AAdvantage® terms and conditions
Read AAdvantage® program terms and conditions (Effective March 1, 2025)
Updated January 7, 2026
1. Applicability
A. The AAdvantage® program offered by American Airlines, Inc. and its affiliates and subsidiaries (“American Airlines”) (the “AAdvantage® Program”) is subject to these AAdvantage® Terms and Conditions (“AAdvantage® Terms”) which at all times remain subject to the terms and conditions with respect to American Airlines’ websites, mobile app and select retail outlets (the “Platform Terms”). These AAdvantage® Terms and the Platform Terms are collectively referred to herein as the “Terms”. You agree to be bound by and accept the Terms by enrolling as an AAdvantage® member or participating in the AAdvantage® Program, or by your use of any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits if you are not already an AAdvantage® member. If you do not intend to be legally bound by these Terms, do not enroll or participate in the AAdvantage® Program or use any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits.
B. American Airlines may modify the Terms at any time. No other act, document, usage, or custom will be deemed to amend or modify these Terms. These Terms when so amended will be posted on aa.com. Your continued participation in the AAdvantage® Program or use of any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits after such modified Terms are posted will constitute acceptance of any such amendment.
C. For purposes of these AAdvantage® Terms, “AAdvantage® Status” means all AAdvantage® tiers, the ConciergeKey® program and the Million Miler™ program. “AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits” means any awards, award tickets, rewards, gifts and any other benefits that American Airlines offers in the AAdvantage® Program, including AAdvantage® mileage, American Airlines’ loyalty points (“Loyalty Points”), and AAdvantage® Status. American Airlines partners with certain third parties in connection with the AAdvantage® Program (“AAdvantage® Partners”), and in accordance with these Terms, you may be eligible to earn AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points, or enjoy AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, through AAdvantage® Partners. As an AAdvantage® member, you may receive certain benefits through the oneworld® Alliance in connection with the AAdvantage® Program.
D. You are responsible for reading the Terms, additional member information, AAdvantage® newsletters, and account details available in your online AAdvantage® account in order to understand your rights, responsibilities, and AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits under the AAdvantage® Program.
E. For the avoidance of doubt, these Terms also apply to eligible businesses and individuals who are either Travel Managers or Business Travelers acting in their capacity as employees of the eligible business under the AAdvantage Business℠ program, which is also subject to the AAdvantage Business℠ Terms.
F. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ OUR PRIVACY POLICY.
2. How to earn
A. These Terms apply to the ways in which you can earn AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points. American Airlines offers two types of AAdvantage® miles: (i) Base Miles, and (ii) Bonus Miles. “Base Miles” mean standard AAdvantage® miles that also earn Loyalty Points. American Airlines will determine the number of Loyalty Points accrued for Base Miles in its discretion. “Bonus Miles” means AAdvantage® miles that do not earn Loyalty Points. Bonus Miles are typically granted via special promotions and offers, and through Buy Miles, Gift Miles, and Transfer Miles transactions (each as defined in the Buy, Gift, Transfer Miles terms and conditions). Any Base Miles or Bonus Miles accrued are treated the same for redemption purposes. For the purposes of these Terms, “AAdvantage® mileage” refers to both Base Miles and Bonus Miles.
B. American Airlines reserves the right to modify or enhance how AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points are earned or awarded, which right may be exercised at any time and in American Airlines’ sole discretion. American Airlines is the final authority on AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits and reserves the right to deny or revoke any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (including AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points) at any time (including after such AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits have been posted or redeemed) if American Airlines determines that the AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits were improperly given, including if due to American Airlines’ or an AAdvantage® Partner’s error, and even if through no fault of the AAdvantage® member. If American Airlines revokes any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits in accordance with the foregoing, such revocation may go into effect immediately and may impact your other AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (such as your AAdvantage® tier status if Loyalty Points are revoked), including with regard to travel that has already been booked.
C. Earning mileage and Loyalty Points on flights:
- Eligible members may earn AAdvantage® miles on eligible, purchased tickets based on the following two approaches, as applied and as determined by American Airlines, in each instance in its sole discretion:
i. Earnings based on ticket price: Unless otherwise expressly stated by American Airlines, travel on any eligible, purchased ticket will earn Base Miles (which earn Loyalty Points) based on the ticket price (base fare plus any mandatory carrier-imposed fees). Travel on certain AAdvantage® Partner flights may earn you Bonus Miles (which do not earn Loyalty Points) instead of Base Miles (which earn Loyalty Points). AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points will not be earned on government imposed taxes and fees or on optional airline fees such as, but not limited to, change fees, and ticketing fees.
ii. Earnings based on distance flown: Some AAdvantage® Partner marketed flights or types of fares (such as those sold in conjunction with an American Airlines Vacations℠ package or tickets where the actual fare is not disclosed, like consolidator, bulk fare, or student tickets), may earn Base Miles or Bonus Miles (such as for travel with certain AAdvantage® Partners) based on a percentage of distance flown, as determined by the booking code purchased. In the event the necessary ticket/fare details are not available at the time of posting of your AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points, you may earn AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points based on a percentage of the distance flown as determined by the booking code. For any flights that earn AAdvantage® mileage based on a percentage of distance flown, the distance is determined on the basis of nonstop distances between the airports where your flight originates and terminates, as calculated by American Airlines. On connecting flights with different flight numbers, the distance of each segment will be used. On single-plane, through, or change of gauge flights, the nonstop origin-destination distance will be used and credit for a single qualifying segment will be given
- You may not be able to earn AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points on all flights. Certain fares may be ineligible for AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Point earn. Unless otherwise expressly stated by American Airlines, you may accrue Base Miles (which earn Loyalty Points) only for purchased, eligible tickets on qualifying routes that are used in accordance with all applicable conditions of carriage, tariffs, rules and terms of ticketing (including compliance with rules regarding prohibited booking practices, as further described in the Platform Terms and in the Conditions of Carriage ) and travel. AAdvantage® mileage accrual eligibility on AAdvantage® Partner airline routes is subject to change with or without notice. Flights to/from Cuba are only eligible for AAdvantage® mileage accrual and Loyalty Points on American Airlines operated flights.
- If you use your AAdvantage® number to obtain any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (such as upgrades, baggage fee waivers, priority boarding, or complimentary access to Preferred / Main Cabin Extra seats) your travel will be associated with your AAdvantage® account and you may not be able to associate your travel with, or accrue loyalty rewards for, a non-AAdvantage® frequent flyer or loyalty program. Similarly, if you associate your travel with a non-AAdvantage® frequent flyer or loyalty program, you may not be able to associate that travel with your AAdvantage® account, accrue AAdvantage® miles or Loyalty Points for such travel, or otherwise use your AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits with such travel.
- You must include your AAdvantage® number in your reservation record for any transaction on which you wish to use AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits.
- After your flight departs, you will not be able to change your selection of a frequent traveler program with respect to that flight.
- Unless otherwise stated by American Airlines, AAdvantage® mileage, Loyalty Points and similar loyalty rewards cannot be earned for the same flight, hotel stay, or car rental under both the AAdvantage® Program and any other loyalty program in which American Airlines participates.
- American Airlines assumes no responsibility for how AAdvantage® Partners record mileage-earning transactions. Members must check with the AAdvantage® Partners to confirm how such AAdvantage® Partners record mileage-earning transactions. Please note that some AAdvantage® Partners’ products or services are not available in all states or countries. Additional terms may apply. In the event there is a conflict or inconsistency between an AAdvantage® Partners’ terms and conditions and these Terms, these Terms will take precedence as between you and American Airlines.
- AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points can only be accumulated one time per eligible flight, regardless of the number of seats purchased on each such flight.
- Program services and benefits available through the oneworld® Alliance or other AAdvantage® Partners in connection with the AAdvantage® Program are subject to change with or without notice.
D. Earning and receiving mileage and Loyalty Points for your AAdvantage® transactions
- All accrued AAdvantage® miles from eligible transactions may also earn Loyalty Points, as determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion.
- Certain ancillary products, such as Instant Upgrades that are purchased with cash, may also earn Base Miles (which earn Loyalty Points) as determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion. Unless otherwise stated by American Airlines, transactions purchased or redeemed for a combination of cash and AAdvantage® miles may not accrue AAdvantage® miles or Loyalty Points.
- You may acquire Bonus Miles by purchasing an AAdvantage Pass™ package (as defined in the AAdvantage Pass™ Package Terms and Conditions).
- To ensure you receive credit for your AAdvantage® transactions, please provide your AAdvantage® number when you make your travel reservations or use the services of AAdvantage® Partners. Please retain all flight documents until the AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points appear on your mileage summary. For transactions with non-airline AAdvantage® Partners, please retain your original paid invoice. AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points will be credited only to the account of the AAdvantage® member who flies, rents a car, stays at a hotel, or otherwise earns mileage utilizing other AAdvantage® Partners. No AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points will be awarded for canceled flights or through being accommodated on another airline. To receive AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, including earning AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points, the information on your AAdvantage® account (e.g., name, date of birth, address) must match the information in your reservation.
E. Requesting AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points for past eligible transactions
- You may request AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points for past, eligible transactions up to 12 months from the activity date. However, unless otherwise expressly permitted by American Airlines in its sole discretion, the following are not eligible for AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points: travel on airline AAdvantage® Partners occurring more than 30 days prior to your AAdvantage® enrollment date, travel on flights marketed and operated by American Airlines occurring more than 6 months prior to your AAdvantage® enrollment date, and non-flight transactions occurring more than 6 months prior to your AAdvantage® enrollment date.
- You are responsible for ensuring that your AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points earned are properly credited. If you believe that AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points have been earned but not properly credited, you may be required to submit documentation or other proof satisfactory to American Airlines, which may include copies of ticket coupons, boarding passes, and receipts.
- Any claim for uncredited AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points from eligible transactions must be received by American Airlines within 12 months after the AAdvantage® mileage or Loyalty Points were earned.
F. Prohibitions and permitted AAdvantage® mileage transfers
- AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits and their use with American Airlines products and services are only for your personal benefit and use through your personal AAdvantage® account and they cannot be sold, advertised for sale or bartered or accessed or used by anyone else except as expressly permitted by American Airlines. Violation of these terms and conditions can lead to loss of AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits and termination of your AAdvantage® account.
- Except as otherwise explained below, AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits are not transferable and may not be combined among AAdvantage® members, their estates, successors, or assigns. Accrued AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits do not constitute property of the member, do not have any residual property rights value, and are not transferable (i) upon termination, (ii) upon cancelation, (iii) as part of a domestic relations matter, or (iv) otherwise by operation of law. However, American Airlines, in its sole discretion, may, on a one-time basis, credit accrued AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits to persons specifically identified in a court order or final settlement upon receipt of documentation satisfactory to American Airlines and upon payment of any applicable fees, or upon death of an AAdvantage® member as described in Section 2.G (Death of an AAdvantage® member).
- Any decision made by American Airlines in response to a transfer request is final and not subject to further review. The transfer request and required documents must be provided within one year after the date of the applicable event giving rise to the request for transfer.
- Unless otherwise expressly stated by American Airlines, you will not be able to transfer mileage or Loyalty Points you accumulate in the AAdvantage® Program to any other loyalty program, nor can you transfer mileage you accumulate in another loyalty program to the AAdvantage® Program.
- AAdvantage® mileage is transferable between AAdvantage® accounts when offered by American Airlines as a Transfer Miles transaction (as defined in the Buy, Gift, Transfer Miles terms and conditions) or as permitted by the AAdvantage Business℠ program.
- If you transfer, to the extent permitted by American Airlines, any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits to another person who is not already an AAdvantage® member, you will notify that person of these Terms.
G. Death of an AAdvantage® member
- Accrued AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits do not constitute property of an AAdvantage® member or their estate, do not have any residual property rights value, and except as expressly permitted by American Airlines in its sole discretion, are not transferable upon death.
- Unless otherwise permitted by American Airlines, upon the death of an AAdvantage® member, such AAdvantage® member’s account will be terminated and their AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points forfeited. However, under certain limited situations and upon receipt of documentation satisfactory to American Airlines and payment of any applicable fees, American Airlines may elect to, in its sole discretion and on a one-time basis only, credit eligible accrued AAdvantage® miles of the deceased AAdvantage® member to persons specifically identified in documentation satisfactory to American Airlines, which may include (i) a declaration in support of request for transfer, (ii) a copy of the member’s death certificate, and (iii) a copy of an official document establishing the legal authority of the individual in applicable circumstances. Notwithstanding the foregoing, American Airlines may require a minimum period of 6 months or longer to learn of any other claims to the account and to conduct its internal review and process all submitted documentation (“Review Period”). This Review Period will commence as of the submission date of all requested documentation to American Airlines and may be extended in American Airlines’ sole discretion.
- In the event of any disputes or conflicting claims relating to the accrued AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits of the deceased AAdvantage® member, American Airlines may in its sole discretion require an additional Review Period to settle any and all disputes or claims prior to transferring such accrued AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits to the identified persons.
3. AAdvantage® Mile Redemptions
A. There are many ways you can redeem your AAdvantage® miles, including for travel-related awards such as flight awards and upgrades.
B. From time to time, American Airlines may offer new ways for you to redeem your AAdvantage® miles. All AAdvantage® mileage redemption opportunities are determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion and can be changed by American Airlines for any reason and at any time. AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits may not be available on all flights, and may vary depending on the flight, as determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion.
C. In certain instances, you may be able to use your AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits across certain AAdvantage® Partners, including oneworld® Alliance partner airlines and operators of certain Third-Party Sites.
D. You may be required to log in to your AAdvantage® account to use certain AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits.
E. Flight Awards
- You may not be able to use AAdvantage® miles for travel to all destinations or on all flights. Any flight award may be withdrawn or subject to increased mileage requirements or new restrictions at any time prior to ticketing.
- Flight awards entitle you to one-way travel unless otherwise noted. Certain special flight awards require round-trip travel, and immigration laws in some locations require proof of onward or return travel.
- For each one-way flight award redeemed for travel within the United States or Canada, a maximum of three segments are permitted. For all other destinations (including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands), a maximum of four segments are permitted.
- AAdvantage® flight awards may not be used in conjunction with any other promotion, coupon, discount, or special offer; and are void where prohibited by law. Unless otherwise permitted by American Airlines. members may not combine AAdvantage® flight awards with systemwide upgrades. Flights to/from Cuba are only eligible for mileage redemption on American Airlines flights.
- Your flight awards are only valid for designated flight award destinations served at the time you use the ticket. In the event that American Airlines or an AAdvantage® participating carrier ceases to serve a destination for which a flight award has been redeemed, American Airlines will redeposit the AAdvantage® miles redeemed for that flight award into your account.
- Tickets issued as AAdvantage® flight awards are only applicable on flights that are marketed and operated by American Airlines or certain AAdvantage® Partners.
- Flight awards on American Airlines and American Eagle® flights may be used for any available seat on a flight, including the last seat, however, the number of miles required for a flight award may be higher depending on the availability (e.g., a flight award for a last seat may require more AAdvantage® miles to redeem than a typical flight award).
- Flight awards on airline AAdvantage® Partners may be subject to special limitations on seating availability and the number of miles required for a flight award may vary depending on the AAdvantage® Partner’s availability. Reservations for flight awards will be accepted, and you will have a confirmed seat, as long as award seats are still available for the award you are using when you make your reservation.
- Once a flight award is ticketed, you will have one year from the date of ticketing to complete all flight award travel unless otherwise noted.
- AAdvantage® flight award tickets may be issued in any name designated by the AAdvantage® member at the time the flight award reservation is ticketed (i.e., the recipient cannot be identified at a later point in time), subject to the rules prohibiting purchase, sale, or barter of AAdvantage® mileage or awards (including, for example, the prohibition on assigning AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits for use in a contest), as well as the rules pertaining to any special AAdvantage® offers..
- If you voluntarily terminate your AAdvantage® account, American Airlines will honor flight award tickets already issued at the time of account termination, but such flight award tickets cannot be modified or transferred.
- Flight award tickets have no cash value and are non-transferable and non-assignable.
- Flight awards for international travel are subject to appropriate governmental approvals.
- AAdvantage® flight awards are subject to, and the passenger or the AAdvantage® member is responsible for, any applicable immigration fees, surcharges (whether enacted by a governmental authority or otherwise), departure fees, departure taxes, security fees, federal inspection fees, passenger facility charges or other taxes, fees, and surcharges assessed by appropriate authorities or airline AAdvantage® Partners. Any additional fees that may apply for each award ticket are payable by credit card.
- Changes to or cancellation of AAdvantage® award reservations
i. Prior to ticketing, you may change or cancel your AAdvantage® flight award reservations with no charge incurred, unless otherwise stated by American Airlines. However, if you change or cancel your AAdvantage® flight award reservation after the original ticketing, additional miles or fees may apply for each ticket and are due at the time your ticket is reissued. Required miles and fees are subject to change with or without notice.
ii. AAdvantage® mileage will be reinstated for wholly unused AAdvantage® awards if the reservation is canceled before departure and if the ticket has not expired.
iii. Expired tickets will not be reinstated. Partially used awards will not be reinstated.
iv. American Airlines is not responsible for the cancellation of flight award reservations or changes to any award travel plans made by members.
F. Upgrades
- American Airlines offers different types of flight upgrades that you may be eligible to obtain, as determined by American Airlines from time to time.
- Complimentary Upgrades
i. Complimentary upgrades, including the use of any complimentary upgrade benefit on AAdvantage® award tickets, may be available for ConciergeKey®, AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum Pro®, AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Gold® members as determined by American Airlines. Certain AAdvantage® Status members may receive a complimentary upgrade for one companion traveling on the same flight. However, if there are more than two passengers in your reservation, please contact American Airlines to request a complimentary upgrade for you and a companion (as this will not happen automatically for such multi-passenger reservations). Further important information about complimentary upgrades and companions can be found on aa.com..
ii. If you are not an AAdvantage® Status member, you may only be eligible for a complimentary upgrade when traveling as the companion to an AAdvantage® Status member.
iii. Upgrades are valid on American Airlines marketed and operated flights offering a higher class of service or cabin within and between the 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, as well as between the United States and Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua or Panama).
iv. Complimentary upgrades are valid to the next class of service or cabin on eligible fares. Please refer to the information on the Answers and Support page of our website or contact American Airlines for more information.
v. American Airlines determines the number of seats eligible for complimentary upgrades on each flight and this number is subject to seating limitations and capacity controls. American Airlines reserves the right to vary the eligibility and timelines for upgrade issuance and notification depending on your AAdvantage® Status. For any flight on which you are a confirmed passenger, upgrade priority will be determined by American Airlines in its discretion. Complimentary upgrade eligible seats for a particular flight may no longer be available due to factors such as the number of seats purchased or otherwise awarded in the designated cabin.
vi. If your reservation is upgraded, American Airlines may notify you of the confirmed upgrade. If a confirmed upgrade is not available, you will automatically be added to the Airport Upgrade Standby List at check-in.
vii. In the event of a cancellation or irregular operation or other situation in which it is necessary to reseat or rebook the passenger, American Airlines will attempt to honor your upgrade on another flight operated by American Airlines or one of its regional carriers. If you are accommodated on another carrier, you will be given travel options that will include options to travel in the class of service purchased on your American Airlines ticket. If you received an upgrade on a flight and subsequently change your upgraded flight to a different flight, American Airlines will attempt to request the same upgrade for you on your new flight but cannot guarantee that the upgrade will be granted.
viii. Complimentary upgrades cannot be combined with any other offer.
ix. Sale or purchase of complimentary upgrades is prohibited and constitutes fraud. Complimentary upgrades are void if sold or purchased.
- Instant Upgrades
i. Certain additional rules and requirements apply to Instant Upgrades, which are subject to additional terms and conditions. In the event of a conflict, those additional rules and requirements will override these Terms with respect to such Instant Upgrade.
- Systemwide Upgrades
i. Certain additional rules and requirements apply to systemwide upgrades, which are subject to their own terms and conditions . In the event of a conflict, those additional rules and requirements will override these Terms with respect to such systemwide upgrade.
Systemwide upgrades terms and conditions
ii. Systemwide upgrades are transferable and assignable, but may not be sold or bartered. Systemwide upgrades are void if sold, purchased or expired.
- Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards
i. American Airlines formerly offered flight upgrades in exchange for AAdvantage® miles and, if applicable, a cash co-payment, at a static rate (“Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards”). American Airlines no longer offers Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards, and has instead replaced Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards with the ability to redeem AAdvantage® miles for Instant Upgrades.
ii. American Airlines is no longer accepting new requests for Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards. However, American Airlines will honor Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards that were requested on or prior to August 11, 2025.
iii. Static-Mileage Upgrade Awards will be governed by the terms and conditions applicable to the Static-Mileage Upgrade Award at the time such Static-Mileage Upgrade Award was requested (even if the requested Static-Mileage Upgrade Award has not yet been granted).
iv. American Airlines will only redeem your AAdvantage® miles in exchange for a Static-Mileage Upgrade Award if and when your Static-Mileage Upgrade Award is granted.
v. Any changes to a requested or granted Static-Mileage Upgrade Award after August 11, 2025 will result in your Static-Mileage Upgrade Award being cancelled, in which case the AAdvantage® miles will be reinstated to your AAdvantage® account, but the non-refundable cash co-payment will not be refunded.
- If you upgrade your travel using complimentary upgrades, Instant Upgrades, or systemwide upgrades, AAdvantage® mileage and Loyalty Points will accrue based on the usual rules prior to the upgrade, but not on the upgraded class of service flown.
- If you voluntarily terminate your AAdvantage® account, American Airlines will honor upgrades already issued at the time of account termination, but such upgrades cannot be modified or transferred.
- As an AAdvantage® member, you may receive certain other upgrades through the oneworld® Alliance, and such upgrades may be subject to additional terms and conditions. You may also be able to use your AAdvantage® miles for flight upgrades on travel with certain airline AAdvantage® Partners.
- In the event of a cancellation or irregular operation or other situation in which it is necessary to reseat or rebook the passenger, American Airlines will attempt to honor your upgrade on another flight operated by American Airlines or one of its regional carriers. If you are accommodated on another carrier, you will be given travel options that will include options to travel in the class of service on your American Airlines ticket, if possible. If you received an upgrade on a flight and subsequently change your upgraded flight to a different flight, American Airlines will attempt to request the same upgrade for you on your new flight but cannot guarantee that any upgrade will be made.
- For more information about upgrades, including for information about upgrades on airline AAdvantage® Partners, visit aa.com.
G. Third-Party Platforms
- You may be eligible to earn Bonus Miles or redeem AAdvantage® miles on third-party websites operated by AAdvantage® Partners (“Third-Party Sites”). All content displayed on Third-Party Sites is provided by the AAdvantage® Partner, and not by American Airlines. American Airlines disclaims all responsibility for content on Third-Party Sites.
- Third-Party Sites may be branded with the trademarks of American Airlines. American Airlines is not responsible for any third-party marks displayed on the Third-Party Sites.
- Before engaging with a website branded with American Airlines marks, please review the applicable terms and conditions to understand whether the website is offered by American Airlines (e.g., American Airlines Vacations℠; AAdvantage eShopping®; Buy Miles, Gift Miles, and Transfer Miles) or if the website is a Third-Party Site (e.g., AAdvantage Cars℠; AAdvantage Hotels℠, AAdvantage Cruises℠, and AAdvantage Exchange™).
- Your activities on Third-Party Sites are subject to the terms and conditions and privacy policies of the applicable Third-Party Site between you and the AAdvantage® Partner, and American Airlines is not subject to such third-party terms.
- American Airlines’ only involvement with the Third-Party Site relates to the redemption and earning of AAdvantage® miles on the applicable Third-Party Site and your AAdvantage® account, which are governed by these Terms. American Airlines assumes no responsibility for any Third-Party Site, including for any goods or other services offered or made available on the Third-Party Site. In the event there is a conflict or inconsistency between the terms and conditions on a Third-Party Site and these Terms, these Terms will control as between you and American Airlines.
H. Onboard Purchases
- American Airlines may provide redemption opportunities for certain onboard products (e.g., seat selections, food and beverages) on certain flights. If additional terms specific to the redemption or use of onboard products are presented at the time of redemption, such additional terms will apply to your redemption and use, including (if applicable) with respect to refund policies for cancellations or changes initiated by American Airlines.
- Unless otherwise permitted by American Airlines, you may not cancel or change your redemption for an onboard product. However, certain redemptions for onboard products may be transferable in connection with changes you make to your flight reservation, subject to availability (e.g., if you make a redemption for preferred seating, you may be eligible to re-book in preferred seating on your new flight, subject to availability).
I. All travel in connection with the AAdvantage® Program, including in connection with flight awards, complimentary upgrades, Instant Upgrades and systemwide upgrades, will be subject to the tariffs, contract of carriage, ticket terms, and re-accommodation policies of the carrier on which travel is scheduled (including, for flights operated by American Airlines, the American Airlines Conditions of Carriage ) and may also be subject to the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention.
4. AAdvantage® Status, reward qualification and Loyalty Points
You qualify for AAdvantage® tiers based on the Loyalty Points you earn during the 12-month period starting on March 1 each year, and your status membership is valid from the time you reach status through March 31 of the following full year, unless otherwise determined by American Airlines. Please see the link to the “AAdvantage® Status” webpage for more details. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the ConciergeKey® membership year (when your status is valid) takes effect the date you are offered and accept ConciergeKey® membership, or May 1 (whichever comes first) and will be valid through April 30 of the following year.
B. Except as otherwise specified, certain AAdvantage® miles-related transactions, including the following, only earn Bonus Miles and therefore are not eligible to earn Loyalty Points: (i) AAdvantage® miles earned from Offers (as defined in Section 5.A.1 below), (ii) AAdvantage® miles from Buy Miles, Gift Miles, and Transfer Miles transactions, and (iii) conversion of another program currency to AAdvantage® miles.
C. American Airlines may use Loyalty Points for any purpose it determines in its sole discretion. For example, American Airlines may use Loyalty Points to track qualification towards certain AAdvantage® Status.
D. Whether a mile is considered a Base Mile or Bonus Miles may be changed by American Airlines in its sole discretion at any time with or without notice.
E. If you accrue Loyalty Points but the accrual becomes invalid (e.g., a qualifying purchase is cancelled or returned) or the accrual was obtained fraudulently or in an unauthorized manner, the applicable Loyalty Points will be removed and any AAdvantage® Status qualification and benefits triggered by such accrual may be reversed.
F. AAdvantage Pass™ package
- As part of the AAdvantage® program, American Airlines offers AAdvantage Pass™ packages for sale. AAdvantage Pass™ packages consist of AAdvantage® miles, Loyalty Points and AAdvantage® Status, as made available by American Airlines from time to time at its discretion.
- AAdvantage Pass™ packages are subject to these Terms, as well as the supplemental AAdvantage Pass™ Package Terms and Conditions, which are hereby incorporated into these Terms.
5. AAdvantage® offers / AAdvantage® Partner offers
A. General terms and conditions for AAdvantage® offers and AAdvantage® Partner offers
- By engaging in any offer to receive bonus American Airlines AAdvantage® miles, Loyalty Points or any other AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (“Offer”), you agree to be legally bound by the specific terms and conditions of the Offer.

- For any Offer tied to an AAdvantage® member’s Loyalty Point activity, unless otherwise permitted by American Airlines, only eligible Loyalty Points accrued after registration will be considered for such Offer.
- Unless otherwise specified, all AAdvantage® miles earned from flying with eligible airline AAdvantage® Partners as determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion (which may include flights marketed by American Airlines, oneworld® airlines and other airline AAdvantage® Partners) qualify towards Offer requirements.
B. Legal disclaimers with respect to AAdvantage® offers and AAdvantage® Partner offers

The Released Parties are not responsible or liable for any incorrect or inaccurate participant information, and assume no responsibility for (i) any error, omission, interruption, defect, or delay in operation or transmission at any website, (ii) failure of any participant information to be reported to American Airlines due to technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, (iii) communications line, hardware, or software failures, (iv) damage to any computer (software or hardware) resulting from participation in the Offer, (v) theft or destruction of, tampering with, unauthorized access to, or alteration of participant information, or (vi) participant information or mail which are late, lost, stolen, damaged, illegible, unintelligible, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, or lacking postage (or any combination thereof). The use of third-party software or website or automated systems to participate is prohibited, and American Airlines reserves the right to disqualify participants who engage in the Offer in such fashion. 6. General terms
A. AAdvantage® Program reservation of rights
- American Airlines may, in its discretion, change the AAdvantage® Program, including its rules, regulations, awards, and special offers at any time with or without notice. This means that the accumulation of AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits does not entitle you to any vested rights with respect to such AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits.
- American Airlines offers the AAdvantage® Program at its discretion and has the right to terminate the AAdvantage® Program, in whole or in part, or to change or amend the Terms, in whole or in part, at any time, even if the changes affect the value of AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (including, for clarity, AAdvantage® Status) already accumulated.
- American Airlines reserves the right to modify its products and services, including those that are not part of the AAdvantage® Program, and such modifications may affect the AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits that you are able to earn, redeem or otherwise use. For example, American Airlines may modify its fare rules, fare classes, upgrade rules and ancillaries from time to time.
- American Airlines reserves the right to end the AAdvantage® Program with six months’ notice.
- American Airlines may, among other things, (i) withdraw, limit, modify, or cancel any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits (including by revoking AAdvantage® miles or Loyalty Points); (ii) change AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, participant affiliations, conditions of participation, rules for earning, redeeming, retaining, forfeiting or transferring AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, or rules for the use of AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits; (iii) rename or redefine program elements or benefits; or (iv) modify or end any AAdvantage® Status and associated benefits.
- American Airlines may make any one or more of these changes at any time, even though such changes may affect your ability to use the AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits that you have already accumulated.
- AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits and special offers are subject to government regulations.
- These reservations of rights apply to all aspects of the AAdvantage® Program, including all AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits.
B. Suspension / termination of AAdvantage® accounts
- American Airlines reserves the right to terminate your AAdvantage® account for inactivity. Your account may be deemed inactive and terminated with or without notice if: (i) you have not had any AAdvantage® mileage earning or redeeming activity for at least 36 consecutive months, which may include not meeting the 24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement (as defined in Section 6.H.1 (Reactivation of miles)); (ii) your AAdvantage® account has a current balance of zero miles; (iii) you do not have an AAdvantage® co-branded credit card open and in good standing associated with your account; and (iv) you do not have any lifetime benefits (such as Million Miler™ or Lifetime AirPass) or an active AAdvantage® Status. With respect to AAdvantage® accounts created within the prior 24 months, American Airlines reserves the right to terminate such accounts that do not have any mileage earning or redeeming activity for 12 months.
- American Airlines may at any time suspend or terminate any AAdvantage® account for any reason in its sole discretion, such as suspending or terminating any AAdvantage® account associated with a customer who violates American Airlines policies and procedures as determined by American Airlines in its sole discretion, including when such customer has been added to the American Airlines “no fly list” for any reason.
- American Airlines reserves the right to audit any and all accounts at any time, whether with or without notice to the member, to ensure compliance with these Terms, the Conditions of Carriage and applicable tariffs (including validating that the name and date of birth on the AAdvantage® account matches the name and date of birth in a flight reservation). In the event that an audit reveals discrepancies or violations, AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits may be delayed until the discrepancies or violations are resolved in a manner satisfactory to American Airlines. Pending such resolution, members may be prohibited from accessing or using their account as determined in American Airlines’ sole discretion.
- TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMISSIBLE BY APPLICABLE LAW, AND EXCEPT WITH REGARD TO AMERICAN AIRLINES’ GROSS NEGLIGENCE, FRAUD OR WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, IN NO EVENT WILL AMERICAN AIRLINES OR ANY AADVANTAGE® PARTNER BE LIABLE TO YOU, OR ANYONE CLAIMING THROUGH A MEMBER, FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, OR LOST REVENUE OR PROFITS, ARISING OUT OF THE ACTS OR OMISSIONS OF AMERICAN AIRLINES OR ANY AADVANTAGE® PARTNER IN CONNECTION WITH THE AADVANTAGE® PROGRAM.
- Termination of your AAdvantage® account by American Airlines for any reason will result in the immediate forfeiture of all accrued and unused AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, such as upgrades, baggage fee waivers and priority boarding privileges. Certain terminations may also result in cancellation of existing redemptions.
- If your account is terminated due to inappropriate conduct or while under investigation, you may not open a new AAdvantage® account or participate in the AAdvantage® Program in any capacity without obtaining the express written permission of American Airlines.
- You may voluntarily terminate your AAdvantage® account by providing written notice to AAdvantage® Customer Service.
- All requests to terminate your account must include the following information to confirm your identity: your full name, your AAdvantage® number, email address on your AAdvantage® account, your country of residence, and your date of birth.
- AAdvantage® account termination is permanent, but if you terminate your AAdvantage® account voluntarily while in good standing, you may open a new AAdvantage® account at any time; however, any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits which may have been available under your previous AAdvantage® account prior to termination will not be reactivated or transferred to your new AAdvantage® account.
C. AAdvantage® Program eligibility requirements
- Only individuals are eligible for AAdvantage® Program membership, except in connection with the AAdvantage Business℠ program or as expressly permitted by American Airlines.
- Each eligible individual is limited to one AAdvantage® Program membership.
D. Account access, American Airlines data, use of data and privacy
- American Airlines collects personal data about participants online, in accordance with its Privacy Policy.
- You understand and agree that the AAdvantage® Program and any and all information associated with the AAdvantage® Program such as your AAdvantage® member information, AAdvantage® account number and password are solely owned by American Airlines as “American Data” and are confidential information of American Airlines.
- A person in your household or a person that you directly supervise as part of their career or employment may also use your AAdvantage® account number and password with your approval but solely to provide administrative support to you in connection with your AAdvantage® account and only if you agree to be responsible for all other aspects of their usage, including the charges they incur.
- As an AAdvantage® member you may not give or approve access to your AAdvantage® account by any third party on-line service, including, but not limited to any mileage management service, mileage tracking service, or mileage aggregation service.
- As an AAdvantage® member you must access your account information directly through the American Platforms (as defined in the Platform Terms) and not through a third-party website, such as any mileage management service, mileage tracking service, or mileage aggregation service.
- American Airlines assumes no responsibility for and is not liable for any unauthorized access by third parties to a member’s account or account information, including any unauthorized award transaction made from the account, except as provided under applicable laws. American Airlines assumes no obligation or duty to re-credit any unauthorized mileage withdrawal made by third parties; however, American Airlines reserves the right to review, in its sole discretion, requests for re-crediting unauthorized mileage withdrawals provided such request is made to American Airlines within three months of the unauthorized withdrawal.
- To the maximum extent permissible by applicable law, and except with regard to American Airlines’ gross negligence, fraud or willful misconduct, American Airlines will have no liability in connection with any unauthorized use or access of your AAdvantage® account, AAdvantage® account number or password.
- Except for the sharing of your AAdvantage® account number with AAdvantage® Partners as permitted by the AAdvantage® Program, you may not share any American Data with any third party without American Airlines’ express consent.
E. Taxes
- Any valuation of the AAdvantage® miles or any other AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits stated in any Offer is based on available information provided to American Airlines. The value of the AAdvantage® miles may be taxable as income.
- Income tax liability related to any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, if applicable, is the responsibility of the member.
- All federal, state, and local taxes and any other costs and expenses associated with the acceptance or use of AAdvantage® miles or any other AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits not specifically provided for in the Terms are solely your responsibility. You are responsible for reporting and paying any and all applicable taxes. You must contact your own tax advisor for any questions concerning taxes.
F. Communications from American Airlines / your AAdvantage® account status / mileage summaries
- Your mileage summaries and redemption receipts will be sent to the email address that you provide. You may also receive special promotional materials at the mailing address or e-mail address you provide.
- You may view your account status and mileage summary on www.aa.com, on our mobile app or by subscribing to receive the AAdvantage® Account Summary by logging in to your AAdvantage® account. AAdvantage® Account Summary subscribers receive their summary and information every month, as long as there is AAdvantage® account activity in the prior three years. Your summary includes mileage earned, Loyalty Points, along with AAdvantage® Program information and special promotions.
G. Name and address change
- You are responsible for letting American Airlines know of any name, email, or address change on your account. Please ensure that the name in your AAdvantage® account matches exactly the name on your government-issued photo ID used when you travel.
- Name change requests cannot be processed over the phone. You must instead submit a copy of supporting legal documentation (e.g., court order, marriage certificate, divorce certificate) by mail or follow the instructions on this website or the mobile app to submit your identity verification. Identity verification will be required for any name change requests. Your signature and AAdvantage® membership number must be included in all written correspondence.
H. Reactivation of miles
- Unless otherwise stated, if your account has no Qualifying Activity in any 24-month period, all miles in the account will expire (“24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement”). “Qualifying Activity” is defined as (i) redeeming any AAdvantage® award or accruing AAdvantage® mileage on any eligible purchases with American Airlines or airline AAdvantage® Partners, (ii) completing any Buy Miles, Gift Miles, or Transfer Miles transaction (each as defined in the Buy, Gift, and Transfer Miles terms and conditions ), or (iii) accruing AAdvantage® mileage with participating hotels, car rental companies, credit cards, and other service providers offering AAdvantage® mileage. Qualifying Activity extends the expiration date of all unexpired AAdvantage® mileage in your account for 24 months from the date of the Qualifying Activity. The 24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement will not apply to AAdvantage® members under age 21. Once an AAdvantage® member turns 21 years of age, their account must have mileage earning or redeeming activity within 24 months of their 21st birthday in order to retain their miles. If your account does not include a birth date in the member profile, the account will be subject to the 24-Month Qualifying Activity Requirement.
- AAdvantage® members may reactivate AAdvantage® miles by paying a reactivation fee based on the number of miles to be reactivated (currently ranging from $60 to $2,000 and which may be adjusted from time to time). AAdvantage® mileage will only be eligible for reactivation if requested in the 24-month period following expiration of your miles. AAdvantage® members may reactivate a maximum of 500,000 miles within the reactivation period—any miles not reactivated at that time will be forfeited. AAdvantage® members can reactivate their miles by visiting AA.com/reactivate or by contacting AAdvantage® Customer Service. Reactivation transactions are non-refundable and irreversible, and any miles reactivated will not accrue Loyalty Points or count toward AAdvantage® tier qualification or AAdvantage Million Miler™ status. Reactivated miles (including expiration) will still be subject to these AAdvantage® Terms.
I. Prohibitions
- Except for transfers as expressly permitted via your AAdvantage® account (such as in connection with a Buy Miles, Gift Miles, or Transfer Miles transaction, each as defined under the Buy, Gift, and Transfer Miles terms and conditions , or in connection with the AAdvantage Business℠ program), you may not, at any time, purchase, transfer, sell, advertise for sale, or barter (including by means of transferring, gifting, or promising) any AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits associated with the offering of any American Airlines products or services for any purpose whatsoever, such as in exchange for payment or in support of a business, product or charity or participation in an auction, sweepstakes, raffle or contest. Any such AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits are void if transferred for cash or other consideration. Violators (including any passenger who uses a purchased or bartered award ticket) may be liable for damages and litigation costs, including American Airlines’ attorneys’ fees incurred in enforcing this rule.
- Fraud, misrepresentation, abuse, or violation of these Terms is subject to administrative or legal action by appropriate governmental authorities and American Airlines. Such action may include the forfeiture of any and all AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits in a member’s account including existing redemptions, as well as termination of the account and the member’s future participation in the AAdvantage® Program. In addition, American Airlines reserves the right to take appropriate legal action to recover damages, including its attorneys’ fees incurred in prosecuting any lawsuit.
J. Consequences / remedies
- Use of award tickets that have been acquired by purchase or for any other consideration may result in the tickets being canceled, confiscated, or the passenger being denied boarding. If a trip has been started, any continued travel will be at the passenger’s expense on a full-fare basis. The passenger or member who attempts to use such a ticket may also be liable to American Airlines for the cost of a full fare ticket for any segments flown on a sold or bartered ticket.
- All reservations or award tickets that are made or purchased through fraudulent means are void and will be cancelled by American Airlines.
- If American Airlines or any AAdvantage® Partner improperly denies you AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, your exclusive remedy will be the issuance of the improperly denied AAdvantage® Rewards and Benefits, if available, or such other alternative comparable benefit as determined by American Airlines, in its sole discretion. To the maximum extent permissible by applicable law, American Airlines will have no additional liability whatsoever.
K. Governing law and dispute resolution
- You agree that you will notify American Airlines of any dispute by submitting your concerns to American Airlines, including a description of the nature of the dispute. Following delivery of such submission, you agree to allow American Airlines a period of sixty (60) days to provide a substantive response and to try to resolve the dispute, prior to filing any lawsuit or any other proceeding against American Airlines related to the dispute. YOU AGREE THAT YOUR FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE NOTIFICATION PROCEDURES WILL ENTITLE AMERICAN AIRLINES TO RECOVER FROM YOU REASONABLE ATTORNEYS’ FEES INCURRED IN DEFENDING THE LAWSUIT OR ANY OTHER PROCEEDING.
- YOU AGREE THAT THE RESOLUTION OF ANY DISPUTE, CLAIM, OR CONTROVERSY RELATED TO THE PROGRAM SHALL BE CONDUCTED ON AN INDIVIDUAL, NOT A CLASS-WIDE BASIS, AND THAT NO SUCH PROCEEDING MAY BE CONSOLIDATED WITH ANY OTHER LEGAL PROCEEDINGS INVOLVING AMERICAN AIRLINES (FOR CLARITY, INCLUDING ITS AFFILIATED ENTITIES). YOU FURTHER AGREE THAT YOU, AND ANYONE ASSERTING A CLAIM FOR YOU, WILL NOT BE A CLASS REPRESENTATIVE, CLASS MEMBER, OR OTHERWISE PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS, REPRESENTATIVE, CONSOLIDATED OR PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL PROCEEDING AGAINST AMERICAN AIRLINES.
- If you are (i) an individual who is either a U.S. Citizen or a resident of the U.S. or its territories or (ii) an entity, you agree that these Terms are made and entered into in Tarrant County, Texas. You agree that Texas law governs the interpretation of these Terms or any dispute arising from your participation in the AAdvantage® Program or use of any AAdvantage® Rewards or Benefits, without regard to conflicts of law principles. Except as set forth below, any lawsuit brought by you related to your participation in the AAdvantage® Program or use of any AAdvantage® Rewards or Benefits or these Terms must be brought in the state or federal courts of Tarrant County, Texas.
- If you are an individual, and you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a resident of the U.S. or its territories, you agree that any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising from or related to your participation in the AAdvantage® Program or use of any AAdvantage® Rewards or Benefits or these Terms, or their subject matter or formation, shall be governed by the laws and courts of your usual place of residence, without regard to any conflict of law provisions, and you irrevocably submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of such courts.
L. Order of precedence; rules of interpretation
- These Terms (for clarity, including both these AAdvantage® Terms and the Platform Terms) contain the entire agreement between you and American Airlines with respect to the AAdvantage® Program and supersedes all previous or contemporaneous communications, representations, proposals, commitments, understandings, and agreements, whether written or oral, between you and American Airlines with respect to the AAdvantage® Program. However, if you participate in other American Airlines offerings (e.g. AAdvantage Business℠, Buy, Gift, Transfer Miles) that have their own terms and conditions but also reference these Terms, you are subject to both those terms and conditions and these Terms. In the case of a conflict between these Terms and any agreement specific to any other goods, products, or services that you obtain, purchase, or use through your AAdvantage® account (“Specific Agreement”), the terms of the Specific Agreement shall govern.
- In interpreting these Terms and Conditions, the conjunction “or” will be understood in its inclusive sense (and/or), and use of the words “includes” or “including”, “for example”, or “e.g.” (and their derivatives) will be deemed to be followed with the phrase “without limitation”.
