You can change an eligible trip online in just a few steps. While you may have to pay the difference, there are no change fees for award tickets.

Step 1: Find your trip

You’ll need your 6-character confirmation code. If you don’t know it, find the confirmation email you received when you booked your trip.

Step 2: Make a change

Choose ‘Change trip’ in the toolbar and follow the prompts.

When changing your trip, we’ll reinstate the miles* to the original AAdvantage® account from your original trip. We deduct the miles from the original AAdvantage® account used (even if the amount is the same). You may still need to pay the difference for taxes. Any amount you're owed will be refunded to the credit card from your original booking.

Step 3: Check your email

When you’re done, we’ll send you an email with the information you need, including your new ticket number.

*Please allow up to 72 hours to process your reinstatement. Your AAdvantage® account balance will be updated as soon as the reinstatement is processed.

If your plans change and you no longer want to travel, you can cancel your trip anytime on aa.com.

We'll reinstate your miles and refund eligible taxes and fees at no charge up to 1 year from the date you purchased your ticket, as long as you cancel before your first flight departs. If you cancel your trip on aa.com, your miles will be reinstated and your refund will be requested automatically in most cases.

How we prioritize upgrades on American

If your plans change, you can contact Reservations to change your mileage upgrade award. There’s no fee to change your mileage upgrade award, but you may need to redeem more miles or pay the difference, depending on the new award price.

Tickets upgraded with mileage upgrade awards retain all the original fare rules and restrictions of the original purchased fare.

Reserve seats with miles

You can use miles to buy a seat for an existing trip. To do this:

Find your trip Select or change seats to load the seat map Change the toggle selection from 'Cash' to 'Miles' Choose your seats Log in to your AAdvantage® account, if you haven't already Check that you chose 'AAdvantage® miles' as the payment on 'Review and pay' Click 'Pay now'

Reactivate miles

You can reactivate your expired miles for a fee in 1 of 2 ways*:

For mileage reactivations, you can:

Reactivate miles within 24 months of their expiration Only make 1 transaction to reactivate your miles. Any expired miles from this same expiration time frame that aren’t reactivated will be forfeited Reactivate a maximum of 500,000 miles

*Rates are charged based on the total number of miles reactivated from 1 account at 1 time, regardless of when the miles expired

Missing miles?

If you completed travel and your miles never posted to your AAdvantage® account, you can request missing miles online within 12 months of the flight date.

For missing non-airline partner miles, contact the partner directly.

Please allow up to 10 days for travel on American Airlines and up to 30 days for travel on partner airlines.

Terms and conditions

The price is in U.S. dollars. Your credit card company may add a currency conversion fee. Transactions are non-refundable and non-reversible. Allow up to 24 hours for processing. Expired miles in archived accounts may not be eligible. Reactivated miles are credited to your account as a mileage bonus and don’t count toward AAdvantage® status qualification or Million Miler™ status. Reactivated miles will not expire as long as your account has mileage earning or redeeming activity once every 24 months. Reactivated miles are subject to the standard AAdvantage® program terms and conditions.
