelnear Costa Calma. A beachfront hotel with Indoor and outdoor pools with pool side bar. There's also a spa specializing in Thalassotherapy and massage. It's a luxurious sea side hotel to be fully pampered and rejuvenate. Lounging by the pool or on the beach is a must but a short drive to the north around Collejo could be fun. The large dunes created by the winds carrying the sand from the Sahara are beautiful and serene... confident like Lawrence of Arabia!

Lanzarote is located north of Fuerteventura. More mountainous and rocky than it's neighboring island, the island gives off a feel of being on the moon. Solidified lava and volcanic tunnels are an attraction and the southern white sand beaches are popular with tourists. When in Lanzarote, one can't go without seeing art left by renowned artist Cesar Manrique who lived and loved this island. Blending natural volcanic forms with modern architecture, Manrique’s art work can be seen through the island such as his home, (open to the public) and the famous Mirador Del Rio, the viewpoint with a stunning view of La Graciosa. It's absolutey beautiful!

Bringing Home Memories

夏まっただ中です。今年の夏休みの予定はもう決まりましたか？旅行先を決め、ホテルや滞在期間の過ごし方などプランして旅立つまでのカウントダウン・カレンダーまで作っちゃたりして、ワクワクしますね。いろいろ予定を立てていると仕事がなかなか進まない、でもそれまでにやらなくてはいけない仕事が。あぁぁ～それはあまり考えたくない！でも頑張った後にはホリデーが待っているので張り切っていきましょう！

そんな計画やイメージ・トリップするとことから旅は始まり、帰国してからも旅行の余韻は残ります。（時差ボケの事ではありませんよ。）一緒に旅した人と作った思い出は一生残るし、もちろん旅先で撮った写真やビデオで思い出は蘇ります。私も写真も沢山撮りますが、旅先にノートを持って行く時もあって、ちょっとした旅行日記を作ることもあります。トランジットの時に書いたり、絵を描いてみたりと自由に書き込んでいるので人には見せるほどではありませんが、今でもそれを持ち出してはペラペラとページを捲って読み直すこともあります。また、旅した場所を人に薦める時にも参考にしています。忘れてしまった、旅先で会った人達の名前やレストランの名前も載っていて、知らないうちに自分流のガイドブックになっていたりして、ノートによっては訪れた場所の香りも残っているので旅先での気持ちまで蘇ってきます。旅ノートは大事に保管しています。

そして旅行中に買ったお土産や小物で旅を思い出すのもなかなか面白いです。アフリカ・ザンジバルのビーチでマサイ族に作ってもらったブレスレットはパーツがシャリシャリと言う音がして、鳴らす度にザンジバルの海を思い出します。モロッコのガイドさんに連れて行かれた数々のお土産屋さんで見つけたアンモナイトの小物入れ。どれも模様が素敵で選ぶのにかなり時間をかけてしまい、ガイドさんがちょっと疲れ気味だったのを思い出して一人笑い。そしてベトナムで見つけたキャンドル・ホルダーに一目惚れしてしまい、重かったけど持って帰ったことなど、それぞれの買い物にエピソードがありました。他にも中国の海南島に行った際、ローカルのお茶屋さんで見つけたバラの様に咲く茶葉をお土産と合わせて大量に買ってしまい、"日本人の買い物する勢いはやっぱり凄いね"と笑いながら言っていた店員さん、お世話になりました。

アメリカにいる時は本屋さんでブラブラするのが好きな私、一日中ブックストアにいられます。最近はBarnes & Nobleの様な大きな書店チェーンに行くとコーヒー・ショップも入っているので、最新の小説から日本では見つけにくい洋書をチェックしながらコーヒーと共に過ごす。あまり旅行と言うイメージはないかもしれませんが、私にとってのアメリカ流の過ごし方って感じです。洋書はハード・カバーもあるので持って帰るのはちょっと考えてしまいますが、ブックストアにはお土産にも最適なポケット・カレンダーや文房具など楽しいグッズを見つける事が出来ます。私も以前アメリカに旅した時にブックストアで「52 Things to Try Once in Your Life」訳して「人生で一度トライしたい５２の事」と書かれたトランプを購入した事があります。カード・ゲームで使うトランプ同様、箱にカードが５２枚入っていてそれぞれに人生に一度トライしてみたいヒントが可愛い絵と共に描かれているのです。例えば「Sleep Under the Stars （星空の下で寝る）」、「A Spontaneous Trip （行き当たりばったりで旅をしてみる）」とか「Ride a Horse （馬に乗ってみる）」と言った簡単な英語で書かれたヒント。子供用に作られたカードではありますが、大人になっても時々インスピレーションをもらうために見ています。

ショッピングが楽しいロスアンジェルスへ旅した今年。注目のロバートソン・ブルバードやザ・グローブで買い物三昧しました。人気のお店「KITSON」ではメーク・ポーチ、そしてナチュラル・ボディ・ケア・ショップ「FRESH」で香りもパッケージもお洒落なソープをお土産に、そして自分用にもゲット。今も香りを楽しみながらロスの華やかな旅行を思い出しています。気づけば五感を通して旅の余韻を楽しんでいる私。世界中から集めた小物で随分と部屋の雰囲気も変わってきています。

Summer is in full swing! All set and ready for a nice holiday? Deciding where to go, who to go with, booking a flight and reserving the perfect hotel are all part of what makes traveling fun. I admit, preparing a trip can be a challenge but I always look back and realize how exciting planning can be and also good planning makes for a smooth, problem free holiday. The other things like getting work done before the trip is, well... rather not think about that right now. Let's just focus on that much deserved summer vacation.

I can surely say a great holiday includes the part we let our imagination run astray and dream about what awaits or who we may run into... yes yes, that handsome man sitting next to me on the plane or the super hot scuba diving instructor. And even though holidays may not go exactly as one may have imagined, there's always a great story of the days spent abroad and the memories last forever. Like many travel lovers, I never go without my camera and do my best to capture those special moments wherever I am. I also take a memo pad with me to record random thoughts, sketch landscapes or mindless doodles I find myself drawing during transit. After a while it transforms into little travel journal so when I'm home, even now, I flip through them to reacquaint myself of those great adventures. Some of the pages still carry aromas of the places I've been to... scents always being back memories. It's also a good way to record the little details like names of restaurants or hard to find local nightspots, you never know when you have to write about them!

There are always items that carry memories of a holiday. I guess that's why they call them "memorabilia"? I try to practice self-control when it comes to shopping abroad but when I think I won't be visiting the same place twice I find it difficult not to shop. Overall, I have no regrets about carrying some of those things back with me. They always bring back memories. For example, the beaded bracelets I bought from Masais on the beach in Zanzibar, Africa. The silver petals that hang from the bracelet make a jingling sound, almost like a soft chime. I love the sound it makes. It brings back images of the beautiful Indian Ocean... and the handsome scuba diving instructor. Every time I look for coins inside my ammonite trinket box from Morocco, I remember how I took too long in choosing the box and how our guide tried hard to hide his impatience. It was devilish of me, but also pretty amusing. I even carried two beautiful but heavy candleholders back from Hanoi, Vietnam. The candle is placed inside the holder and the light creates floral patterns on the wall. I had to have them! I also felt an immediate urge to buy tealeaves at a local teashop when down in Hainan Island, China. Tea formed into balls with flower petals inside bloom when places in hot water. It's a delight to see and quite tasty too. I decided I would bring back several packages to give to friends back home, which turned into me buying almost the whole batch. I'm sure I gave the locals of Hainan enough reason to think Japanese people can be crazy shoppers.

When I visit the United States, I like to browse through the big bookstores like Barnes & Noble to check on the latest novels and rarities that are not easy to find in Japan. These days many have coffee shops inside the stores so I like to spend time with a new novel and sit down to read a few chapters with a hot cup of latte. It may not be an ideal way to spend a holiday but I find it comforting to sit in a grand space surrounded by books. And there's more than books at a bookstore. There are fun pocket sized calendars and puzzles, stationeries great for gifts too. I recently found a deck of cards titled "52 Things to Try Once in Your Life" Cutely decorated cards with hints to try once in your life, like "Ride a Horse", "Spontaneous trip" or "Sleep Under the Stars" to "Write an acceptance speech for an Academy Award"!! I still like to go through them from time to time to check if I've done a few of those things. It makes me smile and at times truly gets me inspired.

Wonders of Morocco (part 2)

モロッコを観光中、何回か日本語で"ラクダは楽だぁ～"と呼びかけられたのを覚えています。最初は"エッ？"と自分の耳を疑いましたが、確かにそう言いながらモロッコ人の男性が手を招き猫のようにして私達を呼び寄せていたのです。モロッコにはラクダに乗る体験ツアーが至る所にあり、客を寄せようと迫ってくる人がいます。しかし日本語でギャクを飛ばして客を呼び寄せるとは驚きましたね。それくらい日本人観光客がモロッコへ旅していると言うこと？確かに私がモロッコを旅した時に出会った東洋人は全員日本人でした。モロッコのようなエギゾチックな国を訪れたいという冒険心のある日本人は結構多いのですね。

そしてラクダは確かに楽です！私達はマラケシュから東に位置するメルズーガ大砂丘をラクダに乗って入り、テントが建てられているキャンプで一泊しました。ラクダに初めて乗った時はバランスがとれるまで少し時間はかかりましたが、そのうちラクダさんの歩くリズムに合わせるようになり、それから楽しくなりました。（次の日は背中が少し筋肉痛になりましたけどね）ラクダの背中にはサドルの上にしっかりとしたブランケットがかけられていたので長い間乗っていてもお尻が痛くなく、ガイドさんもちゃんと付いていたので安心でした。そしてラクダを間近で見ると、本当にまつ毛は長くカールしているのです。砂が目に入りにくくするためにとちゃんとそれには意味があるのですが、流し目を使う様な表情にちょっとドキッとしましたね。そして足裏が広いため砂丘を歩いても足が砂に埋まらない、砂丘の砂嵐にも絶えられるように体の下にしっかり保護するよう脚を曲げられる体作り、自然と共に生きる素晴らしい動物だなと、お世話になりながら思いました。砂丘からのサンセットはまた海で見るのと違い、空は暖かいオレンジや深い赤のグラデーションに染まり、光りと影のコントラストで砂丘はキャラメル色のホィップ・クリームの様に滑らかに映るのです。そして日が沈むと地平線から北極星が現れ、後に空いっぱいの星がキラキラと輝き始める。流れ星のショーも楽しめる砂丘の幻想的な世界、これは一度体験してほしいです。

モロッコには砂丘もあれば美しい海もあります。マラケシュから車で約3時間にある大西洋に面した港町エッサウィラ。世界遺産のメディナもマラケシュのピンクとは違って青と白がメイン、港町に似合う色使いです。風が常に吹く北アフリカ、ここもウィンドサーフィンのメッカとしても人気で、リゾート地としても注目されています。港町なので新鮮なシーフードが楽しむことも出来ます。エッサウィラには私達も勧めてもらったリアド・ホテルがあります。メディナの中にある「ヴィラ・マロック」はリアド・ホテルとして歴史があり高く評価されています。アルコーブに隠れる様にルームがあり、デザインや家具、色が異なりとてもチャーミングです。スパ感覚で楽しめるおしゃれなハマムもありブレックファーストは港を一望出来るルーフ・ガーデンで頂くのです。モロッコを舞台にした小説に出てくる様なロマンチックなホテル。私が滞在した時はディナーをゲスト分用意するルールがあり、毎晩のディナー・メニューを朝一番にフロントに伝えないと行けなく、後でメニューを変える事が出来ない厳しい所もありましたが、それも親密にアテンドしてくれる証だったのかもしれません。ここで使われている器はモロッコの伝統的な模様が施されとても素敵でした。料理がさらに美味しく感じました。

モロッコの伝統的な模様は街中で売られている絨毯で見る事が出来ます。絨毯の折り方、染め方、模様の意味はアラブ人やベルベル人によって違います。モロッコの絨毯文化は実に豊かでお値段も様々です。お店に入るとあっと言う間に絨毯をいろいろ並べてくれる上、お決まりのミント・ティーも出してくれます。すこし強めに売りつけてくるお店もあるのでプレッシャーを感じてしまうこともありますが、私は出来るだけ我慢をして、いろいろ見て回ってからお店の方と交渉しました。交渉をするのは当たり前、フレンドリーに接しながら交渉するのがベスト。そして案としてEnsemble Artisanalなど値段がフィックスされているお店を覗いてみて絨毯の相場やクオリティーを参考にするのも良いと思います。

私は結局３枚購入してしまいました。買い過ぎ？でもモロッコ絨毯は一生ものです。今日も絨毯の上に足を滑らせモロッコの旅を思い出しています。

As I walked the streets of Marrakech, on several occasions I heard men calling me over to take a camel ride. It's not uncommon since camels are one of the attractions of the country but in my case, they called me over in Japanese! "Rakuda-wa rakuda" was the phrase, which translates to something like "Camels are fun". I was happily surprised that Japanese had come this far, and a cute rhyme at that! But it also made me think about how many Japanese people are attracted to exotic countries like Morocco. Interesting enough, the only Asian people I ran into while I traveled through Morocco were Japanese. I also have to agree that camels are fun! It was on top of my must-do-while-in-Morocco list and still recall how excited I was riding into the dunes of Merzouga on camel-back. I noticed that camels, like the cartoons, have dreamy eyes. I'm aware that the reason they have curly eyelashes is to help keep sand out of their eyes but I was still mesmerized by this creature's flirtatious expression. What's more, camel feet are flat and wide, a little cushioned like an elephant so their legs wont sink into the sand. Also, they tuck their long legs snug under their body to keep them safe and warm during the cold windy nights in the desert, truly an amazing animal.

Merzouga, a small village east of Morocco and fairly close to the Algerian border is known for Erg Chebbi, the grand dunes that shine orange and pink during daytime and turn into rippled shades of caramel during sunset. There are tours that provide food and shelter at camps set up inside the dunes so we headed out into the dunes late afternoon to catch the sunset and as the Northern star shined bright to lead the starlight spectacle, we spend the evening under the desert stars. It was intense!

There are dunes and there are beautiful seaside coasts in Morocco. We spend several days in Essaouria, west of Marrakech along the powerful Atlantic Ocean. A resort town with a World Heritage medina, it's also known for strong winds and so has become a popular destination for windsurfers from around the world. There are port side stalls that sell fresh seafood, a great treat after days of eating Tajine. Inside the medina, where we stayed, is the Villa Maroc. One of the first Riad Hotels in the country, it is still known to be one of the finest. There is a special charm to this hotel with rooms hidden in small alcoves and each room designed differently with delicately refined taste. There is a spa and hamam inside the hotel and breakfast is served on the roof top garden with an broad view of Essaouira. It is an enchanting hotel though I found having to choose the dinner menu in the morning and no changing your mind last minute a little strict.Nonetheless, the food was delicious and the beautiful Moroccan style plates made each dish even more appetizing.

From plates to lampshades, I think everything designed Moroccan style is beautiful. Of course if you travel through Morocco, there is no way you can avoid a carpet shop - 99% you will end up in one. There are countless places to shop for carpets and most welcome you to come in to at east have a cup (or two) of mint tea while they cheerfully lay out a myriad of carpets. Some shops can be overpowering and the pressure to buy a carpet can be straining but try to worry. Though I'm quite a softy, I tried hard to stay firm on choosing the carpet I liked the most and took my time looking at carpets through my trip. I like to think I bargained well but the truth is, the carpet culture is so vast and sophisticated in Morocco that with the exception of a few, it's hard to know off hand what good quality and price is for carpets in Morocco. It really takes time. One suggestion may be to get an idea of price and design at stores such as Ensemble Artisanal who have fixed prices for carpets and other arts and crafts. Just to get an idea what carpets go for.

If it's too hard to get an idea, just trust your instincts.
Best to bargain for the carpet (or in my case carpets) you like the most...as each carpet tells a story, It is also an embroidery of memories. I too often think of the trip to Morocco when I graze my feet across my favorite carpet.

Wonders of Morocco

先日モロッコに住む友人から電話がありました。モロッコに住む友人がいるなんて、ちょっと自慢したくなりますよね。彼はイギリス出身で、彼が日本で働いていた頃に知り合ったのですが、いつかモロッコに家を建てたいと言う夢を実現するために去年フェズに渡りました。なんて冒険心の強い人！夢を信じて先の見えない道を歩む彼を、私はとても尊敬しています。やっとフェズ生活も落ち着いて念願のお家もただいまリフォーム中とか。大変そうだけど、元気に頑張っているそうです。しかし彼がモロッコに惹かれる理由ってなんなのか？それは、私も訪れてみて実感しました。

モロッコに行ったのは2005年の9月末でした。日の出から日没まで断食が続く「ラマダン」の始まる数週間前の頃でした。その年はまだスペインに住んでいたので、モロッコに行くのは簡単でした。スペインの真下に位置するモロッコまでのフライトは約2時間だし、北欧からスペイン経由でフェリーに乗ってモロッコに入る観光客だっています。私は楽に飛行機に乗ってスペイン人の女友達と一緒に、マドリードからモロッコのマラケシュまで行きました。フライト時間が2時間で時差もちょうど2時間なので、マドリードから行くと出発と到着時間が同じになるのです。まるでワープした感覚でした。

女性2人の旅だったため、ガイドさんが付いてくれる旅を事前にツアー会社にお願いしたので、安心出来た上に短期間でいろんな事を体験することが出来ました。そしてマラケシュの空港で迎えてくれたガイドのオマールさんとドライバーのアメッドさんからはモロッコ文化について沢山教えていただきました。

カラッとした空気に土の香りがほのかにするマラケシュ。街は全体的にピンクで、昔ながらの頑丈な壁で出来た建物が印象的でした。民族衣装のジラバを着た男性や美しいスカーフを頭に巻いた女性達の姿、そして街のどこにいても見えるモスク、そしてそのモスクから流れてくる歌など、イスラム教徒の国を訪れるのは初めてだったので全てに圧倒されました。そしてこの神秘的な地を一瞬にして好きになりました。

旧市街のメジナの中にはリアドを改築したデザイン・ホテルが沢山あります。リアドとはモロッコの伝統的な邸宅の事で、色鮮やかなタイルが敷き詰められた中庭が特徴です。今はそんなリアドの多くは個人のオーナーによってデザイン・ホテルとして改築され人気を集めています。伝統的な装飾をそのままに、現代のデザインが加わった素晴らしい雰囲気のリアド・ホテル。豪華ホテルに泊まるのも良いですが、モロッコ文化を体験するならリアド・ホテルをおススメします。

私達が案内されたのはスイス系フランス人のカップルが経営する「リアド・エル・グラブリ」と言う家庭的でチャーミングなリアド・ホテル。部屋数は少なく、各部屋もシンプルですがモロッコ・ランプやお洒落な小物のセンスが映えています。とても家庭的でスタッフもフレンドリーでした。ここは「ジャマ・エル・フナ広場」や美術館、観光客も入れる宮廷にも近いのでアクセスも便利です。また料理も美味しく、朝はテラスでいただくブレックファーストにモロッコ流フラット・ブレッド、クロワッサンにヨーグルトとカフェ・オ・レ（フランス風です）。そして夜はタジン鍋で煮込んだチキンやラムをクスクスと合わせていただくモロッコ料理を用意してくれました。

メジナを歩くと分かりますが、マラケシュは全体的に淡いピンクに包まれた街なのです。淡いピンクの分厚い壁が何処までも続き、所々に小さなドアがあり、これは人の家なのか、ホテルやレストランなのか見極めることは難しいです。でもドアに飾られる魔除けの「ファティマの手」はとても印象的です。

マラケシュを語るにはジャマ・エル・フナ広場を欠かす事は出来ません。多くの出店が密集する迷路のようなスーク、蛇使いや歌を披露する大道芸人のパフォーマンスの姿や、屋台で賑わう広場。夜になるとさらに活気に溢れ、屋台でエスカルゴを立ち食いする人から大道芸人を囲む観光客など、お祭りのような盛り上がりです。モスクから流れるお祈りを知らせる歌をバックに、広場を囲むお洒落なレストランでこの光景を観ていたら、日本がとても遠く感じました。

モロッコを愛する欧米の芸術家も数多くいます。「シェルタリング・スカイ」の著者ポール・ボウルスも長年モロッコに住んでいたそうです。そして昨年亡くなったファッション・デザイナーのイブ・サン・ローランもマラケシュに惹かれ、インスピレーションを得るためによく訪れたそうです。彼が80年から所有した「マジョレル庭園」には（元の所有者）画家のジャック・マジョレルと、サン・ローランのテイストが活かされた植物園とミュージアムがあり、観光客も入ることが出来ます。イスラムとヨーロピアンの洗練された美しいミックスの庭園、色使いがとても印象的です。

またモロッコの砂丘から人々、さらに雑貨や家具、そして至る所に売られている手作りカーペットも素晴らしいです。色と模様も様々でどれを選べば良いのか、上手く値段の交渉するのもチャレンジです。そのあたりも次回話したいと思います。

Just the other day, I spoke to my good friend who moved to Morocco last year. It sounds kind of cool to say I have a friend who lives in such an exotic country, doesn't it? Well I do and he is wonderful friend with an adventurous heart that I admire greatly. He is originally from England but has lived in many countries including Japan, where we met. As long as I have known him, he's had a dream of moving to Morocco and building a house there. He finally got his plan going and literally packed up his 4-wheel drive and moved to Fez. It was great to hear his voice and it seems he's finally getting work done on that dream house. I'm sure there are obstacles that come his way in his challenge and I miss him in Tokyo but I also know he's living his dream and I applaud him for that. So what attracts him to Morocco? One may wonder. I also thought the same until I made a trip there and discovered the magic and beauty of the North African country.

I visited Morocco with a girl friend of mine in 2005. It was the end of September, a few weeks before the Islamic month of Ramadan. I was living in Spain at the time, so the trip to Morocco was fairly easy. Many Spaniards take a holiday in Morocco and some drive there by riding the ferry from the southern town of Tarifa. We decided to take a much more comfortable route by flying from Madrid to Marrakech and funny enough, the flight is only two hours and the time difference is also 2 hours so we basically departed and arrived at the same time. It was like being beamed to Morocco on the Star Trek Enterprise! Well kind of... We did lose two hours when flying back to Madrid but who likes to talk about the flight home.

Since we were two girls on a journey, we relied on a travel agency to design an itinerary best suited for us. It turned out be a great one with Omar, our guide and Ahmed, our designated driver to take us to all the places we wished to go. They informed us about Moroccan culture, traditions, the food and we had some great laughs together.

I remember arriving in Marrakech and feeling the cool dry air and smelling it's earthy aroma. The whole city is colored in a unified earthy pink color and there is an unforgettable mysticism lingering among the old structures. The sight of men in traditional djellabas, women with colorful scarves around their heads and small children tugging at my shirt while hearing the call for prayer from the Mosque, all were so overwhelming yet so profoundly interesting. It was so much more than I ever imagined and I was drawn to Morocco immediately.

We stayed in a Riad hotel inside the Medina, the old city. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an open air court yard. Many are now owned privately and have been refurbished into boutique hotels. The mix of traditional Moroccan and modern design is just exquisite! Staying at a luxurious hotel is wonderful but staying in a Riad hotel is, in my opinion, one of the nicest ways to experience Moroccan culture. Prices are nicer too.

We were recommended to Riad El Grably owned by a Swiss French family, located close to Djemaa el Fna. There are only a few rooms and are quite simple but the details in the furniture and decorations are very delicate and charming. The staff are very kind and I remember the food was delicious. Breakfast delivered to the terrace consisted of Moroccan flat bread, croissants, yoghurt and café au lait and dinner was Chicken or Lamb Tajine with cous cous. Yumm.

Walking out and around the hotel through the Medina, I recall being amazed at how pink all the structures were and how hidden the lives were behind those sturdy walls. Every few meters there were small discreet doors with a golden Hand of Fatima as a door knocker... so charming.

Life in the Medina seemed very quite until we walked out to Djemaa el Fna. The maze like Souk market and the endless stalls, snake charmers and donkeys and performers, it is life in motion here. During the day it is occupied by orange juice stalls and at night the square turns more vibrant with locals and tourists milling around the food stalls, Arb and Berber storytellers and all sorts of entertainers. I took a back seat watching the crowd from a nearby restaurant listening to the mesmerizing call for prayer from the Mosque. It felt a world away from my life in Tokyo.

There are artists who have fallen in love with Morocco. Paul Bowen for example, the author of The Sheltering Sky. I recall seeing a few tourists with the book in their hand. Also the late Yves Saint Laurent and his partner spent much time in Marrakech and it's well known that Morocco had great influence to many of his creations. They bought and restored the famous Marjorelle Garden in the 80's and it is still one of the popular destinations of Marrakech. The Islamic European décor is impressive, definitely worth a visit.

There's so much more to write about Morocco! The wonderful people, the dunes, the hamams, the beautiful lamps, the furniture and the of course the carpets! Which carpet to choose, how to choose and how to work on bargaining for a good price...ok, let me come back next time for more on Morocco.
