Avis terms and conditions

Avis

  • At time of pick up, driver must present a valid, U.S.-issued driver's license and credit card (or debit card at participating locations) in the driver's name. If the driver's license is not U.S.-issued you must present your drivers license and either a passport or a Canadian enhanced license in the driver's name.
  • All drivers must have a safe driving record. In the U.S., you may be asked to sign a driving record addendum or be subject to a computerized Department of Motor Vehicles check. Based upon such search, Budget reserves the right to deny a rental opportunity.
  • If applicable, you must provide association, corporate, or government credentials.
  • At participating locations, Avis recently lowered the rental minimum age to 21 years old in all states except for Washington DC and select locations in Kentucky.

Rather than requiring customers to be 25 to rent, Avis now rents to customers between the ages of 21-24 with a valid credit card in the renter's name and driver's license. At time of rental, we will automatically apply an additional $25-per-day underage surcharge in the US and $35 per day in Canada for these drivers.

New York State will continue to have a minimum age of 18 with a $44 surcharge per day for renters age 18-20 and a $25-per-day underage surcharge for renters age 21-24.Rentals of Luxury, Mini-Vans, 12-Passenger Vans, Specialty, Full-Size SUVs, and Premium SUVs will not be permitted to renters under 25.

  • If a debit card is presented as credit identification, the renter must be 25.
  • For International rentals, maximum and minimum age policies may apply and vary by country.
  • Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental.
  • Most locations also accept bank debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo as credit identification at the time of rental. If you're using a debit card at a location that accepts them, most U.S. locations will perform a credit check for debit card renters to determine credit worthiness at the time of rental. The renter must meet Avis' minimum criteria in order to rent. If Avis is unable to complete the credit check or if the location does not perform credit checks, the customer must be prepared to present additional identification. Airport locations will accept your round trip ticket, itinerary or e-ticket to or from the renting airport with a return date. If you do not have return flight information or if you are renting at an off-airport location, you may be asked to show a second form of identification (utility bill, bank statement, U.S. passport, military identification or vehicle insurance card) that includes an address matching your U.S. driver's license address. Off-airport locations in the metro areas of Kansas City, MO; Topeka, KS, Omaha, NE and Lincoln, NE will require your round trip ticket, itinerary or e-ticket to or from a nearby airport with a return date to accept a debit card.
  • Please note that some locations do not accept Debit cards. Currently, debit cards are not acceptable as credit identification at the time of rental at locations in the Metropolitan NY Tri-State area, Hartford, CT, Philadelphia area or New Orleans area locations as well as other locations across the country. However, airport locations in New York, NY; Islip, NY; White Plains, NY; Newark, NJ; Philadelphia, PA; and Hartford, CT will accept debit cards from renters who arrive by air. These renters must present their round trip ticket, itinerary or e-ticket. Also, the debit card hold will be the estimated rental charges plus $350.00 at these airports. Debit cards are not accepted at any location in Canada.
  • Avis reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to seek a Debit Card authorization hold in excess of the estimated rental charges. When using a debit card at Avis there will be a hold of $200 plus the estimated rental charges placed on your account. These funds will no longer be available to you. Upon returning the vehicle, Avis will process a reversal of any unused portion of the hold subject to your Bank's procedures. This reversal may take up to 2 weeks to be posted to your account by your bank. If the vehicle is not returned on or before your due date, Avis will obtain additional authorizations from your account to cover the expected rental charges.
    Avis is not responsible for any returned checks or over-drafts based on this policy.
  • Positive identification in addition to your driver's license may be required. In the United States, Debit, Cash or Check cards can be used on return for payment of rental charges. For acceptable credit identification and payment methods in countries outside of the United States, please consult the Renter's Guide and search for the specific location. Note: Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are not acceptable methods of credit identification to pick up a car at any location. One of the above mentioned cards must be presented. Prepaid Debit/Gift cards are accepted at time of return only.
  • Your Estimated Total rental rate is calculated based on the information provided at time of reservation.
  • Vehicles are rented on a daily (24 hour) basis. There is a 29-minute grace period for returns. After 30 minutes late, hourly charges may apply. After 90 minutes late, a full-day late charge may apply.
  • There will be a hold of $200 plus the estimated rental charges. The exact amount of Credit Card authorization will vary by the rate, car group, length of rental, and miscellaneous charges. Callers may check with the rental counter for an estimate of the authorization amount.
  • Optional services, special equipment and one way fees are subject to tax in certain locations. This tax is not reflected in the Estimated Total.
  • Additional drivers may be subject to a fee.
  • Tax and tax related surcharge rates are subject to change without notice.
  • At many airport locations, concession recovery and facility fees may be charged.
  • At many locations a vehicle licensing cost recovery fee and a energy recovery fee may be charged
  • Frequent Flyer surcharges may be applied at time of rental.
  • Extensions or late returns result in additional charges.
  • The U.S. Government imposes a $5/day Admin Rate Supplement (GARS/GA) for U.S. Government rentals.
  • Customers who drive less than 75 miles (125 kms) will automatically be charged a fee of $13.99. If customer chooses to refuel on their own, they must provide a receipt.
  • Approximate total includes base rate, taxes, and surcharges. Items such as coupon discounts, child safety seats and refueling are NOT included in the estimated total. Optional services and one-way fees are subject to tax in certain locations. This tax is not reflected in the Estimated Total.
  • In Australia, GST, Stamp Duty and Concession Recovery fees apply to optional coverages, one-way fees and any other miscellaneous charges. These taxes and charges are not reflected in this quote. For rentals in Australia, please make arrangements for optional coverages at the counter at the time of rental. Please note: Selection of any of the above coverages will result in the coverage and applicable GST, Stamp Duty and Concession Recovery Fee being added to your rental, and not shown in the total of this reservation quote. Concession Recovery Fee is charged at most Major Airport locations only.
  • For rentals in Europe: CDW - this protects you against damage to the Avis vehicle subject to an excess. TP - this protects you against theft of the vehicle or its parts to an excess. If you required additional protection, cover can be purchased locally to reduce/remove the insurance excess. Just ask at the Avis rental desk when you collect your car.

Car Rental General Terms

  • Car rental bookings are not eligible for any program that allows for purchase using frequent traveler miles including the American Airlines AAdvantage Awards® Program.
  • American Airlines gift certificates may not be used for car rental purchases.
  • Car rental bookings do not qualify for any corporate/employee program that might otherwise be offered by American Airlines.
  • No travel agent or other commissions are offered on car rental bookings.
  • Cancellation policies vary per car rental company.
  • Driver age requirements vary per car rental company and per pick-up location.
  • For car rentals, a major credit card will be required and cash purchases may not be accepted. Additional documentation requirements such as a verifiable utility bill showing name and address, a verifiable home phone number or other conditions may be required. Also, some car rental companies may not accept bank check/debit cards even if they carry a major credit card company's logo. To confirm acceptable forms of payment, check with the car rental location directly.
  • Additional charges and fees may be charged by the rental car company for exceeding mileage allotments, driving within unauthorized countries, regions, or states, early returns, late returns, additional drivers, underage drivers, child seats, driving on toll highways, and failure to cancel or pick-up a vehicle.
  • Additional insurance coverage may be mandatory in some countries/regions. If optional insurance is declined, a refundable security deposit may be held against a credit card at the time of rental. The deposit hold will be removed upon the undamaged return of the vehicle. If the deposit amount is not available on the credit card, the renter may be required to purchase coverage from the rental company.
