Changes To Domestic Checked Bag Charges Effective February 1



American Airlines And American Eagle Before you head to the airport, please familiarize yourself with changes affecting international and domestic checked bag charges.

Domestic Travel
Within And Between the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
For customers who purchase domestic Economy Class tickets, please see the chart below for applicable charges for checking a first and/or second bag.

Some passengers are exempt from paying any checked bag charges such as: 

  • AAdvantage Gold®, AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Executive Platinum® as well as oneworld® Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Those who purchase tickets in First and Business Class as well as those who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Active U.S. Military personnel traveling on orders or personal travel and active U.S. Military dependents traveling on orders
  • View a complete list of exceptions
The changes apply for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle and AmericanConnection® flights within the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Note: The checked bag charges to and from Canada have not changed.

Customers may pay checked bag charges at an airport Self-Service Check-In machine, Curbside Check-In, or at the airport ticket counter.

International Travel
The U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to, from or through Europe and India
For customers purchasing Economy Class tickets between certain international destinations on or after September 14, 2009, the charge for checking a second bag has changed. Travelers may check one bag for no charge and a second bag for $50 USD. The revised policy applies for travel to or from the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and the following countries:

Belgium Ireland
England Italy
France Spain
Germany Switzerland
India

The changes above apply to any flight operated by American Airlines.

Here are some examples of exceptions for travelers who do not pay any checked bag charges. View a complete list of exceptions.
