| Fado echoes through Lisbon |

女性が一人で旅をするのは、今はそれほど珍しくないようです。10年、15年前は一人旅ってちょっと勇気のいること、特に女性が一人で外
国に行くのはあまり良いイメージがなかったかもしれません。しかし外国を訪れる人も年々増え、旅慣れしてきたせいか、自分流に好奇心を満
たしたい人がどんどん増えるようになり、ソロ旅もちょっとしたトレンドになってきました。誰かと一緒に旅行をするのはもちろん楽しいし、外食をす
る時や万が一トラブルにあった時には誰かと一緒にいた方が心強いけど、一人旅にはまた違った魅力があるのです。

思い出に残る私の一人旅のデスティネーションは、哀愁が漂う街、ポルトガルはリズボンでした。17世紀から残された古い建物、タイルが敷き
詰められた歩道やプラザ、坂道を行き来する路面電車、全てがこの街の独特のムードを作り上げていました。 ボコボコとした石畳の地面を足
で感じながら 旧市街アルファマの迷路の様な細い路地に迷い込んだ。民家の窓から干される洗濯ものが風邪に揺られるのを見て民族歌
謡のファドが何処から聞こえてくる様な気もした。想像かもしれないけれど、今でもリズボンの事を思うとそんな気持ちが蘇ります。

ホテルも老舗から新しいプチ・ホテルまで、いろいろ揃っています。私が最初に泊まったのはテージョ川に面したJANELAS VERDES。18世紀の建物を改造したプチ・ホテルの屋上には図
書館と眺めが美しいテラスがあります。朝食は一階の素敵なガーデンでいただけます。かなりロマンチックなプチ・ホテルです。国立古代美術館
にも歩いて行けます。少しグラマラスなホテルに泊まりたいなら、高級地区バリオ・アルトにあるBARIO ALTO HOTELもお勧めです。高級なショッピング・エリアからも近く、ファド・レストランやバーが溢れる
地区にあるのでロケーションとしては抜群です。18世紀の面影が残しながらシックにデザインされたとてもお洒落なホテル。どれも個性があって
素敵なホテルです、私はせっかく一人で旅していたのでその時の気分に合わせてホテルを選んでみました。

観光するにはいくつか手段があります。ルートを調べて路面電車で観光するのも良いですし、バスもよく走っていますが、 比較的小さい街なの
で私は歩きながら観光するのがベストだと思います。港から旧市街のアルファーマ、そしてバリオ・アルト地区は歩ける距離にあるので一日で回
れます。ちょっと疲れたら数あるカフェで休憩する事も出来ます。ローカルにも観光客にも人気のCAFÉ BRASILEIRAでポルトガル流のエスプレッソBICAをオープン・テラスで楽し
むのもお勧めです。

レストランなら俳優のジョン・マルコヴィッチのBICA DO SOPATO。テージョ
川に面したトレンディーなお店は俳優のジョン・マルコヴィッチがオーナーだそうです。レストランとカフェ、そして夜遅くまでオープンしている寿司バー
もあります。
パンをベースにしたシチューACORDAや、新鮮なお魚のグリルなど人気のポルトガル料理をお探しならPAP ACORDA。元々はベーカリーだったそうですが、今ではアートやメデイアで働く人達の間でも大変人気のあ
るレストランだそうです。ポルトガル・ワインがほとんどですが、ワインのセレクションも良いです。旧市街のアルファーマにはSANTO ANTONIO DE ALFAMAもあります。落ち
着いた雰囲気のあるお店で美味しいポルトガル料理をリーズナブルなお値段で楽しめます。
時間に余裕があったら、特にこれからの季節はビーチに行くのもマスト！リズボンから電車で30分にあるCASCAISには小さな美しいビーチ
がいくつかあります。そして時間に余裕があるなら帰りはSINTRAに寄るのもお進めします。ユネスコの世界遺産に登録されている歴史的な
市街地は、詩人のバイロンがヨーロッパで最も美しい場所と呼んだほど、14世紀のフェアリーテールにタイムスリップしたようなマジック溢れる場
所です。

そしてベレンの塔があるベレン地区もリズボン中心から遠くありません。行かれた際はカスタード・ケーキPASTEIS DE BELEMを食べ
てみてください。美味しいですよ。
気づいたらまた食べ物の話をしてしまう私ですね。しかし一人で旅するのは新たな発見があり、自分自身の発見にもつながる。様々な"フレイ
バー"のある経験が出来ると思いますよ。行かれる方、気をつけてENJOY!
I’ve noticed lately how much attention working woman have within
the Japanese media. Career minded woman, it seems, to be the target
of many television programs, magazines, new products, restaurants,
shops, even my radio program target woman workers! It is a fact,
women with careers are on the rise and I think that’s wonderful.
What’s more, our society has come to embrace this change and
inspire more women to push toward their goals, that's brilliant.
Women traveling solo is also becoming a chic fad these days. Oh my
how far we have come from the days of my mother's generation where
even a woman sitting alone in a coffee shop was slightly frowned
upon. I do admit traveling alone can be lonely, especially when
eating out or heaven forbid, get lost or into some kind of trouble
but it there is something genuine about a journey on your own.

One of my most memorable solo trip was to the capitol of Portugal,
Lisbon. Cathedrals, castles and tiled faced buildings still intact
from the 17th century, this beautiful city emanates a certain
melancholic mood. I spent most of the days wondering through the
narrow cobble-stoned streets, intricate tiled plazas and watching
the trams pass by while imagining hearing Fado music riding on the
soft breeze from the port.

I felt very intimate with the city... I believe, one of the
qualities of traveling alone.
And since I was alone, I decided to treat myself to staying at 2
different hotels. I first chose JANELAS
VERDES in the historic center over looking the Tagus river. An
18th century house converted into a boutique hotel with cozy rooms
and a beautiful garden, as well as a library on the top floor
connected to a terrace with a beautiful view. A very romantic
hotel. My second hotel was in the chic Bario Alto district,
appropriately named BARIO ALTO
HOTEL. Close to the upscale shopping area and to the many Fado
restaurants and bars in Bario Alto, the location is prime.
A 5 star hotel restored and re-touched with contemporary design
while maintaining traditional elegance, it is one of the top places
to stay in the city. I felt very pampered and enjoyed staying at
this hotel.

Getting around the city is quite easy. There are buses and of
course taking the tram (a tour in itself!) is also a choice but I
do recommend walking. Walk up the narrow winding streets of the old
district Alfama and enjoy the view from the Castle of Sao Jorge
From Alfama, cutting through the city center and on to Bario Alto
is not a far distance. On the way, make a stop at CAFÉ BRASILEIRA one of Lisbon's oldest and
veru famous café. I recommend having BICA, Portuguese
espresso by the open terrace where a bronze statue of a famous
Portuguese poet also sits, you can't miss it. The traditional
interior of this caf? is also beautiful so do have a look around.

For some posh dining and nightlife in the warmer seasons, head down
to BICA DO SOPATO by the river. A
trendy restaurant partly owned by the actor John Malkovich has a
restaurant, caf? and a sushi bar open until late.
For authentic Portuguese food, there is the famous PAP ACORDA where they serve their famed
acorda stew, seafood and a selection of Portuguese wine. SANTO ANTONIO DE ALFAMA is
another highly recommended restaurant located in the old district
which serves authentic Portuguese food at a reasonable price in a
cozy atmosphere.
A day trip to the outer parts of Lisbon is also worth taking.
CASCAIS where all the beaches are will be buzzing in the coming
months. If you head to Cascais by train, make a detour on your way
back to SINTRA, registered as UNESCO World Heritage was said to be
“the most beautiful place in Europe” by the poet Lord Byron. A
charming, lovely 14th century historical town with small delicate
houses and a castle on top of the town.

Famous of the Tower of Belem, the town of BELEM is a nice stop too.
Don’t forget to try to the famous pastry Pasteis de Belem, a sweet
way to end a day trip.
What a beautiful place, the city of Lisbon. It’s a trip I still
remember well. Though I was alone, I never felt very lonely...

| Remembering the Venice Carnival | |
いよいよ春、到来ですね。桜も咲き、街がピンクのベールに包まれるこの時期。花見や桜祭りなど祭りムードが高まってきます、ワクワクします。
お祭りと言えばイタリアの「ヴェネツィア・カーニバル」をご存知ですか？世界三大カーニバルの一つであるこのカーニバル、豪華な中世の衣装と仮面をした人々が世界中から集まり、水の都がより一層、幻想的な街へ変身します。 毎年2月中旬に2週間に渡って行われるので、お祭りが終わった今頃のヴェネツィア、やっといつものペースに戻ったところでしょうか？街全体が小さな島々から出来ていて、全て橋で繋がっている。現代人には最初なかなか理解出来ないこの街の構造、一体どんなところなのか？興味津々でした。
私が訪れたのは2006年の2月。まだスペイン留学中で日本に帰る数ヶ月前でした。イタリアのお隣の国、スロバニアに住む友人が一緒にヴェネツィアのカーニバルに行かないかと誘ってくれたのです。日本に帰る前には出来るだけヨーロッパを見ておこうと思っていた頃だったので、とても嬉しいインビテーションでした。さっそくネットでフライトを予約し、衣装ショップで中世っぽい？衣装を借りてイタリアへ出発しました。
しかし、この時期のヴェネツィアは観光客も多いのでなかなか空室のホテルが見つからなく困っていました。そこで調べてみたらヴェネツィアにはお
家の一部をベッド＆ブレックファーストとして開放しているファミリーもいることを発見。運良く部屋も空いていたので、旅の計画もスムーズに行き
ました。泊まったのはサン・マルコ大聖堂から歩いて数分の所にあるヴェネツィアらしいゴシック・タイプのB&B「Ca'Moroni」。大
きなエントランスにコートヤード、こじんまりしたガーデンやヴェニーシャン・グラスで出来た窓。ベーシックではあるけどトラディショナルな家具の数々
が部屋に花を添えていました。豪華なホテルのようにルーム・サービスなどはありませんでしたが、B&Bに泊まってローカルの人達の暮ら
しをちょっと覗けた気がして、それはそれで楽しかったです。残念ながら「Ca'Moroni」さんは今部屋を貸していないそうですが、ヴェネツィ
アには数々のB&Bや長期レンタル出来るアパートメントもあります。
カーニバルの時期のヴェネツィア、 迷路の様な狭い路地で豪華な衣装や仮面をした人達とすれ違うという、中世の世界に迷い込んだように
幻想的でした。至る所にカラフルな飾りやマスクが売られ、どのショップも人でいっぱい。メイン会場のサン・マルコ大聖堂広場には豪華衣装を
見せびらかしながポーズをする人が集まり、パパラッチの様にカメラを操る観光客の姿も。そんな観光客を載せた水上タクシーやロマンチックなゴ
ンドラも沢山行き来し、常に街が動いている感じでした。 歴史が、建物や石畳の小道、小さな橋に生きている、そしてこの時期は人々もヴ
ェネツィアの歴史を蘇らせている、そんな事も思いながら私もスペインで用意した衣装とマスクを身につけ、ヴェネツィア・カーニバルに溶け込んで
行きました。

子供からお年寄りまでドレスアップしながら歩き回り、歩き疲れたらカフェで休憩をする。サン・マルコ大聖堂にある創業1720年の「カフェ・フロリアン」のインテリアは息をのむほど美しい。広場の反対側には18世紀末に誕
生した「カフェ・クアッドリ」もヴェネツィアの貴族を魅了した絵や精巧に作られた鏡が飾
られています。ここのチョコラーテもハートがとろけるほど美味しかったです。

サン・マルコ大聖堂広場の近く、パラッツィオ・ドゥカーレの並びの運河沿いにある５ツ星ホテル「ホテル・ダニエリ」のエントランスもカーニバル仕様にデコレートされていました。ここもヴェネツィアの歴史を感じさせる美し
いインテリア。泊まる事は出来ませんでしたが、テラスからの眺めはローカルの人達もお進めしています。今度は絶対！と思っています。

カーニバル中はサン・マルコ広場の北側にある「
ベストウエスタン カヴァレット E ドージェ オルセオロ」の前に多くの人が集まっていました。ホテルからはクラシックが流れ時々衣装を
着た人が窓際でポーズを決めていました。ここも14世紀初期からある歴史あるホテルでイタリア最も古いホテルだそうです。エントランスですぐ
にゴンドラに乗れるのも素敵です。

水の都にはカフェやレストランは沢山あります。ポンテ・リアルトの近くにある「アル・ノン
ノ・リゾルト」はシーフードやピッツァ、パスタと定番のイタリアン料理のメニューですが、滞在中に薦めてくれたローカル達も認めるレストラ
ン。隠れ家的なちょっと見つけにくい場所にありますが、落ち着ける雰囲気のお店です。夏は小さなコートヤードにテラス席もだしているそうです
。とてもロマンチック。

カーニバル期間中は観光客も多く、思う様に美術館巡りは出来ませんでしたが夢のような体験でした。今度は暖かい時期のヴェネツィアで恋
をしたいな。
Spring is just around the corner. I love the feeling of being
surrounded by the colors the season brings and of course, the warm
weather. Cherry Blossoms also add a soft pink layer to the city,
making the grey façade of Tokyo quite beautiful. It's also
time to come out of hibernation and stretch out those winter kinks
and get ready for the coming festivities.
Speaking of festivals, I was thinking about the Venice Carnival
that just wrapped up this year's two-week-bash in February. One of
the oldest and most celebrated festivals in the world, the city of
Venice turns into a place suspended in time, or rather back in
time. People dressed in gorgeous 18th century costumes covering
their faces with Venetian masks walk the city with music and
performances taking place everywhere you look. I've heard it dates
back to the 14th century where masquerade balls were held 6 months
out of the year. Now that's a party!
As many travel lovers will agree, Venice is a place to go at least
once in a lifetime. A city made of small islands held together by
hundreds of bridges. Gondolas and water taxis crossing the water
canals, a labyrinth of windy narrow alleys... I wondered if this
was a real place on Earth. It seemed like a faraway dreamland and
so, I craved to see for myself.
Fortunately, I was invited to go to Venice to see the Carnival in
2006 by a good friend who had just moved to Slovenia, the country
right next to Italy. I was still studying in Spain at the time but
had already decided to move back to Japan in a few months time so
the invitation came at the right time since I wanted to take in as
much of Europe before I shipped back to Asia. In no time I booked a
flight to Venice, rented a costume and set a time and place of
where to meet my friend.
The only problem was finding a place to stay. During Carnival, all
the hotels are booked and the chances of finding a hotel room are
pretty slim. As luck would have it, with a little help, found a
charming bed and breakfast "Ca'Moroni" located a few minutes walk
from St. Marks Place. It was a basic, but charming Venetian style
house decorated with traditional furniture and spacious rooms. It
was convenient, well priced and most of all, I was happy to get a
glimpse of a Venetian home, which is something one cannot
experience by staying at a hotel. Unfortunately, Ca'Moroni has
closed its doors as a B&B but there are
many families who have turned their homes into a B&B or
apartments to rent.

Venice during Carnival is really like being in another place in
time. The narrow streets were colorfully decorated and shops filled
with masks and costumes. I would pass people dressed in beautifully
designed gowns and masks while hearing music somewhere in the
distance. Everywhere I turned, history seemed to come alive. It was
mesmerizing. We decided to put on our Carnival gear, blend in with
the crowd and walked the cobbled streets for several hours stopping
at a few cafes on the way. We stopped at one of the oldest Cafes in
Venice "Café Quadri" for rich
sweet chocolate. The walls decorated with flower designs and large
mirrors that surely enchanted the aristocrats in the day still
charm visitors like myself. Most famous would be "Café Florian". Renowned for it's beautiful
atmosphere and refined quality, it's kept its reputation for almost
300 years.

We also took a peek into "Hotel
Danieli" located by the water very close to St. Mark's Square.
Formerly a palace restored into a luxury hotel. The view from the
terrace is spectacular, so I hear... hopefully there will be a next
time for me to stay this hotel. I have a feeling it won't close for
a while.

I noticed many people came to gather in front of "Cavalletto and Doge
Orseolo Hotel" during Carnival. Located on the north side of
St.Mark's Square with easy access to gondolas, I can see why so
many are attracted. There was classical music flowing out from the
windows with occasional appearances from a full on Carnival devotee
dressed in beautiful costumes.

There are many recommendations for restaurants within Venice. I
remember dining at "Al Nono Risorto"
tucked away in an alley close to the Ponte Rialto. Basic Venetian
seafood dishes, pizza and pasta on the menu but the locals give it
a thumbs-up and I liked the intimate atmosphere of the restaurant.
The little courtyard seems like a very romantic area to enjoy
dinner during the warmer months.

The memories come back to me now and I wish to be there again soon.
Could a fairytale romance be waiting for me in Venice? I/ll never
stop dreaming of that.

| Rediscovering of Los Angeles |
|
何回訪れても楽しいと思える場所ってありますよね。それはその場所に刺激されるからとか、癒されるから、ローカルの人が好きだから、 気候
が良いからと理由は様々でしょうけど、私とロサンゼルスは何かと縁があります。
大学時代には親友が住んでいたので遊びに行き、ラジオ番組の取材や今回のグラミー賞授賞式の様なイベントに出席するために訪れるなど
、ロスがいつも私を呼んでいる？とちょっとロマンチックに考えています。小さい頃はニューヨークで過ごし、東京暮しも今年で25年になります。
私はデフォルトで"イースト・コースト"な人間だと思っていますが、最近はどうも"ウェスト・コースト"に惹かれています。これは何か意味がある
のでしょうか？あまり深く考えずに今回もウェスト・コーストを代表する都市ロサンゼルスを満喫させていただきました。
東京からのフライト時間は約10時間。アメリカン航空ビジネス・クラスの広々としたレクライング・シートで寛ぎながらのフライト。居心地の良い
フライトで行くと目的地をより楽しめるので良いですね。最新作映画もチェック出来るしね！
ロスには朝に着くのでホテルにチェック・インするまでの時間を利用して街を観光。ダウンタウンLAはまるで建築家のキャンバスの様にアールデコ
の建物や現代的な建築物が集まっています。例えば1930年代に建てられたロサンゼルス・タイムスのビルやミレニアム・ビルトモア・ホテルは
むかしのハリウッド映画の背景を想像させる、頑丈でスタイリッシュな建物。また建築家フランク・ゲーリーが手がけた"魚のウロコ"をイメージし
たウォルト・ディズニー・コンサート・ホールは、カリフ
ォルニアの日差しを眩しく美しく反射しています。オールド＆ニューが混合するダウンタウンはとても印象的でした。

午後はロスの街を一望出来るゲッティー・センターへ。丘のふもとにある駐車場に車を止め
、トラムでゆっくりセンターへ登ります。広々としたゲッティーさまの敷地内には、モダンな白亜の建物や南カリフォリニアを象徴するサボテン・ガー
デン、カフェテリアがあります。ここでただランチをする人や、眺めを楽しみにくる人も多いとか。もちろん絵画や彫刻、写真展など数々の展覧会
も行われています。一日ゆっくり過ごせる場所、何度も足を運びたい場所ですね。入場は無料です。

アートなロサンゼルスと言えば、ロサンゼルス・カウンティー美術館（通称LACMA)もあります。ウェ
スト・コースト最大のミュージアムは2006年から10年計画の修復作業がスタートし、2008年から一部がオープンしています。世界5大
陸の芸術作品が約10万点展示されているLACMA、全ての作品を見るのは丸一日かかりそうですが、常に面白い展覧会が開催されてい
るのでおススメです。私が大好きなアメリカの伝統的な雑誌VANITY FAIRの写真展も2月末まで開催されていました。ちなみに毎月
第2火曜日は入場無料となっています。

LACMAからも近いTHE GROVEやFARMER'S MARKETはロサンゼルスでも有名なショッピング・エリアです。マーケット内には
クレープ屋さんや最近注目されているフローズン・ヨーグルト店「ピンクベリー」もあります。お
土産に最適な小物もここで見つける事が出来ますよ。

そうそう！最近LAっ子やセレブの間でも人気を集めているスウィーツと言えばカップケーキ！このカップケーキ・ブームの火付け役となったビバリー
・ヒルズにある専門店「スプリンクルス・カップケーキ」は、今も行列が出来るほどの人気。
手のひらサイズの可愛いカップケーキ、２２のフレイバーから選ぶことが出来ます。オリジナル・デザインも注文できるとか。東京にもスプリンクルス
が今後出来るそうですが、先取りしたい方はビバリー・ヒルズの本店に行ってみて下さい。とっても可愛いお店です。

ビバリー・ヒルズでシッピングも良いですが、可愛いブティックをお探しならロバートソン・ブルバードはおススメです。以前も紹介したセレクト・ショッ
プ「キットソン」やジーンズ・ブランド「トゥルー・
レリジョン」や「AGジーンズ」もあります。ジーンズ・フェチな私にはたまりませんでした。
トレンディーなカフェ・レストラン「THE IVY」やアジアン・フュージョン料理で有名な「CHAYA BRASSERIE」も要チェック。セレブを目撃する確率高いです。ロ
バートソンをうろうろするパパラッチ達の行動を見るのもちょっと楽しかったりして。

The city of Los Angeles has a hold on me. I'm not sure why but we
seem to have an ongoing relationship. I remember the first time I
set foot in L.A. was in the late 70's. My parents took me to
Disneyland. These were the days when Disneyland was ONLY in L.A.
and my heart jumped of excitement stepping in the Land of Dreams.
Years after I went back to visit a close friend attending
University there. Those days I spent the days walking around
Melrose and hanging out in Santa Monica or checking out the
beautiful bodies at Venice Beach. I went back another time in the
early 90’s with a friend who had never been to L.A. We shared the
same interest in music and decided to hit the nightclubs of Sunset
Strip and see for ourselves where Frank Zappa, Motley Crew and Van
Halen made their mark.
Since then, I've returned to L.A. with my radio crew to report on
music festivals or big events like this year's Grammy Awards. Come
to think of it, I have been going to L.A. for over 2 decades and it
never seizes to surprise and overwhelm me. It does have a hold on
me.
The flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles is about 10 hours. This time
I flew with American Airlines in Business Class seats. Thanks to
the luxuriously comfortable reclining seat, I landed in L.A. well
rested to begin my trip.
We landed in the morning so decided to see the sights of Downtown
L.A. before checking in to out hotel. I realized how the city has
maintained its charm while adding that special "bling-bling"
through the years. I found the architecture of the city pretty
amazing. The art deco buildings made me think of those classic
Hollywood movies from the 20's and 30's. The Los Angeles Times
building with it's limestone fa?ade stood boldly while the
Millenium Biltmore Hotel held a feel of mystery and romance. The
most impressive modern building was The Walt Disney Concert Hall, a masterpiece
designed by Frank Gehry. The fish scale like texture and sleek
curves of the hall shined under the morning California sun.

We spend the afternoon taking in the gorgeous view of L.A. from The Getty Center. The architecture and
spacious settings of the Getty are spectacular too, not to mention
the open-air cafes and beautiful cacti gardens. The museum's
permanent collection includes European paintings, drawings,
sculptures and photographs from Europe and America and entrance is
free. I envy the locals who have easy access to such a wonderful
place. I'd spend lots of time here, pack a lunch, bring a good book
and sit in the sun overlooking the city.... maybe next time.

Art is also always booming in L.A.. LACMA (Los
Angeles County Museum of Art) has opened the first phase of its
transformation since 2008. It is a massive museum filled with art
pieces from every corner of the world. I enjoyed the recent Vanity
Fair Portrait exhibit with photos dating back to early 1900.
Entrance is free second Tuesday of every month and exhibits are
updated periodically.

Not far from LACMA, is the Grove and Famer's Market famous for it's
shopping, food and knickknacks. Farmer's Marlet is a good place to
find some cheeky souvenirs like stickers and T-shirts. The food
stalls are pretty interesting too with savory crepes to nut and
fruit stands, also frozen yogurt from Pinkberry.

Oh and a must do in Beverly Hills is to line up for cupcakes at Sprinkels! Well, not really, what would be
best is to swing by during the week to AVOID the lines but
Sprinkles is responsible for creating the latest craze of cupcakes.
22 flavors to choose from made fresh every day. Rumors have it that
Sprinkles will be making a debut in Tokyo soon but when in L.A.,
make sure to stop by Sprinkles for their charmingly sweet cupcakes.
You never know, there may be a celebrity waiting in line with you.

Celebrity sightings are best around Beverly Hills but I also
noticed a few paparazzi stalking around Robertson Boulevard. The
street famous for the popular shop Kitson and
other hip boutiques, it's the latest shopping area for the hip and
famous. You can do some great shopping also at AG jeans and True Religion
for jeans lovers like me. Taking a lunch break at the famous caf?
restaurant The Ivy and dinner at the stylish
Chaya Brasserie for some Asian-
fushion cuisine is always a good way to end the day.
My relationship with Los Angeles doesn't end here. I have a feeling
it will call me back sometime soon. Looking forward to my next
adventure.

Angeles!” |

8ヶ月ぶりのロサンゼルス。今回はグラミー賞授賞式が開催されていた事もあり、いつも以上に華やかなムードが漂っていました。ポール・マッカ
ートニーやスティービー・ワンダーというベテラン・ミュージシャンからコールドプレイ、ジェイーZなど今の音楽シーンをリードするアーティストたちが世
界中から集った大イベント。これほどトップ・クラスのセレブが一堂に集まるイベントは他にはないでしょう、LAならでは！ 22の素晴らしいパ
フォーマンスが行われ、新たな受賞者が生まれた今年のグラミー賞。主要部門ではロバート・プラント＆アリソン・クラウスが最優秀レコード賞と
最優秀アルバム賞、最優秀ソング賞にはコールドプレイ、新人賞にUKのアデル、最優秀R&Bアルバム賞は去年悲しい事件で家族
を失ったジェニファー・ハドソンが受賞しました。ジェニファーの迫力のあるグラミー・パフォーマンスはスタンディング・オベーションで迎えられました。
思い出すだけでも感動の涙がこみ上げてきちゃいます。
授賞式は今年もダウンタウンにあるステープル・センターで開催され、特別エリアでは授賞式が始まる前も後もプライベート・パーティーが行われ
、ドレスアップした女性やタキシードを着たダンディーな男性の姿が会場に花を添えていました。ステープル・センターだけではなく周辺にある複
合施設L.A.LIVEのノキア・シアターの大型スクリーンでもグラミー賞のレッド・カーペ
ットの模様や受賞シーンを映しながら、一層パーティー・ムードを盛り上げていました。

L.A.のダウンタウンは今L.A.LIVEを中心に再開発がどんどん進んでおり、とても刺激的なエリアに生まれ変わっています。
L.A.LIVEにはスポーツ観戦やコンサートの後も楽しめるレストランやスポーツ・バーがオープンしています。中にはラテン料理レストラン＆ナ
イトクラブが併設された「ボカ・アット・ザ・コンガ・ルーム」や、200種類以上のビールで有名なバー＆グリル・レストラン「ザ・ヤード・ハウス」。ここ
のビールは45センチもあるグラスに注がれて出てくるのです、ビックリ！今後、カリフォルニアで最もヒップな寿司レストラン「KATSUYA」や、
来年はリッツ・カールトン・ホテルがオープンする予定です。期待ですね！

そしてL.A.LIVEを訪れたら絶対に見逃してほしくないのが「ザ・グラミー・ミュ
ージアム」。グラミーの歴史を始めグラミー受賞者を決める過程、アーティスト・メモロビリアに様々な音楽ジャンルの展示など、グラミー
に関係する全てがここで見る、そして感じる事が出来ます。最上階のフロアのテーマは“全ての音楽ジャンルを讃える
”と言う事で、160の音楽ジャンルにフォーカスしています。160のジャンル！？があるなんて驚きです。あるジャンルのルーツと他
のジャンルとの関係を実際に聴きながら知る事が出来るインタラクティブなコーナーや、音楽が時代の変化にどれほど影響があったのかを知れ
るコーナーもあり、どっぷり音楽の世界に浸る事が出来ます。3階のテーマは“音楽が出来るまでのプロセスに焦点をあてる
”ということで、シンガー・ソングライターが語る「曲が生まれるまでの過程」や、裏舞台を支えるプロデューサーやエンジニアを紹介し
ています。8つのブースでは音楽が出来るまでのプロセスを、名プロデューサーやDJなどの映像とともに体験できます（これはとても面白かった
！）。そうそう、ビヨンセやJ.LO, マイケル・ジャクソンがグラミー賞出席の際に着た衣装も展示されています。近くで衣装の細かいデザインが
見るとデザイナーがどれくらいこだわって衣装を作ったのか、すなわち、グラミー賞で演奏するのがどれほど偉大なイベントなのかが良く分かります
。そして“グラミー賞の歴史を振り返る”がテーマの2階では、過去のグラミー・シーンの映像やシアター、特別展示の
ギャラリーもあります。また最優秀レコードと最優秀アルバム部門の違いなど部門の違いなどがここで知ることが出来ます。グラミーのバックステ
ージに招待された気分になれるグラミー・ミュージアム。去年12月にオープンしたばかりでこれからさらに展示物やショーケースも加わって行くそ
うです。ますます面白いミュージアムになっていきそうです。現在は英語のみですが、今後は日本語の解説も加える予定だそうです。是非機会
があれば寄ってみて下さい。

デザイン・ホテルも増えています。私の泊まった「Oホテル」はとてもクールでチャーミングでした。
シンプルでありながら黒、白と茶色と落ち着いた色でデザインされたモダンなホテル。バー・レストランも人気で週末にはアフター・ファイブにやって
くる若いワーキング・ウーマンも多く集まるそうです。レストランでは個性豊かなタパス料理が楽しめます。
ダウンタウンにはまだまだあります。次回に紹介します。どうぞお楽しみに！
It's been 8 months since I was in L.A. This time, I got myself a
golden ticket to get the real feel of the 51st Grammy Awards. L.A.
seemed more glamorous than ever with all the superstars and
beautiful people from around the world. Legendary artists Stevie
Wonder, Paul McCartney and Robert Plant attended this year's
Grammy's alongside today's most popular artists like Coldplay and
Jay-Z. I don't think there is another city that can bring together
such A-class stars all at once.. truly, only in L.A. The big event
consisted of 22 performances from today's best and moving speeched
from those who took home a gramophone trophy. Best Record and Best
Album went to Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, a wonderful
surprise. Coldplay won Best Song and another Brit Adele took home
Best New Artist. The star of the night, in my eyes was Jennifer
Hudson, who unfortunately lost her family last year, took home Best
R&B Album. Her powerful performance gained a standing ovation
from the crowd, a truly moving performance.
The Grammy's were held once again at the Staples Center in downtown
L.A. There was a definite buzz in the L.A. air that night as women
in beautiful dresses and men in dashing tuxedos came out of their
stretch limos and decorated the scene. Private parties before and
after the event were on high gear and there seemed to be no
shifting down until well into the morning. L.A. Live was also buzzing with the red carpet and Grammy
highlights shown on the big screen of Nokia Theater during and
after the event.

I was very surprised how much downtown Los Angeles has changed.
L.A.LIVE, though still partially under construction is becoming an
entertainment hub of the downtown area. There are entertainment
venues, cinemas restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, even a bowling
alley.
The popular franchise bar & grill The Yard Garden with it's 100
to 250 selections (depends on location) of beer is a fun place to
check out with your buddies. The beer comes in half yard size
glasses.. yes, you read correctly, half a yard! At Boca at the
Conga Room, one can enjoy Mexican & South American dishes and
head over to the Conga side for some late night dancing.
California's favorite Sushi Restaurant Katsuya is due to open soon
and the exquisite Ritz Carlton Hotel opens next year. All very
exciting!

My favorite attraction within L.A. Live is The Grammy Museum. You can find everything you wanted
to about the Grammy Awards and more can be found here. It
celebrates music and how music relates to us in life, culture,
society, and politics through interactive exhibits. The top floor
focuses on the genres of music where one can read, touch and hear
about 160 music genres that exist today and it's relations or
influences to other genres. The 3rd floor tunes in on the process
of creating music with introductions and interview clips of
renowned producers and editors. I don't think there is another
museum that teaches so much about the creation process in great
detail. Being a music lover, I found this very special and
interesting. Outfits worn by past Grammy performers or attendees
are on display here too. Beyonce, J.Lo's “The Dress”,
Micheal Jackson's jackets and gloves are just a few on display You
can see there was so much effort put into these outfits, which made
me think of how exceptional the Grammy Awards are. The lower floor
looks back on the Grammy's historic moments with videos of past
highlights and a theater with seminars held periodically. You can
even learn about the voting process and about each category and the
differences, for example between Record and Album of the year.

It is like having a backstage pass to the Grammy's being at the
Grammy Museum and it's always updated with new data, trivia and
donations from artists so you can visit again and again.

After some music education, I recommend stopping by Lucky Strike,
the bowling lounge inside L.A. Live. Retro-modern designed seating
with cozy lighting and pop art and art shows on the wall, it's like
no other bowling alley I've seen. There is also a VIP area, which
makes it so L.A. posh!
I love the way downtown L.A. is changing. There is a hip energy to
the area where it used to be known only as the financial district.
There are designer hotels popping up in the area just like the one
I stayed in, The O Hotel on South Flower
Street. Intimately charming with posh décor. I loved staying
there and enjoyed the bar and restaurant too, great fushion tapas.
The weekends are popular with the after work crowd and live stages
take place periodically.

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, which was
featured on the reality show “The Hills” may have given
a boost in image to the area? Who knows? In any case, it's becoming
a place for the younger crowd and I heard a few Hollywood
celebrities are looking into property here. Watch out Hollywood,
Downtown's catching up!

| Vibrant Colors of Barcelona |
|
アート溢れる街、バルセロナ 。この街の活気にはいつも圧倒されます。
パブロ・ピカソやサルバドール・ダリなど、スペインを代表する芸術家が愛した街。またアントニ・ガウディの独創的な建築物が今も色鮮やかに残
る街。ここには人の想像力を開花させるマジックがあるように思います。スペインの中でも独特の雰囲気とお洒落感のあるシティーです。中世の
面影が残る細くて暗い路地からなる旧市街地バリオ・ゴチカや、観光客に人気のラス・ランブラス通り、ガウディの建築物が大通りを飾るアイシ
ャンプレのエリアに、バルセロナを一望出来るティビダボ。そしてもちろん豪華客船が浮かぶ港エリア、地中海に面する数々のビーチと、どの地
区からも強い個性を感じます。10年前に初めて行き、それから何回も観光で行っていますが、毎回良い思い出を作って帰って来ます。

「ホテル・アーツ」「OHM」や「マジェスティック」と行ったトップクラス・ホテルを誇るバルセロナにはセンスの良いプチ・ホテルもあります。私のお気に
入りはラス・ランブラス通りから少し入った路地にある「カサ・カンペール・バ
ルセロナ」。スペインの老舗シューズ・ブランド、カンペールがプロデュースしたこの4つ星ホテルは、シンプルで機能的、そしてシューズ同様
に遊び心があり、ポップにデザインされています。すでに存在する建物の「中だけ」を改造して使っているので表は古く、中はモダン。その斬新な
形もバルセロナらしい。省エネにも積極的で、必要以上の電化製品などを置かないとか、またロビーには宿泊客がいつでも使えるように自転
車が10台ほど天井からぶら下がっています。ロケーションもショッピング・エリアにも港にも近くグッド！

自転車と言えば、一昨年からバルセロナでは政府がバックアップする自転車レンタル・サービス「バイシング」
も話題を呼んでいます。200カ所のバイク・ステーションには約3000台の自転車が保有され、低価格の年会費を払えばいつでも利用出
来ると言うサービス。これは住民を対象にしたサービスですが、よりクリーンな環境を目指す街として、これからも気持ちの良い＆美しいバルセロ
ナが期待で来そうです。もちろん観光客もレンタル出来るバイク・ショップもあるので自転車フレンドリーなバルセロナを今度は自転車観光する
のもおススメです。いろんな発見がありそう。

そんないろんな発見がありそうな、バルセロナのトレンド発信エリア「エル・ボルン」は昼も夜も面白い。どこかロマンチックな旧市街の面影に新世
代のデザインが融合するレストランやバーが集まり、新しいお店もどんどんオープンしています。カタルニアの名建築チームによって誕生した、サン
タ・カテリーナ・マーケット内にあるオリジナル・タパス・レストラン「クイネス・
サンタ・カテリーナ」は、開放感のある広いスペースに天井の窓からたっぷりの日差しが入り込み、ウッド調のインテリアはアット・ホームな
雰囲気を漂わせているレストラン。アジアン、地中海、イタリアンとベジタリアン料理のフュージョン・メニューも楽しく美味しいです。30代のカップ
ルやグループにも人気のエル・ボルン、お洒落な方々におススメです。
穏やかな地中海も魅力のバルセロナ。数あるビーチの中、街から少し離れた、ローカルに人気のビーチもあります。人混みの心配もなく、お洒
落な海の家のあるビーチ「LLORET DEL MAR」は息をのむほど美しい。車で行く必要はありますが、スペインで運転できる自信がある
方は是非VAMOS A LA PLAYA（ビーチに行こう！）して下さい。

The city of Art, Barcelona. I'm overwhelmed by the vibrant colors
and designs that make this city so special. No other city in Spain
holds this kind of eccentricity. It is of course the city Antoni
Gaudi helped to build and the city Salvadore Dali and Pablo Picasso
fell in love with. Eccentric is maybe a norm to the people of this
city. Medieval times still breathe through the small dark streets
of Barrio Gotico, the energy of Las Ramblas with street performers
and tourists is always on high and the dreamy illusions of Gaudi
light up the areas of Eixample. Can't forget the beautiful yachts
that float close to the port and the beautiful bodies that lay on
the beach. I was immediately drawn to this city from the first time
I was there 10 years ago, and still yearn to go back.

Being one of the most visited cities in Spain, there are lavish 5
star hotels like Hotel Arts, OHM and the Majestic but there are new
concept hotels that are gaining popularity among travel lovers. One
of my favorites the concept hotel produced by the renowned Spanish
shoe brand Camper, simply called Casa Camper Barcelona. A 4 star hotel close to the
bustling Las Ramblas, eco friendly with simple, chic design and
comfort. I love the detail of design of this hotel and loved the
bicycles hanging from the lobby ceiling. The bicycles are for
guests who want to see Barcelona the eco-friendly way.

Bicycles are growing more popular throughout the city too. The
community bicycle program Bicing started a few
years ago and is taking off with the locals. The idea is to promote
eco friendly transportation through sharing bicycles. There are
over 200 stations that park more than 3000 bicycles and anyone who
is registered and pays a yearly fee can use these bicycles. The
service is only for those who live in Barcelona but there are
private companies who rent bicycles to visitors too.

Touring the city in a bicycle is not only fun but a great way to
get to know the city your own personal way. By bicycle or by foot,
make sure to take a stroll through El Borne district. One of the
city's trendiest areas, there's a romantic feel of the old city and
the freshness of the present generation mixed in a cool intimate
way. Chic restaurants, boutiques and cozy bars make up this
district to make it a great place to go day and night. My recent
find was a tapas restaurant Cuines
Santa Catarina in the new Santa Caterina market, recently
renovated by top architects. The restaurant is in an open space
with tall ceilings with natural light coming through the sky
lights. Wood interiors and racked walls give it an extra intimate
feel. The menu consists of Asian, Italian, Mediterranean and
Vegetarian Tapas, a very interesting delicious mix.
There are countless tapas restaurants and more places to see but I
shall leave it for another time. One more thing.. the beach! You
can't leave out the beach when in Barcelona. If you're feeling
adventurous and drive out of the city a little, take a trip
Lloret del Mar. It's a beach that sits inside a
hidden cove so you can avoid the crowded and have the place all to
your self.. well almost. Champagne Sangrias are a must have
cocktail!
