Eat
The culinary possibilities in this city are
endless. In little neighborhoods and around every corner, there is an abundance
of delicious cuisines available to please every palate. Want some satisfying dim
sum? Head to Chinatown. Italian? North Beach has it. Fine wines? San Francisco
is only a cork’s throw away from one of the finest wine regions in the world —
Napa Valley and Sonoma County. And satisfying your sweet tooth is easy at
Ghirardelli Square, birthplace of the famous chocolate company. Some of the more interesting cuisine includes a restaurant dedicated entirely to garlic (The Stinking Rose), a spot that’s billed as the birthplace of Irish coffee in the U.S. (The Buena Vista Cafe, which serves around 2,000 cups of the potent brew a day), or dive into some clam chowder served in a bread bowl at Fisherman’s Wharf. And for a real take-it-and-go treat, we suggest grabbing a cone at the Ben & Jerry’s in the Haight-Ashbury area before walking on to the expansive Golden Gate Park. Our favorite flavor at the San Francisco B & J’s is Cherry Garcia, of course.

See
The wharf is IT. According to a survey
of hotel guests conducted by the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau, the
area by the bay — Fisherman’s Wharf — is the most visited attraction in the City
by the Bay. And no wonder; with its barking sea lions, open-air restaurants,
shops, and sailing ships, the wharf is one of the most happening places in the
world. See for yourself. If you love to get outside, then San Francisco is the place for you. With an average temperature in the spring and summer hovering around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s easy to enjoy being outdoors day and night. One great attraction is located just north of the city across the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito, a quaint little town nestled up against the shore, is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon shopping and strolling. Not to mention, Sausalito boasts a beautiful view of San Francisco across the water.

Sleep
So you’ve had a busy day conquering the city —
checking out the Pier, cruising through Haight-Ashbury, touring Alcatraz, and
shopping around Union Square — and now it’s time for a little shut-eye. Luckily,
the accommodations in San Francisco are plentiful and very, well,
accommodating. Take the stately Westin St. Francis for instance. Originally opened in 1904, its close proximity to Union Square and attention to detail have made the hotel one of the best places to stay. A more recent addition to the hotel scene is the W San Francisco that since opening in 1999 has gained praise from customers and the media. Travel + Leisure named it one of the best hotels in the world in 2003. And the exquisite new St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco serves as a prestigious landmark, located directly next door to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and across the street from the serene tranquility of Yerba Buena Gardens. Then there’s the Palace Hotel, which has served kings, queens, and everyone in between under its domed stained glass ceiling since 1875. Basically, no matter where you decide to put your feet up, you’re guaranteed a terrific night’s sleep in one of the greatest cities in the world.

![]() | Experience Back across the bridge in SF proper, experiencing the sights and sounds of the city first-hand is a must. And what better way to travel than by cable car? This signature mode of transportation dates back to 1873 and still provides an exciting and unique way to see the metropolitan area. And at about five bucks a ride, it’s one of the cheapest ways to get around. If you’re really into cable cars, you’ll want to head over to Mason Street and check out the Cable Car Museum full of all things cable car related.

Music
Many cities lay claim to having a rich musical
history, but San Francisco is a city with a completely legitimate claim. If it’s
live music you crave, there are abundant nightclubs (Bimbo’s 365 Club, Slim’s,
Great American Music Hall) and historical theaters (Fillmore, Warfield) in the
city offering everything from current hit-makers to jazz legends playing
nightly. A metropolis that’s always been a hotbed for music naturally has one of
the best record shops in the world — Amoeba Music — in the heart of Haight-Ashbury, where the
Grateful Dead first started jamming. The 25,000 square foot store has everything (CDs, LPs, posters, DVDs, etc.) and even hosts free live
in-store performances. In short, there are so many spectacular things to see and do in San Francisco that a single trip to the city will generate a lifetime of unforgettable memories. Plan your trip today! |
