|
旅行のプランを企画するのはバカンスの楽しみの一つだと思います。行き先を決め、フライトを予約して好きなホテルを探す作業って意外と楽しかったりします。唯一面倒かな？と思うのは荷造りです。旅行は好きで、
旅には慣れているとは言え、スーツケースを多めに詰めてしまう私。"これは本当に必要なのか？"、 "必要だったら旅先で手に入るか"など自分と相談しながら最低限の物を入れている、つもりだけど、どうも詰め
過ぎてしまう。まだまだ訓練中です。実は荷造りする度に思い出す映画があるのです。もう20年前の作品ですが、80年代に公開された映画「偶然の旅行者」。アン・タイラーの小説を映画化したウィリアム・ハートと
ジーナ・デイビスが共演した話題作。 観た事あります？（まだと言う方はおススメです！）
息子を亡くし、そのショックから立ち直れない旅行ガイドブックのライターと"今を生きる"タイプなちょっと変わったドッグ・トレイナーの女性、まったく正反対な人生観を持つ男女の恋愛ストーリー。 2人がパリで会うシー
ンがあるのですが、彼の旅は荷物が軽い方が良いと言う考えに対し、彼女はパンパンで今にもはち切れそうなスーツケースを苦しそうに持ちながら"この荷物は旅をした証よ"との事を言い、素敵な笑顔を見せるのです
。彼女の人生観って素敵だなと思い、今でもその映画のシーンは印象強く残っています。荷造りする時にはちょっとクスッと一人で笑いながら思い出してしまう時もあります。
確かに映画の彼女のように詰め過ぎには注意したいところ。でも必ず持って行きたいものは旅をしているうちに分かってきますよね。自分の経験、そして私がナビゲートするラジオ番組に出演していただいた様々な著名
人にも教わった「旅の必需品」をいくつか紹介します。
まず足のむくみに効果がある「ツボ刺激ボール」。長い時間を機内で過ごしていると足のむくみが気になります。そんなむくみの解消を助けるこのボール。ボールが転がって行かないようヒモの部分を足首に巻き、ボールの
上に足を乗せコロコロさせるのです。痛いけど気もち良い、イタキモな感じです。愛用しているこのボールは昨年那覇マラソンに参加した時、リフレクソロジー・クリニック「ドクタ
ー・フット」に頂いたものです。マラソン後も時々お家でコロコロしていますし、旅行の時はバッグに必ず入れています。ゴルフボールを使っても良いです。これは番組にゲスト出演していただいた美月あきこさんが教えてくれました。

また乾燥には「化粧水パック」。美月さんはコットンに好きなお化粧水を含ませてタッパーに入れる手作りのパックを進めてくれました。私のように市販の物でも大丈夫な方は空港でもポケット・サイズのコットンパフ化粧
水が売られています。機内は乾燥しているので顔にお水を付けたくなるかもしれませんが、これは逆効果なのです。肌がさらに乾燥してしまうので、気をつけたいものです。化粧水スプレーもありますが、機内には液体
の持ち込みが制限されているのでコットンパフのパックの方が持ち込みやすいし、ボトルが必要ないので軽いです。

唇の乾燥も気になります。リップ・バームは普段も持ち歩いている私は必ず旅するとき持って行きます。でも機内のアメニティーにも含まれているので忘れてもこれは安心かな？

その他、ショールや大きめのスカーフを持って行くのもグッドです。暖かい場所に行くにしてもどんな気候に出会うか分かりません。旅先でドレスアップした時にもショールは良いアクセントになる上、コートやジャケットを持っ
て行くよりずっと軽い、何かと重宝すると思います。

最後に「エキストラ・バック」もおススメです。旅先で何かと買ってしまう私。さきほど話した映画の主人公のように旅先で手にした物は"旅した証"であり、お土産も含めいろいろと思い出の品を持って帰ってくる癖がある
のです。最近は我慢するよう努力はしていますが、もう二度とこの場所に戻らないかもと思うとついつい買ってしまう。それが楽しかったりするんですけどね～。そんな時の為にも余分にバックを持って行きます。旅先でバッ
クを購入すると意外と高く付く時もあるし、せっかく旅の時間、バックを探す時間に使いたくないものです。
今度はお土産を探すコツなどの話をしたいですね。どうぞお楽しみに！
Planning a holiday is always a lot of fun. Deciding where to go, who to go with, booking flights and
reserving a hotel, may be a hassle to some but I enjoy the planning and making sure that I will have a
perfect holiday. The only thing I am not a big fan of, or rather, not very good at is packing. I must
say I have been getting better at packing by always asking myself "Do I really need this?" or "Will I
wear this?" or "If I need it, couldn’t I get it over there?" so that I don’t fill my suitcase with
unnecessary items. However, it seems I still have a lot to learn about discipline when my suitcase is
already close to the baggage weight limit when checking in. Hence, I call myself "The Overpacker".
When I go through my session of not trying to over stuff my luggage, I often remember a scene from the
80's film "The Accidental Tourist" starring William Hurt and Geena Davis. It's a wonderful movie
adapted from a novel of the same title about a travel writer trying to get over the loss of his young
son and his attraction to an odd outgoing dog trainer.
The scenes are I admit, a little blurry since I saw the film last (like 20 years ago?) but I remember
a scene when they meet in Paris. He, being a travel writer believes that traveling light is the way to
go, no hassles, no fuss (a reflection of his life perhaps?) and she, who stuffs her multiple bags with
all sorts of stuff, reacts by saying something like “How will you know you’ve traveled?” with a
glimmering smile to go with. I remember loving the character’s outlook on life and it still makes me
smile remembering the scene.
The Overpacker does believe traveling light is a good thing but for some odd reason end up with a
heavy suitcase... I’m working on it. I have though, over the years of traveling, have picked up a few
things on what to leave behind and what to bring. I’ll share some of the “must brings” here and tips
I’ve been given from a guest on my show at J-wave.
To start, I try not to forget the "Shiatsu Ball". However comfortable the seats, a long flight can be
stressful on the body. I tend to do a lot of stretching while on the plane and also find using the
Shiatsu Ball very useful. It is easy to use by wrapping the strap on the ankle and then rolling the
foot over the wooden ball to stimulate the pressure points on the back of the foot. The strap is there
so to keep the ball from rolling away. It stimulates circulation and helps reduce swelling. The ball I
use was given to me by the reflexology clinic 「Dr. Foot」 when I entered the
Naha Marathon in Okinawa. I use it every so often at home and throw it in my bag before going on long
flights. There is also the option of using a golf ball. This was recommended to me from Akiko Mizuki who was a guest on my show last year.

Another useful item is "Toner packs" to help replenish dry skin while on the plane. It might be easier
to splash water on your face but here's a tip: water only makes the skin drier! Water is for drinking
(lots of it) and not to be splashed on the face while on the plane. Akiko Mizuki also recommends
making your own toner packs by soaking cotton pads with your favorite toner and carrying them in a
plastic container. There are also individually packed toner cotton puffs can be found at pharmacies
and the airport too. Another option is to carry toners in a plastic bottle but with the restrictions
of carrying liquid on the plane these days, the cotton puffs may be a better idea. They're lighter
too.

Dry lips can be one of the most annoying things on this planet. Licking them also makes them red,
chapped and itchy. I always make sure to carry lip balm but I rest assure that American Airlines
provide lip balm in the amenities kit. Big kiss to that!

Other items on my "must bring" list would be a shawl and an extra bag. I found that a shawl or a large
scarf can come in very handy for those cool nights and it goes well with any type of fashion style.
It's also better to pack a shawl then a heavier jacket. Yes, the Overpacker has learned something. The
extra bag is of course for the extra things we tend to pick up while on a holiday. It's better to
bring one rather than to spend extra money and time on finding one while you can be spending it on a
lovely resort soaking up the scene with a sexy cocktail in your hand.

Those are some of the things I bring on my holiday... the other stuff? I don't know how they get into
my suitcase :-)

Travel |

旅先での食事はとても大事だと思います。リゾートで身体を癒す旅、ショッピング三昧の旅、または新しい文化に触れる旅など、旅行をする目的は様々ですが、やはりどこに行くにしても美味しいものを口にしたい、で
すよね。私は旅先の食事情に関してちょっとこだわる方で、今まで旅した場所の事を思い出すと、良い食事をした場所の方が断然印象に残っています。 別に舌が肥えている訳ではなくそれほどのグルメでもありませ
ん。
美味しい食事とは自分の好みに合ったものだけではなく、身体と心に残るようなものだと思うのです。よく国の歴史や民族を語る上では食文化はかかせないと言いますが、旅をして新たな国を知るために、その地のお
料理も気にするようにしています。
食文化が盛んとして知られるイタリアやフランスも人気ですが、アジアでは日本を始め、香港やベトナムやタイもポイント高いと思います。タイ料理は日本でも大変人気で、私のまわりでもタイ料理教室に通う友人がい
ます。そう言えば、身近な話ですが、東京の代々木公園で開催される恒例「タイ・フェスティバル」では今年は朝から大勢の人が集まり、タイ料理店のブースも例年以上に力を入れていました。そんな人気のタイ料理
は中国の宮廷料理やカンボジア、ベトナムなど周辺のアジアの国の影響を受けて生まれたと言われています。香辛料を上手く使い、辛さと甘さを絶妙に合わせる料理が多いですね。それほど難しい料理と言う感じは
なく、作るのも意外と簡単。材料もお肉にシーフードからお野菜にフルーツと幅広く使っているのでヘルシーでメニューに飽きません。そしてどの料理もカラフルで見た目も素敵です。
数ある東京のタイ・レストランの中、いくつかの行きつけがあります。裏原宿にある「カフィア・ライム」はカジュアルな雰囲気の中で本格的なタイ料理を楽しむ事が出来
ます。おススメのメニューは「空芯菜のガーリックいため」や「パパイア・サラダ」そして「チキンとバジル炒め」。定番の「グリーン・カレー」の辛さも本格的ですので、辛さに弱い方は調整してくれるように頼んで下さいね。原宿
の人気店とあって特に週末は混んでいます。少々並ばないと入れないかも知れませんが、少し待つ価値あると思います。
最近友人の紹介されたお店で気に入っているのは六本木にあるちょっと隠れ家的な「バンコク」。クラブやバーが並ぶ六本木のメイン通りからちょっと入った所の２階にあ
るレストラン。看板も、ネーム同様、比較的シンプルなので通り過ごしてしまいそうですが、料理はお墨付き。メニューがとにかく豊富で特にここのサラダ類がおススメです。目が覚めるほどのピリ辛料理、カラフルな野菜
炒めやフルーツのデザートもなかなかです。

老舗のタイ宮廷料理なら西麻布の「ライス・テラス」へ行ってみて下さい。オープンして１８年、今でもひときわ目立つレストランとして人気を集めています。お店の前に
は象さんのオブジェが置いてあり、エレガントで開放感のあるインテリアはまるでタイのリゾートにいるような気分にさせてくれます。宮廷料理とあって普段のカジュアルなタイ料理とは違い、オードブルカナッペ、タルトなど品
良く工夫されたタイ料理が楽しめます。またお花のようにカービングされたお野菜などが料理に盛りつけられてとてもエレガントです。デートに是非！
さ、タイ料理を食べたくなりました？それともタイ王国に行きたくなりましたか？私も、行きたいです。
タイは数回に渡り旅していますが、最後にタイを訪れたのは2006年の冬。リゾートが美しいプーケットへ。肌に優しい空気に眩しい日差し、ローカルな人達の暖かいスマイルに歓迎され、着いた瞬間から肩の力が抜
けるほど気持ち良さを覚えています。

今回泊まったのはリゾート・ホテル「シェラトン・グランド・ラグーナ・プーケット」。大きなリゾート・ホテルなのでホリデーはここからそれほど離れなくでも十分に楽しめます。
ブレックファーストの後はビーチ・チェアとパラソルが用意されている砂浜で寝そべって、マッサージを受け極楽気分。昼過ぎ頃には象の子供が飼育係の人と水浴びするためビーチにやって来ます。都会人にとっては驚くよ
うなシーンですね。ビーチ沿いには数々の屋台やレストランもあり、夜はビーチを散歩しながら気に入ったレストランを選び、海の前で食事をする事も出来ます。

前々回にプーケットを訪れた時に泊まったホテルが「THE CHEDI」。各部屋はコテージ・スタイルになっているので、プライバシーが欲しいと言う方にはおススメです
。階段の多いホテルですが、プライベート・ビーチもあり、くつろげるリゾートです。

賑やかなナイトライフは嫌いではないですが、プーケットではゆっくりペースで行くのが好きなタイプ。ホテルから離れて食事やドリンクを楽しむならお洒落な「PHUKET
JOE'S DOWNSTAIRS」が良いと思います。海を眺める崖の上にたてられたレストラン&バー、白をベースにしたモダンな空間にゆったり座れるソファがあります。ヨーロピアンなテイストが生きる
場所です。タイ料理をいただくなら、きっとローカルの人に訪ねるのがベストですが、ちょっとゴージャスに行くのなら「BAAN RIM PA」を是非。海を眺めながら食
事が出来るオープン・エアのレストラン。プーケットで高い人気を誇る宮廷料理が楽しめます。一生忘れない思い出を作りたい様な、素晴らしいセッティングの場所です。

旅をして食べる。食べて旅をする。私のトラベルの法則です。
When I was a little girl in elementary school, I remember watching a girl next to me eating her school
lunch dessert of Apple crumble. It could have been called "mangled" Apple crumble or just simply
"Crumbled" as it gave a poor example of what a real Apple crumble should have looked. Ah yes, those
good ole school lunches! I watched in praise as the brave girl took her plastic spoon and scooped a
bite of the unappealing gob. Then suddenly, a girl across the table mockingly said "You are what you
eat" I remember thinking how cruel but funny that sounded and let out a little chuckle. (Sorry brave
apple crumble girl!) It was the moment I learned sarcasm and remember the day pretty well. All sarcasm
aside, the girl was right. It's true, we are what we eat and it's
important to not just eat well but to eat good food, yummy food! I admit, I don't always eat well and
I am no gourmet but I believe eating delicious foods is equivalent to eating well so I make an effort
to search for something that satisfies my palette and my body.
I also believe it goes the same when we travel. Gotta have good food when I travel, it's a big part of
the holiday! The relationship between food and culture is so intriguing and I'm always impressed with
countries that embrace food in their culture.
For instance, France and Italy are well known for their culinary delights and cities such as my home
Tokyo or Hong Kong are high on the list for great cuisine. I also love all the food that comes from
Thailand. (I'm sure many will agree) I'm often seen in Thai restaurants in Tokyo too. The Thai
Festival held in Yoyogi Park attracts more and more foodies each year and participating restaurants
seem to gain more popularity. Influenced by China and cuisines from neighboring countries, Thai
cuisine is known for it's balance of hot & spicy, sour, sweet using fresh herbs and colorful
ingredients of vegetables, fruits, seafood and meat. There are a wide variety of dishes and all are
relatively easy to cook. Thai cuisine looks good, is good and quite healthy. I love it!
In Tokyo, I frequent the popular Thai restaurant Kaffir Lime in the back
streets of Harajuku. A very casual restaurant with basic good Thai food ranging from Gai pad grapao,
(minced chicken with garlic, chilies and basil) to Papaya salad and garlic sautéed morning
glory. The chili in the green curry can sometimes put your mouth on fire but I always go back for
more. If you ask the friendly staff, they will adjust the spices to your level. Most weekends the
restaurant is full so a you many have to line up but it's worth the wait.
Recently, a Thai food-lover-friend of mine introduced me to Bangkok in
Roppongi. An intimate restaurant in the quiet area behind all the bustling bars and nightclubs, the
sign outside is pretty subtle so it's easy to pass right by the entrance. Once inside, you really feel
like you are in Bangkok with the locals. There is so much on the menu it's hard to choose but I
recommend the colorful spicy salads and make sure to leave enough room for fruity desserts.

The Thai restaurant in Nishi Azabu Rice Terrace has been a favorite among
Tokyo food lovers for nearly 18 years. The stylish interior gives a feel of a relaxed Thai villa and
the food has an authentic twist of Thai French flare. The carved vegetables add a beautiful touch to
each dish and there's a wide selection of wine to choose from.
OK, now I am in the mood to get me some Thai food... better yet, start making plans for my next trip
to Thailand!
I've traveled to Thailand several times and hope to visit again soon. I will never be tired of the
gentle breeze of the sea, glimmering sunshine, the warm smiles of the people, and of course the food.

The last time was a visit to Phuket several years ago. I stayed at the Sheraton
Grande Lagune Phuket, a resort so grand you never need to leave the hotel to enjoy the holiday.
After a lovely breakfast at the lounge or terrace of your choice, head to the pool or the beach and
lay under the parasols sipping on your favorite cocktail. Take a dip in the ocean or just head over to
the massage area for a relieving Thai massage. Paradise! Tame
elephants sometimes pay a visit to take a cool dip in the ocean too. For a little adventure, there are
beach side restaurants with fresh lobsters and seafood served to your beachside table.

Another hotel I recommend is The Chedi. Villas make up this resort, giving it
a more intimate and private atmosphere. There are lots of stairs so
best to book a villa by the beach but this hotel is truly lovely.

Great restaurants are many in Phuket and the probably the best thing to do would be to ask a local or
the concierge. One of my favorites is Phuket's Joe
Downstairs. A restaurant bar lounge set perfectly overlooking the sea, the white based interior
and plush sofas add a beautiful touch. To go all out and enjoy top notch Thai
cuisine, head to the famous Baan Rim Pa. Also set on a cliff overlooking the
ocean, this restaurant is known for it's authentic food and exquisite
atmosphere.

Food for travel or travel for food? Not sure which comes first but I am what I eat and I wouldn't mind
all turning Thai.

| Ibiza - Sunset on the Mediterranean | |
今回は都会を脱出する気分でアイランドへご案内です。ゴールデン・ウィークが終わったばかりですが、ホリデー・モードが抜けない方にも、これから旅行を考えている方も是非参考にして下さいね。
小さい頃ニューヨーク州のロング・アイランドで育った私、ビーチの近くに住んでいたので夏は毎日のように海で泳ぎ、ビーチで遊んでいました。学生の頃の夏休みが懐かしいです。今ではすっかり都会人となっていますが、
時々海が私を呼んでいる気がして、海のそばに行きたくなります。海風を感じながらビーチを素足で歩き、気が向いたら海に駆け込み波の中へダイブする。そして青、紫、赤やオレンジのグラデーションで空を染める夕
日が水平線に沈むのを見ながら過ごす。幸せな時間です。そろそろ海が私を呼んでいるのかな？
それもあって長めのオフが取れるときは都会＆ビーチ両方楽しむために、旅行プランを工夫して目的地を一つ以上にするようにしています。例えばロスに行くならハワイ経由で帰国する。又はヨーロッパにいるなら何処
に行くにもフライト時間は比較的短いので、街と海に行くのにも簡単にスケジュールとフライトをアレンジ出来ます。私はスペインに行く時は必ずマドリードとバルセロナ、そしてバルセロナからイビザ島に行くようにしています
。イビザ島はバルセロナから約４０分のフライトなので、行かない方がもったいないかも知れませんね。
緩やかな地中海の浮かぶ人気の島、イビザ島。特に８０年代から９０年代は若者向けのパーティー・アイランドとして有名でした。今でも７月から８月のハイ・シーズン中はビーチもナイトライフも賑わっていますが、時期や
島の場所によってリラックスして過ごす事も出来ます。
伝説の「カフェ・デル・マー」シリーズをはじめ、世界的にヒットしたチルアウト系ミュージックを世に送り出した事でも有名なイビザ島は、スペインの情熱にヨーロッパの洗練
されたスタイルが融合した、まさに楽園。数時間で一周出来るほど小さな島ですが、エリアによって全く違う雰囲気を醸し出しています。西側のサン・アントニオにはクラブやバーが多く、夏の期間はイギリスをはじめヨー
ロッパの若者が多く集まります。
東側の旧市街は、スペイン本土の観光客の間でも人気で、歴史漂う石畳の小道や要塞が形そのまま残されているお洒落なエリアです。北方面に行くとファームハウスを改装したプチ・ホテルやヒッピー・マーケットもあり
、ペースがゆったりとしています。ビーチも小さいのからホテルに面した整備された大きいのまで、数多くあります。行き当たりばったり感覚でビーチ探しの冒険に出るのも楽しいし、ローカルの人やホテルのコンシェルジュに
薦めてもらうのもグッドです。そしてイビザ島で見
逃せないのがサンセット。サン・アントニオにある名カフェ「カフェ・デル・マー」には DJが選曲した音楽を聴きながら美しいサンセットを見るために 毎日夕方には大勢が集まります。カフェの前の海辺ではジャグラーやダ
ンサーなどがパフォーマンスを披露し、夜中までパーティーは続きます。世界一美しい夕日と評判のイビザ・サンセットはカフェからだけでなく見る事が出来ます。ヒッピー系の人達がボンゴの演奏をする、北側にあるベニラ
スのビーチも人気で、カジュアルな海の家でドリンクを頂きながらサンセットを待つのもおススメです。

ラグジュアリー＆スタイルを大事にするホテルや、レンタル出来るヴィラもこの島には沢山あります。私のお気に入りは島の北方面にあるプチ・ホテル「カン・プラネルス」。
ファームハウスをお洒落に改装したこのホテルはベーシックながらアット・ホームな雰囲気があり、まるで誰かのお家に招かれたような、スタッフの気の遣い方とフレンドリーさに驚きました。ビーチからは少し遠い方ですが、
自然に囲まれた静かな場所です。自転車をレンタルして、ゆっくりエリアを冒険するのも気持ち良いです。

イビザ島のビーチの多くは隠れた入り江にあるのでアクセスが便利なものと、そうでないのがあります。アクセスが便利な大きなホテルに面したビーチはやはり観光客に人気ですが、アクセスが不便なビーチの方が人は少
なくプライベーチ感が味わ
えます。ビーチ情報はネットをはじめ、現地でも沢山情報を得る事が出来るので、自分のスタイルにあったビーチを探す事が簡単に出来ます。私のお気に入りは南西にある「カラ・ドルト」。夏の間は人も増える人気の
ビーチですが、とてもリラックスできるビーチです。小さ過ぎず、大き過ぎずのサイズ で西側にあるので夕方までずっと日が射しています。ビーチ沿いのレストランも３つあり、新鮮のシーフードをはじめ手作りのパエリアもあ
ります。パエリアは最高に美味しいです！

美味しいレストランもこの島には沢山あります。旧市街の要塞付近にはテラス席を併設したロマンチックなレストランが数々あります。夏の間は客を寄せようとするお店の人も出ていますが、惑わされずまわりのお店のメ
ニューや雰囲気をチェックしてから決めた方が良いと思います。その他おススメは１６世紀の教会の中を改装したイタリアン・レストラン「サ・カペラ」も素敵です。歴史が
蘇る石畳のフロアに壁、高い天井、ソフトな照明がエレガントな空間を演出しています。星空の下で食事も出来るガーデン・テラスの席もあります。またイビザらしいラウンジ系のレストラン・バーをお探しなら「エル・アユーン」。中東アジアン風にデザインされた比較的大きなスペース。レストランに寿司バー、人気DJのチル・サウンズが流れるラウンジ・スペースもあります。
これからのシーズン、徐々に熱もあがるイビザ島。６月の中旬から大きなナイトクラブがオープンします。その前にクールでリラックスしたイビザ島を体験する事もおススメします。

I thought we extend the Golden Week holiday vibe and take a viral trip to the beach this time. Do you
ever get this strong urge to smell the ocean air, bury your feet into the
sand or jump into the waves?
I do often. It may have to do with growing up in New York's Long Island and being close to the ocean.
I remember those long summer holidays always at the beach with friends, taking
long walks and jumping into the surf when it got too hot. The smell and sound of the sea just felt so
right and though I have since spent most of life in the city, I still feel best
when I am close to the sea. There are moments I am convinced that the ocean beckons me to come, is
that just called wishful thinking?

Ibiza, well known as the "Party Island of the Mediterranean" has been a popular tourist destination
since the 70's. The island was well known especially in the 80's and 90's for its
summer club parties and DJ performances. The summer parties are still going strong but today, this
magical island has become known for more than just it's nightlife.
Also known for the legendary chill out music of Café Del Mar's DJ Jose
Padilla and the beautiful sunsets, Ibiza is a mix of Mediterranean
passion and refined European styles. A small island with distinctly unique areas; San Antonio on the
west side, known for it's eccentric nightlife and Ibiza Town, also known for
the decked out night clubs but has a slightly more relaxed atmosphere due to the Old Town
architecture.
The famous fortress and a cathedral on top of the hill add an authentic touch to this area. The north
is famous for the hippie market and beautiful villas that look over the island.
As it is an island, the beaches are found, well, everywhere. There are grand beaches with 5 star
hotels facing the sea and many little hidden cove beaches sprinkled throughout. Best
way to find the beach that fits your mood would be to ask the concierge but it's also fun to take an
adventure and beach hop, hit a few beaches while staying on the island.
Viewing sunsets has become a tradition in Ibiza. Café Del Mar in San Antonio attract locals and
tourists who want to enjoy great chill out music and beach side performances
while watching the huge sunset color the sky in gradations of blue, orange red and purple. There are
claps of appreciation heard through the caf? when the sun sets. I guess it makes
sense to express gratitude to nature's unexplainable beauties. Really, it's just... natural. Benirras
in the North is also a popular beach to view the sunset.

The atmosphere is more relaxed with hippies playing the bongos and random dancers flowing with the
beat. Wherever you are on the island, the sunset is not to be missed. Hotels range from 5 star hotels
small and large, Villas, budget hotels to Beach resorts, you name it. Staying around San Antonio,
Ibiza Town or beach side hotels are most popular
since it's close to everything. I, on the other hand, stayed at an intimate boutique hotel Can Planells near San Miguel. Formerly a farmhouse
transformed into a beautiful stylish Mediterranean hotel surrounded by lush greens and a wonderful
view of the island. It is a little far from the nightlife scene and the beaches
but it's a perfect place to relax and unwind.

Beaches, I recommend going on an adventure to find the one that fits your mood. I enjoyed lounging out
in Cala D'hort on the Southwest. Intimate but not too small, the beach is long
and the sand not so pebbly. The restaurants here serve delicious seafood and paella, a must try!

There are countless restaurants too. I was impressed with Ca Capella.
Originally began as a church during the 16th century, the restaurant is designed with high stone
ceilings and alcoves. Mysterious and romantic, the garden terrace is a prefect place to dine on clear
nights. For a more Ibiza cool atmosphere, start the evening at the
famous El Ayoun. Close to San Antonio, the Middle Eastern styled venue
consists of a restaurant, sushi bar and lounge space with house DJs playing
the signature Ibiza sounds.
The party season starts mid June to late August where the parties continue 24-7. If chilling is your
tune, try Ibiza early June or early September.

ロンドンと言えば何をイメージしますか？バッキンガム宮殿、エリザベス女王、テムズ川、ビッグベンにロンドン塔、フィッシュ
＆チップスや二階建てバスといろいろと浮かびます。イギリス人の人に同じことを聞くと、それに加えて"ロンドンは天気が悪
い"と答える人がいます。確かに雨が降ることが多く、降っていなくても曇りの天気が多いことで知られているロンドン。でも
そんなグレーな天気もこの街のキャラであり魅力であると思います。

ラジオのDJと言うお仕事を始める前から音楽に惹かれていた私。中高校生の頃はイギリス出身のアーティストの曲をよく
聴いていました。いや、今でも良く聴いています。考えてみれば、イギリスから輩出される音楽は世界に多大な影響を与え
ていますよね。ビートルスからローリング・ストーンズ、クィーンというレジェンドから、今のシーンをリードするコールドプレイやレ
ディオヘッド、オアシスまでクオリティーの高いアーティストが多くいます。またパンクやニュー・ウェーブと言ったロンドン生まれ
の音楽ムーブメントも現代音楽の歴史を語る上では外せないのでは。
どんより天気と関係あるのかについては何とも言えませんが、これほど素晴らしい音楽が生まれる街には何かがある！と
確信した私、ロンドンは学生の頃から行ってみたいと思ったデスティネーションでした。そう思いながらも初めてロンドンに行
ったのは５年前でした。４日間と比較的短い旅でしたが、真っ青な空が広がる晴れの天気に恵まれ、いつもグレーなロン
ドンというイメージとは全く違う印象を受けました。泊まったのはトラファルガー・スクエアーに近いヒルトン・ホテル「ザ・トラファルガー」。賑わうピカデリー・サーカスや歴史的なビッグ
ベン、ロンドン・アイ観覧車、そしてバッキンガム宮殿まで歩けるロケーションにあり、毎日ホテルから散歩をしながら観光し
たのを覚えています。

この時の天気の良さはローカルの人にとっても珍しかったらしく、セイント・ジェームス・パークではふさふさの芝生の上に寝そ
べる人も見かけました。ハイド・パークでは乗馬をする人達の姿もあり、この土地の広さを実感しました。そんな公園を始
め、赤レンガで作られた建物や有名建築物までロンドンにはロイヤル感が溢れている面があり、それはパブにも共通して
います。ロンドンには数えきれないほどパブがあり、人気や質も様々ですが、極めて目立つパブもあります。中には労働者
用と上流階級用、また男女別にパーティションや曇りガラスを使って空間を区切っていた１９世紀に建てられたパブも、内
装はそのままにオープンしているのもあります。

今はクラス別や男女別と言うのはもちろんありませんし多くの女性もパブで集まります。シェパーズ・パイやフィッシュ＆チップ
スなど伝統的なイギリス料理はやっぱりパブで頂くのがベスト！おススメはケンジントンにある「チャーチル・アームズ」。イギリス元首相ウィンストン・チャーチルを讃えたパブの伝統
的な外観には美しいお花が飾られ、中に入るとチャーチルさんの写真を始めイギリスのロイヤル・ファミリー、アメリカ歴代大
統領の写真が壁一面に飾られています。また天井には銅のお鍋や帽子箱に何故かしびん？もぶら下がっています（笑）こ

パブ体験も良いですが、スタイリッシュに行くならセイント・ジェームスにある「「ル・カプ
リース」。有名人も出没するという超有名店、モダンなインテリアに最高のサービスが受けられます。予約する必要
はありますが、バーエリアもあるのでカクテルを楽しむのもおススメです。
これからの季節は「サウスバンク」で過ごすのが良いと思います。「テート・ミュ
ージアム」でアートを楽しんだ後にテーム川付近のレストランやテラスで食事をするのはきっと気持ち良いと思います。世界
一のエンターテインメントを誇るロンドン、サウスバンクの情報を元に行動するととても便利だと思います。
そしてもちろん音楽やコンサートも欠かせないロンドン。ハイド・パークで開催される
音楽フェスティバル、今年も７月に予定されています。東京では想像出来ない街中の音フェス！一度は行ってみ
たいです。そして音楽好きには老舗レコード店「ラフ・トレード」をチャンスあれ
ばチェックしてほしいですね。７０年代にオープンした輸入レコード店、後にレーベルを立ち上げザ・スミスなどを世に送り出
したことでも有名です。今はノッティング・ヒルにある「ラフ・トレード・ウェスト」とリフォームされた「ラフ・トレード・イースト」店と
拡大されていますが、ビンテージものからこれから注目されそうな新しいアーティストまでもを発見出来ます。

ビンテージといえばポートベロー・ロード。骨董品やお土産ショップが並ぶ素敵なエリアです。ポートベローで一際目立つモ
ダン・レトロなブルーと白の外壁が特徴の「エレクトリック」。一部はシネマで、
一部はとても素敵なブラッセリーとなっています。お料理も美味しく、とにかくお洒落です。
これからが一番のシーズンとなるロンドン。てるてる坊主をもって行くと良いかもしれません。

What images do you have of London? Whether you've been there
or not, I'm sure there are many things that come to mind.
From Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth to fish & chips
and the double-decker bus, the city, though without a cool
nickname, has so many qualities that make it like no other.
Now if you ask the same to an English person, as I have to my
dear English mates, they most likely will add bad weather to
the list. No one will deny that London is not known for it’s
great weather but neither can we deny that the grumpy weather
is part of the extraordinary qualities to this great city.

Even before I became a radio DJ, I've loved listening to
music and often wondered why so many great artists come out
of England. From the legendary Beatles to The Rolling Stones,
Queen and the Sex Pistols and Coldplay or Radiohead who
define the popular music now, have influenced the history of
music and still are a part of today’s music. London is also
the birthplace to the Punk and New wave movements that have
affected us not just musically but socially and at times
politically. Ever since I was a teen in school, I wanted so
much to visit the place that gave life to so many of the
artist I grew to love and still cherish.
Ironically, as life would have it, the first time I visited
London was 5 years ago, how time flies. I’m not sure exactly
why, maybe it had something to do with what I had heard about
the weather? Funny enough, the 4 days I spent there I was
blessed with blue skies and ideal May weather which made a
wonderful first impression of the city. I stayed at The Trafalgar Hotel Hilton very close to
Trafalgar Square. The hotel is in a prime location easily
accessible to Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, the London Eye and
of course Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park.

I remember the people enojying the beautiful weather laying
out around St. James Park and around Hyde Park. Seeing people
on horseback riding through Hyde Park made me realize how
grand the park is. Walking through the parks and just looking
at the buildings and streets, I realized that there is
something "royal" about the city. I thought even pubs have a
certain royal-ness to them. I'm aware there are countless
pubs in the city and they can be very different in style and
quality but there are some that still embrace the traditions
and charm of old London. There are pubs that still keep the
partitions used during the Victorian era to separate the
classes and at some to separate the men and women.

Though the partitions holds no meaning today but you can
enjoy a good pint while walking into a bit of history. One of
the most impressive pubs is The Churchill
Arms in Kensington. One of the most traditional pubs in
London, it was created in honor to the former Prime Minister
Winston Churchill. There are numerous photos of Churchill,
the Royal Family and even former American Presidents
decorating the wall and interested memorabilia like hat boxes
and oddly enough, chamber pots! Traditional English meals and
Thai food is served here which are highly recommended.

The pub experience, I think, is a must while in London but
the stylish restaurants are also a must. I enjoyed lunch at
the famous Le Caprice in St. James.
One of the most posh restaurants in the city, famous to the
famous, they have a beautiful modern English menu and top
class service. Reservation is highly recommended.
To get a nice day out of London, it's always nice to head out
to the South Bank. After a full day at
the Tate Museum or the market, many people head around the
Thames for lunch or pre-dinner cocktails. There is so much
entertainment in London to discover but with the South Bank,
information is readily available and easy to get around.
If music is your thing, like myself, head out to Rough Trade records. Originally began as
an import record shop back in the 70's, Rough Trade has grown
to become one of the most reliable, hip record shop and label
of London. They are known to be the first ones to have signed
with The Smiths. Now they are more than one, Rough Trade East
and West in Notting Hill, both famous for the vintage stuff
as well as gathering info on new and up coming artists. It's
also outdoor music festival season soon. Every July is the big festival in Hyde Park. I can't
imagine a music festival this size would or could ever take
place in Tokyo but in London, it seems, they make the
impossible possible. The line-up can be found on-line.

If you are around Notting Hill and have a chance to head to
Portobello Road, make sure to check out Electric Brasserie. The Brasserie is
connected to the Electric Cinema and a private members club
upstairs. The food is delicious and the setting is chic
modern. There is also terrace seating. This is probably the
best time to head out to London.. but just in case, pack and
umbrella.

| The Vibrant Little
City |

香港には4度旅した事があります。1997年に中国に返還される前に一度訪れた事があり、返還された後は３回旅しま
した。日本が好景気に湧いたバブルの時代、香港は人気のデスティネーションの一つで、買い物旅行する女性達も多か
ったのを覚えています。懐かしい。そんなバブリーな時代も去り、そして返還されてから12年経ちます。返還直後は日本
人観光客が減少するニュースもあり、振り返ってみると香港は10数年間に渡り政治や金融不安に影響されてきた街。
でも小さな港シティーはいつもの輝きを失わずいつもキラキラと活気づいています。

最後に訪れたのは、約一年半前の秋でした。 夏のように暖かいけど湿度は低く、観光するには最高な季節でした。街
の看板が読めるほど低く滑走路にアプローチした昔の香港空港を思い出しながら、新しい空港に到着。 11年前に開
港している現代的にデザインされている空港はとてもスタイリッシュ。街へのアクセスも良く、電車では30分、バスやタクシ
ーだったら40分ほどで街の中心に行けて便利です。観光ルートも様々ですが、私は高層ビルの高さに見とれながら有名
なスター・フェリーを利用してカオルーンと香港島を行ったり来たりしながら観光するのが好きです。フェリーに揺られながら
街の風景を眺めて過ごすのは本当に気持ち良いです。フェリー乗り場からすぐ街に繰り出せるので、タクシーや地下鉄より
時間がかかってもフェリーの方が便利かもしれません。貨物船やクルーザーなどが通行し交通量が多いビクトリア湾に古い
ジャンク船も見えますが、このジャンク船の無料クルーズも出ているそうです。（＊香港観光局に問い合わせて下さい）

ショッピングには多くのガイド・ブックにも載っているセントラルやコーズウエイ・ベイ、西地区の小さなブティックも素敵です。
大きなモールでショッピングするのも良いですが私はローカルの雰囲気が漂う裏道のお店を覗くのが好きなので、迷子にな
るのを覚悟しながら冒険します。中にはセントラル付近にあるハリウッド・ロード沿いに並ぶ骨董品のお店やギャラリーもお
ススメですし、コーズウエイ・ベイにはお買い得価格でブランドのサンプルなどを手に入れる事が出来るお店も誕生していま
す。もちろん香港にいるなら中華を食べるのは当たり前？香港に星の数ほどレストランからどれを選べば良いのか悩む所
ですが、香港で働く女性に紹介してもらった「ZEN」はおススメです。セン
トラル地区にあるショッピング・モール「PACIFIC PLACE」の中にある中華レストラン。名前の通り禅をモチーフにし
たモダンなインテリア。メニューがとにかく豊富で美味しい！ここの飲茶のセレクションには驚きました。女性がとても入りやす
いお店で並ぶかも知れませんがランチ・タイムがベストです。

そしてビーチとマーケットが人気の「Stanley」まで足を運ぶのもおススメです。私が行った頃、ちょうどウォーターフロント
沿いの歩道が建設中でした。友人によるとウォーターフロントには新たにカフェやレストランもオープンし、日曜日と祭日はテ
ラス席も設けられるそうです。中でもアット・ホームなムードが漂う地中海料理レストラン「LUCY'S」が人気で、マーケットでショッピングした後にここで心も暖まりそうな
手作り料理でリラックスするのもグッド！

そして香港を一望出来るビクトリア・ピークは何度行っても飽きません。観光客に人気のピークは昼も夜も人が多いので、
平日に行くのがベストかもしれません。今ではピークには大きなモールもありお店やレストランも数ありますが、昔はたった一
店のカフェ「THE PEAK LOOKOUT」しかなかったそうです。19世
紀からあるこのレストラン、伝統的なインテリアとイギリス風のガーデンもあり、天気の良い日はガーデンでティータイムを過
ごすのも人気だそうです。香港独特のアジアン・ヨーロッパの伝統が感じられるスポットです。夜はネオンと共に街のムード
が一段と輝く香港。お洒落に行くなら「マンダリン・オリエンタル・ホテル香港
」の25階にある「M BAR」でカクテルと美しい夜景を是非！高
級感あふれる人気のバー、一人で行ってもスタッフが親切な対応をしてくれます。

セントラル地区の「IFC MALL」のウォーターフロントにあるイタリアン・レストラン＆バー「ISOLA」。白をベースにしたインテリア、上の階がバーとなっていて下の階はビ
クトリア湾に面したテラスもあるイタリアン・レストラン。ウォーターフロントの特等席のように、ここは素晴らしいロケーションに
あるレストランです。是非お洒落して行ってほしいです。

I've traveled to the Big Lychee several times, four times in
all. I had a chance to visit once before the Handover of 1997
and three times after. Though I was a student during the
decade of decadence in Japan, I remember the times when
flying to Hong Kong for a weekend shopping and eating spree
were considered a common thing to do during the Bubble
Economy 80's. Since then, times have changed and surely the
handover has had an effect on the city some way or another
but through my visits I've found Hong Kong to be one of the
most resilient cities of the world, always bursting with
energy.
The last time I hopped on a plane to Hong Kong was in the
autumn of 2007. Unlike what I am used to, autumn in Hong Kong
is warm, almost summer-warm with appreciatively low humidity.
Every time I fly to Hong Kong I can't stop myself from
feeling slightly nostalgic about how low the planes flew when
approaching the old Hong Kong airport. But that moment
disappears as soon as I land and lead smoothly through
baggage claims and customs of the new airport. Access to the
city center is also easily accessible and delivers you
straight into the city center. You've got to love an airport
that's business man/woman oriented, every thing to check-in
and transportation is so well planned.

All cities excite me but Hong Kong has a special vibrancy
about it. From the neon lights of the bustling streets to the
illuminated skyscrapers, and all the lovely chaos, there's an
energy that never stops flowing. I'm fortunate to have
friends who live in Hong Kong who invite me to some very
special places in the city. However, as I like to get a feel
of the city, I often wonder through the streets on my own and
also love to take the Star Ferry that runs between Kowloon
and Hong Kong Island. I enjoy watching the massive cargo
ships slowly make it's way in and out of Victoria Harbor,
wandering what they are carrying and the old Junk boats
cleverly making it's way through all the traffic. Taking the
metro or taxi may be an easier option to get around the city
but I always make sure to take the Star Ferry when I am
there.

Needless to say, there's never a dull moment in this city.
Whether it's shopping or eating out, there is always
something for everyone. With so many malls opening in the
city, and exquisite hotels connected to many malls, one can
spend the day without ever stepping outside! I was introduced
to a popular Chinese restaurant inside the Pacific Place mall
called Zen. This spacious,
sophisticated chic Chinese restaurant is known for it's wide
selection of Dim Sum, yum! It has a friendly atmosphere and
easily accessible. Two thumbs up on the food here, very
healthy and delicious.

For a nice day trip, hop on a bus and head to Stanley. The
beach and the market already main attractions of the south
side of Hong Kong Island, the waterfront has gotten a nice
make over. When I visited a year and a half a ago, the area
was still under construction but I hear the waterfront has a
few new Café's and restaurants with terrace seating
available on Sundays and public holidays. After a browse
through the marlet, I recommend eating at the cozy
Mediterranean restaurant Lucy's for
some heart warming home made dishes.

| Shopping through Stanley Market is
lots of fun! |
For a nice day trip, hop on a bus and head to Stanley. The
beach and the market already main attractions of the south
side of Hong Kong Island, the waterfront has gotten a nice
make over. When I visited a year and a half a ago, the area
was still under construction but I hear the waterfront has a
few new Café's and restaurants with terrace seating
available on Sundays and public holidays. After a browse
through the marlet, I recommend eating at the cozy
Mediterranean restaurant Lucy's for some heart warming home
made dishes.

Hong Kong at night has a whole new look and feel. The lights and buzz of the city really come alive.
There are countless cool bars in this city but a nice choice would be the M
Bar on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hong Kong. The bar
has a sophisticated atmosphere with a priceless view of the business district and the harbor. As
expected from a 5 star hotel, staff very friendly and service is top class.

For a lovely dining experience, try ISOLA. Accessible from the IFC MALL in
Central district, the bar and restaurant is preciously located by the harbor. The white décor
goes well with the refined atmosphere and fine Italian cuisine to go with it. Best to get a table out
on the terrace with the view.
It's getting warmer and before it gets too hot and humid,
head to Hong Kong and get energized!
