Celebrating 80 Years of Service

Honoring our Proud Past and Looking Forward to our Future

Flight Attendants look ahead as tradition meets innovation

Eighty years ago, the first four Flight Attendants at American Airlines graduated from training and took to the skies. Since that day — May 3, 1933 — much has changed, but the core values of providing you safe air travel and top-notch service are still firmly in place.

You'll benefit from the exciting changes we're making to modernize the airline for the future:

  • New tools, like the Samsung Galaxy Note, to allow our Flight Attendants to quickly access helpful information such as your seat assignments and special services, loyalty program status and connecting gate information
  • We're taking delivery of an average of one new plane a week, so book a flight now on our Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus 319, or American Eagle Embraer E175 to see how we're changing the way you fly
  • Watch what you want when you want on our new planes with the latest in personal, in-seat entertainment, and stay connected with Wi-Fi, available on most flights within the continental U.S. and on select international flights

We celebrate our role at the forefront of many Flight Attendant profession firsts throughout the past 80 years, including:

  • One of the first carriers to hire African-American Flight Attendants in the 1960s
  • The first U.S. carrier to begin equipping its planes with life-saving automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

Our industry has changed dramatically since that first class of Flight Attendants started flying. We‘re helping you stay more connected and mobile than ever as we take you to all corners of the globe.

Last year, we announced our intent to recruit and hire more than 1,500 new Flight Attendants— our largest group in over a decade. Since then, more than 680 new Flight Attendants have graduated and taken to the skies.

As we honor the achievements of Flight Attendants over the past 80 years and celebrate what’s to come, we look forward to serving you onboard your next flight.
