Tops on our list of activities in Atlanta for history buffs is a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. You can visit the home where Dr. King was born (at 501 Auburn Avenue) on a tour led by a park ranger (it's part of the National Park Service network). The tours, however, are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so waste no time registering in person at Freedom Hall at The King Center (at 449 Auburn Avenue), since each tour is capped at 15 people. You'll also want to visit Ebenezer Baptist Church (at 407 Auburn Avenue), where Dr. King preached. Auburn Avenue is on the Atlanta Segway Tour if you'd rather ride than hoof it.
If you like to shop until you drop, drop in the Buckhead neighborhood for high-end shops. Looking for something more local, with a unique artisan flair? Then head over to historic Virginia Highland (at the intersection of North Highland Avenue and Virginia Avenue). Here you'll find seven distinct areas offering clothing boutiques, sidewalk cafes and art galleries. Spending an afternoon meandering this section of town is one of our favorite activities in Atlanta.
Gourmands can sample their way through the city, because restaurants in Atlanta restaurants offer everything from haute cuisine to down-home, Southern-style home cooking.
